He was laid in a mound at Ekkjalsbakke.1 He Earl Sigurd killed Melbridge Tooth, a Scotch earl, and hung his head to his stirrup-leather; but the calf of his leg were scratched by the teeth, which were sticking out from the head, and the wound caused inflammation in his leg, of which the earl died..1 He was given the lands of the Orkney and the Shetland Isles by his brother, and made earl of them by Harald Fairhair.1 He was the successor of Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl; Jarl of Orkney.2 Jarl of Orkney at Britain between 875 and 892.2 Orknøyjarl Sigurdr Eysteinsson was the predecessor of Thorsteinn Raudr Óláfsson, Orknøyjarl; Jarl of Orkney.2 Orknøyjarl Sigurdr Eysteinsson died in 892. He died from the infection passed on by the teeth of a trophy head.3

     Also called Jarl Ragnald I of Orkney.6 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl was King Harald Fairhair's dearest friend, and the king had the greatest regard for him.4 Also called Jarl Rognvaldr of Møre.7 He was per late Icelandic sources, for which there is no good reason to believe that these generations are historical, a son of Eysteinn Glumra, son of Ívarr, son of Hálfdan the Old.7 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl also went by the name of Ragnvald "the Wise".4,5 He associated with unknown , a concubine.8 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl was born circa 830 at Maer, Norway. He was the son of Eysteinn Glumra, Jarl of the Uplanders and Aseda Rögnvaldsdóttir.4,5 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl became one of Harald Fairhair's men the summer before the battle at Solskel circa August 866.4 He was a witness where Haraldr Hårfager Hálfdanarson, King of Norway laid claim to both the More and Raumsdal districts after defeating their kings in battle in 867.4 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl was set as chief over the two districts, North More and Raumsdal, by Harald Fairhair, who strengthened him both with men of might and bondes, and gave him the help of ships to defend the coast against enemies in 867.4 He was given South Möre to govern as well, following the defeat of King Arnvid by Harald Hairfair, but the Firdafylke still remained in the possession of King Ardbjorns brother Vemund in 868.4 He was made Jarl of North and South Möre and of Raumsdal by King Harald Haarfagri after his victory of Solskiel over Hunthiof, King of Möre, and Nokve, King of Raumsdal circa 869.5 Jarl of Raumsdal at Norway in 869.5 Jarl of North and South Möre at Norway in 869.5 He was went over Eid, and southwards to the Fjord district. There he heard news of King Vemund, and came by night to a place called Naustdal, where King Vemund was living in guest-quarters. Earl Ragnvald surrounded the house in which they were quartered, and burnt the king in it, together with ninety men, and then took all the ships Vemund had, and all the goods he could get hold of, in 869 at the winter of.4 He married Ragnhild Hrolfsdotter of Norway, daughter of Hrólfr Nefja of Norway, before 870.8 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl married Ermina , a concubine before 870; A "more Danico" or "Danish wife."9,3 Jarl of Orkney between 874 and 875.10 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl was the predecessor of Orknøyjarl Sigurdr Eysteinsson; Jarl of Orkney.10 Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl was given the Orkney and Shetland isles in compensation for the loss of his son Ivar in the wars of Harald Fairhair against the viking raiders in the western lands in 888.4,11 He died in 894. He was killed by two jealous sons of Harlald Fairhair. Halfdan Haleg and Gudrod Ljome set off one spring with a great force, and came suddenly upon Earl Ragnvald, earl of More, and surrounded the house in which he was, and burnt him and sixty men in it.4

