According to Giraldus Cambrensis, Hugh de Lacy was an able and resolute governor but physically unprepossessing, swarthy, short, and ill-proportioned.3 He is thus described by Holingshed:- "His eyes were dark and deep-set, his neck short, his stature small, his body hairy, not fleshy, but sinewy, strong, and compact; a very good soldier, but rather harsh and hasty."4 Hugo II de Lacy was born circa 1148. He was the son of Gilbert de Lacy of Weobley and Alice de Gant.2,1 Hugo II de Lacy succeeded his elder brother Robert circa 1162.1 He married Roesia de Monemue, daughter of Baderon de Monemue and Rohais de Clare; His 1st.5 Annals of the Four Masters 1172: "Tiernan O'Rourke, Lord of Breifny and Conmaicne, a man of great power for a long time, was treacherously slain at Tlachtgha by Hugo de Lacy and Donnell, the son of Annadh O'Rourke, one of his own tribe, who was along with them. He was beheaded by them, and they conveyed his head and body ignominiously to Dublin. The head was placed over the gate of the fortress, as a spectacle of intense pity to the Irish, and the body was gibbeted, with the feet upwards, at the northern side of Dublin. / Ticchernan Ua Ruairc ticcherna Breifne agus Conmaicne agus fer cumhachta móir fri re fhota do mharbhadh (.i. i Tlachtgha) la Hugó De Laci i fiull agus la Domhnall Mac Annadha Uí Ruairc dia chenél fesin boi imaille friu. ( (an unknown value)).6 Hugo II de Lacy was granted the province of Meath (from the Shannon to the sea) for the service of 50 knights, and was left as constable of Dublin and justiciar when Henry returned to England, in April 1172.7,8 He was appointed constable of Dublin in April 1172 at Ireland.7 He was appointed justiciar, the representative of the royal government in Ireland as a whole, in April 1172 at Ireland.7 He treacherously killed Tiernan O'Rourke in the course of a parley, effectivey reducing Irish resistance in Meath after April 1172. He fought for Henry in Normandy, defending Verneuil, in 1173.3 He was appointed to succeed William Fitz Audlin as procurator-general of Ireland in 1177.3 Annals of the Four Masters 1178: "The Constable of the King of England in Dublin and East Meath (namely, Hugo) marched with his forces to Clonmacnoise, and plundered all the town, except the churches and the bishop's houses. God and Kieran wrought a manifest miracle against them, for they were unable to rest or sleep, until they had secretly absconded from Cuirr Cluana on the next day. / Constapla righ Saxan i n-Ath Cliath (.i. One of the men of Teffia, a youth named Gilla-gan-inathar O'Meyey, approached him, and drawing out an axe, which he had kept concealed, he, with one blow of it, severed his head from his body; and both head and trunk fell into the ditch of the castle. But he was very ambitious, and desired to become king. He acted as regent for some time, but was soon deposed. So resentful was he that he wrote to Salah al-Din, aligned himself to him, and asked for his help in becoming king of the Franj. Salah al-Din was delighted at the request, and quickly freed a number of knights of Tripoli who had been imprisoned among the Muslims."2 He was designated regent as regent for the dying King Baldwin IV's infant nephew circa March 1184.4 Regent of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem at Outremer in 1184/85.4 He concluded a four-year truce with Saladin upon the death of Baldwin IV in March 1185.4 He was forced into battle against his ally, the Muslim Saladin, and when the Frankish forces were defeated Saladin's lieutenants saw his attempt to flee and allowed his escape to Tripoli on 4 July 1187 at the Battle of the Horns of Hattin, Outremer.5 He died in September 1187 at Tripoli, Outremer.1
