He was the son of Gillebride mac Gille Adomnan.1 Somerled mac Gillebride, King of the Isles married N. N. What Somerled could not gain by force of arms against the Norwegians, he attempted to aquire by marriage to the daughter of Olaf the Red.3,4 King of the Isles at Scotland between 1140 and 1164.5,2 King of Man between 1158 and 1164.5 Somerled mac Gillebride, King of the Isles was the predecessor of Reginald mac Somerled, Lord of the Isles; King of Man. Somerled mac Gillebride, King of the Isles died in 1164. Wounded and killed at the battle of Renfrew against the forces of the Steward of Scotland. Gilla Brighdi, co n-ár Gall Atha Cliath araen ríu, do marbadh la Firu Alban."6 He was a witness where 1st High Steward of Scotland Walter fitz Alan Commander of the Household Knights who defeated a large force of Norsemen, some 6,000 men led by Somerled, Thane of the Isles, who were bent on conquest. Somerled was wounded early in the fight in 1164 at Renfrew, Scotland.7 Somerled mac Gillebride, King of the Isles was the predecessor of Reginald mac Somerled, Lord of the Isles; Lord of the Isles.2 Somerled mac Gillebride, King of the Isles was traditionally described as "a well-tempered man, in body shapely, of a fair piercing eye, of middle stature, and of quick discernment". He appears, indeed, to have been equally brave and sagacious, tempering courage with prudence, and, excepting in the last act of his life, distinguished for the happy talent, rare at any period, of profiting by circumstances, and making the most of success.1