Wifredo "el Velloso", conde de Barcelona also went by the name of Wilfred "the Hairy".4 He was born circa 847. He was the son of Sunifred I, Margrave of Barcelona and Ermesende de Carcassonne.1,2 Wifredo "el Velloso", conde de Barcelona fought his way, brother Miró by his side, to power in Catalonia between 870 and 878.5 He was created the Christian kingdom (county) of Catalonia with a certain degree of independence from the Frankish Kings between 873 and 897.6 Count of Urgell-Cerdanya-Confiuent at Catalonia, Spain, between 873 and 898.7,8 He married Winidilde van Vlaanderen, daughter of Boudewijn I "de IJzeren Arm", Markgraaf van Vlaanderen and Judith, Queen of England, in 877.9,10 Wifredo "el Velloso", conde de Barcelona was the last Count of Barcelona chosen by the Carolingians, the position afterwards becoming hereditary, in 878.11,12 Count of Gerona and Barcelona at Catalonia, Spain, after 878.13 He founded the monastery of Santa María in 888 at the Plaça Abat Oliba, Ripoll, Gerona Province, Catalan, Spain. "The Benedictine Monastery of Santa María (Monasterio de Santa María) was founded in 888 by the Count of Barcelona, Wilfred the Hairy. Most of the building was destroyed by fire in 1835, but the magnificent stone-carvings of the 12th-century portal survive, together with the two-storey Romanesque cloister. Described as “the Bible in stone”, the detailed sculpted façade of the west portal portrays characters and events from the Vision of the Apocalypse, Exodus, and the Book of Kings."14 He refused to recognize Odo as king after 888, from then on dating his charters "during the reign of Christ, in expecation of a king".4 He died circa 21 August 897. He was killed in battle with the Moors.8

The Counts of Anjou were noted for their ferocity and avariciousness, and thus have had a much larger impact on the development of France and Europe in general than the size of this quite small region southwest of Normandy would imply. 2nd Count of Anjou at France between 879 and 898.1 He died circa 898. Lambert II von Spoleto, römischer Kaiser was the predecessor of Wido II, römischer Kaiser; King of Italy.2 Lambert II von Spoleto, römischer Kaiser was crowned coemperor with his father, Guy of Spoleto, in 892 at Ravenna.3 King of Italy at Frankish Empire between 892 and 898.2 He succeeded his father, with the pope's blessing, and in concurrence with the East Frankish king Arnulf, to the imperial title in 894.3 Imperator Augustus between 894 and 898.2 He was deposed by Pope Formosus who crowned Arnulf of Carinthia, who had invaded Italy and captured Rome, as Emperor instead in February 896.3 He avenged the pope's crowning of Arnulf by having Formosus' body exhumed by the new pope, Stephen VI (VII), dressed in his pontifical robes, and tried and convicted in St. Peter's for a variety of crimes. Then, naked and mutilated, the body of Formosus was flung into a potter's field and eventually thrown into the Tiber.3 He remained in power as Emperor as Arnulf of Carinthia abandoned his march on Spoleto, taking ill and leaving Italy for Germany.3 He was a witness where Kaiser Berengar I von Friaul marched on Pavia, but was stopped by Lambert, the son of his former rival Guy of Spoleto, in 898.3 Lambert II von Spoleto, römischer Kaiser died on 15 October 898 at Marengo, Lombardy, Italy. While on a hunting trip, he counterattacked and defeated Berenger of Friuli who'd marched on Pavia. On his return to Marengo, he was killed, either by assassination or by a fall from his horse.3,1

     Alfred "the Great", King of the English was a witness where Saher III de Quency the Surety, 1st Earl of Winchester 15th in descent from Alfred the Great.8 Alfred "the Great", King of the English was the fifth son of Ethelwulf, or Æthelwulf, King of Wessex, and Osburh, his queen, of the royal house of the Jutes of Wight.9 He was born circa 848 at Wantage, Berkshire, England.2,6 He was the son of Æthelwulf, King of the English and Osburh of Hampshire.4,5,6,7 Alfred "the Great", King of the English was sent by his father to Rome, where he was anointed king by Pope Leo IV; but this, like many other legends which have crystallized about the name of Alfred, is without foundation circa 852.9 He accompanied his father Ethelwulf on a pilgrimage to Rome, a visit, recorded by Asser, accepted as authentic by modern historians, in 855.9 He married Ealhswith, Queen of England, daughter of Æthelred Mucil, Ealdorman of the Gaini and Eadburga of Mercia, in 868.2,5,6,7,10,9 Alfred "the Great", King of the English and Æthelred I, King of the English defeated the Danish kings Bagseg and Halfdan at the battle of Ashdown in 870. Alfred "the Great", King of the English succeeded his brother Ethelred to the throne of England in 871.6 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, with the consent of the familia of the church of Malmesbury, to Dudig, his minister; lease, for four lives, of 4 hides (cassati) at Chelworth, near Crudwell, Wilts., with reversion to the church of Malmesbury" in 871 at x 899, Malmesbury.11 He appeared in a charter which read "King Alfred to St Peter's church, Athelney, Somerset; grant of land at Reodbeorh, with adjacent fishery at Reodwer" in 871 at x 899.12 He was was