Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn was the third son of John Comnenus by Anna Dalassena, and a nephew of Isaac I.4 He was scion of a distinguished Byzantine landed family and one of the military magnates who had long urged more effective defense measures, particularly against the Turks' encroaching on Byzantine provinces in eastern and central Anatolia.4 Described by his daughter Anna in her Alexiad thusly: "Alexius indeed was not especially tall but rather broad, and yet his breadth was well proportioned to his height. When standing he did not strike the onlookers with such admiration, but if when sitting on the imperial throne, he shot forth the fierce splendour of his eyes, he seemed to be a blaze of lightning, such irresistible radiance shone from his face, nay from his whole person. He had black arched eyebrows, from beneath which his eyes darted a glance at once terrible and tender, so that from the gleam of his eyes, the radiance of his face, the dignified curve of his cheeks and the ruddy colour that suffused them, both awe and confidence were awakened. His broad shoulders, muscular arms, mighty chest, in fact his generally heroic appearance, evoked in the multitude the greatest admiration and pleasure. From his whole person emanated beauty and grace and dignity, and an unapproachable majesty."5 He was the father of Anna Komnene; the daughter of the emperor Alexius I Comnenus.6 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn was born in 1048 at Constantinople, Byzantine Empire.4 He was the son of domestikos ton scholon Ioannes I Komnenos and Anna Dalassena.3 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn gave able military service during the short reigns of Romanus IV, Michael VII, and Nicephorus III between 1068 and 1081.4 He married Eirene Doukaina, basilissa Rhomaiôn, daughter of Andronikos Doukas and Marija Kometopoulos, in 1078; His 2nd.7,3,4 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn was the successor of Nikephoros III Botanteiates, basileus Rhomaiôn; Emperor.8,9 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn halted the further encroachment of the Seljuq Turks, who had already established the Sultanate of Rum (or Konya) in central Anatolia, and made agreements with Sulayman ibn Qutalmïsh of Konya in 1081.4 He drove back the south Italian Normans, headed by Robert Guiscard, who were invading western Greece, using Venetian help, and granting the Venetians extensive trading privileges in return, between 1081 and 1082.4 He seized the Byzantine throne from Nicephorus III with the support of his brother Isaac and his mother, the formidable Anna Dalassena, and with that of the powerful Ducas family, in particular the Caesar John Ducas, grandfather of his wife, on 4 April 1081 at Constantinople, Byzantium.4 Emperor at Byzantine Empire between 4 April 1081 and 15 August 1118.8 He was a witness where Robrecht I "de Fries", Graaf van Vlaanderen took temporary service in the army of the Byzantine emperor Alexius I, in his war against the Seljuq Turks in 1090.10 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn defeated the Pechenegs, Turkic nomads who had been continually surging over the Danube River into the Balkans in 1091.4 He made agreements with Sulayman's son Qïlïch Arslan, as well as with other Muslim rulers on Byzantium's eastern border, in 1093.4 He battled with the arriving crusaders outside of the Theodosian Walls, and convinced Godfrey and Bohemund to swear an oath of allegiance to him, and that they would return to the empire any of the empire's former possessions that they might recapture, on 9 April 1097 at Constantinople, Byzantine Empire. He successfully repulsed Bohemond I of Antioch's assault on Avlona in western Greece between 1107 and 1108.4 He was said to have hosted the Norwegian King, Sigurd, on Sigurd's return home from Jerusalem in 1110.11 He was a witness where King of Norway Sigurdr I jórsalafara of Ringerike sailed into Constantinople, where "Emperor Kirjalax" who had also heard of King Sigurd's expedition, ordered the city port of Constantinople to be
opened in 1110.11 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn died on 15 August 1118 at Constantinople, Byzantine Empire, at age 70 years.4 Alexios I Komnenos, basileus Rhomaiôn was buried in the monastery of Philanthropos.
