Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile was the father of Constance, reine de Sicile; the posthumously born daughter of Roger II of Sicily and Beatrice of Rethel.5 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile was the son of Count Roger I of Sicily and his third wife, Adelaide of Savona.5 He was brought up in a cosmopolitan, multilingual world of Greek and Muslim tutors and secretaries and soon revealed an exotic strain in his nature at Sicily, Italy.5 He was a ruler for whom diplomacy, however tortuous, was a more natural weapon than the sword, and gold, however corrupting, a more effective currency than blood.5 Also called re di Sicilia Ruggiero d' Altavilla Italian. Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile also went by the name of Roger "the Great". He was the father of Guillaume I "el Malo", roi de Sicile; the fourth, but oldest surving son, of Roger II.5 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile was born on 22 December 1095.3,5,6 He was the son of Roger I, comte de Sicile and Adelaide di Savona, comtesse de Sicile.1,2,3,4 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile was the successor of Adelaide di Savona, comtesse de Sicile; Dowager Countess of Sicily.7 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile succeeded his elder brother Simon at the age of nine on 28 September 1105.5 Grand Count of Sicily at Norman Italy between 28 November 1105 and 1128.3,5 He was said to have been made King of Sicily by the Norwegian King Sigurd on Sigurd's way to Jerusalem, and is so recorded in the Heimskringla in 1109.8 He was a witness where King of Norway Sigurdr I jórsalafara of Ringerike arrived in Sicily where he was hosted by Duke Roger, and Sigurd "saluted him with the title of king; and gave the right that there should be always a king over the dominion of Sicily, although before there had only been earls or dukes over that country" in 1109. Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile knighted and assumed the reins of government in 1112 at Palermo, Sicily, Italy.5 He married infanta Elvira Alfonso de Castilla, daughter of Alfonso VI Fernández "el Bravo", rey de León and Elizabeth of France, after 1118; His 1st.9 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile incorporated the mainland territories of Calabria in 1122 at Italy.5 He incorporated the mainland territories of Apulia in 1127.5 He was invested by Pope Honorius II as duke of Apulia, Calabria, and Sicily in 1128.5 Duke of Apulia at Italy between 1128 and 1130.3 He promised a coronation, as King of Sicily, by the Antipope Anacletus II, for his support after the death of Pope Honorius II in 1130.5 He was crowned on Christmas Day as the first King of Sicily on 25 December 1130 at the Cathedral, Palermo, Sicily, Italy.5 King of Sicily at Norman Italy between 25 December 1130 and 1154.3,5 One of the only two portraits of Roger with any claim to authenticity--the mosaic in the Church of the Martorana at Palermo--shows him depicted in Byzantine robes being symbolically crowned by Christ.5 He routed a papal army at Galluccio and taking the Pope captive, Roger forced Innocent to confirm him in the Kingdom of Sicily, with the overlordship of all Italy south of the Garigliano River, in 1139.5 He played no part in the Second Crusade, for he hated the Frankish rulers of Jerusalem ever since his mother's disastrous remarriage to King Baldwin I of Jerusalem 34 years earlier, and most of his Sicilian subjects were Muslims, and toleration was the cornerstone of his kingdom, in 1147.5 He married Sibylle de Bourgogne, daughter of Hugues II "le Pacifique", duc de Bourgogne and Mathilde de Mayenne, in 1150; His 2nd (widower).4,3,10 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile married Beatrix de Réthel, daughter of comte de Réthel Gauthier de Réthel and Beatrix de Namur, in 1151; His 3rd.4,11,12 Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile spent his last 15 years of his life in the most intellectual court of Europe, surrounded by the leading thinkers of the time at Palermo, Sicily, Italy.5 He died on 26 February 1154 at Palermo, Sicily, Italy, at age 58 years, 2 months and 4 days.1,13 He was the predecessor of Guillaume I "el Malo", roi de Sicile; King of Sicily. Roger II "le Magne", roi de Sicile was buried in the Cathedral, Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Despite his repeatedly expressed wish to rest in Cefalù, the King was buried in the cathedral at Palermo, having created, in a Europe rent by schism and exhausted by the Crusades, not just a kingdom but a political and religious climate in which all races, creeds, and cultures were equally encouraged and equally favoured.5