one of the greatest men in history. He founded the British Navy, organized the militia, compiled a code of laws, built schools and monastaries, and invited scholars to live at his court. He was himself a scholar and translated many books. He was was crowned King in 871 at Winchester.6 King of England at Winchester, England, between 871 and 26 October 899.7 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the English, to Athelney Abbey; grant of privileges in Stathmoor, Saltmoor, Haymoor and Currymoor, with other moors in North Curry, with grant to Abbot John of privileges and revenues in East Lyng, Somerset" in 872.13 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king, and Æthelred, archbishop, to Liaba, son of Birgwine; grant of land at Ileden, Kent, in return for 25 mancuses of gold" in 873.14 He left a will 873 x 888; "Will of King Alfred, including bequests of land at Lambourn and Wantage, Berks; at Stratton in Trigg and elsewhere in Cornwall; at Axmouth, Branscombe, Cullompton, Exminster, Hartland, Lifton, Tiverton, Whitchurch, Devon; at Sturminster Marshall, Dorset; at Candover, Crondall, Hurstbourne Priors, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Kingsclere, Meon, Hants; at Arreton in the Isle of Wight; in Kent; at Cannington, Carhampton, Chewton Mendip, Crewkerne, Kilton, Wedmore and Yeovil, Somerset; at Eashing, Godalming, Guildford, Leatherhead and Thunderfield Castle, Surrey; at Aldingbourne, Angmering, Beckley, Beeding, Beddingham, Dean, Ditchley, Felpham, Lyminster, Rotherfield, Sutton and Steyning, Sussex; at Amesbury, Ashton Keynes, Bedwyn, Chippenham, Chisledon, Edington and Pewsey, Wilts; also æt Suttune (Sutton, Hants. or Wilts.), æt Aweltune (Alton, Hants., or Alton Priors, Wilts.), æt Deone (? East and West Dean, Sussex, or West Dean, Wilts.), æt Sutheswyrth (? Lustleigh in Devon), æt Mylenburnam (? Silverton, Devon), æt Welewe and æt Welig (Wellow in Hants., Wilts. or Somerset), æt Cumtune (Compton) and æt Burnham (Somerset); the beneficiaries including Winchester (Cathedral) and the king's children."15 He created a will leaving extensive lands whose beneficiaries included Winchester (Cathedral) and the king's children between 873 and 888.16 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of Wessex, to Athelney Abbey; grant of 10 hides (cassatae) at Long Sutton, Somerset" circa 878. He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to Denewulf, bishop of Winchester, and the church of SS Peter and Paul, Winchester; regrant of the reversion of 50 hides (manentes) at Chisledon, Wilts., and 60 at Hurstbourne Priors, Hants., in exchange for 100 hides at Cholsey, Hagbourne and Bæstlæsford (Basildon), Berks" in 878 at x 899.17 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king, to Denewulf, bishop; grant of 8 hides (manentes) at Ruishton, Somerset" on 19 October 878.18 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Saxons, to Athelstan, his minister; grant of 15 hides (cassati) at Cyricestun (? Somerset), in return for 30 mancuses and 2 hides at Stoce (? Stoke St Mary, Somerset)" in 882 at Epsom, Surrey.19 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the English and the Saxons, and Æthelred, subregulus et patricius Merciorum, to Wærferth, bishop of Worcester; grant of land æt Hwætmundes stane in London, with commercial privileges" in 889.20 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to Berhtwulf, his faithful comes; grant of 12 hides (manentes) at Plush in Buckland Newton, Dorset, and 2 (? for 5) at Raddington, Somerset, in exchange for land at Sutton Poyntz, Dorset" on 2 August 891.21 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to Æthelhelm, comes; grant of 10 hides (manentes) at North Newnton, Wilts" in 892.22 He appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to Deormod; grant of 5 hides (mansi) at Appleford, Berks., in exchange for land at Harandun (Horn Down near East Hendred, Berks.) and 50 mancuses of gold" in 892 at x 899.23 He was a witness where Brenin Ddyfed Hyfaidd o Ddyfed submitted to the overlordship of King Alfred the Great of England rather than to Anarawd of Gwynedd before 893.24 Alfred "the Great", King of the English appeared in a charter which read "Alfred, king of the Anglo-Saxons, to Æthelhelm, comes; grant of 10 hides (manentes) at North Newnton, Wilts" in 898 at Woolmer, Hants..25 He was a witness where Æthelfrith of Wessex first holder of the bequest from his granduncle, King Alfred before 899.26 Alfred "the Great", King of the English was a witness where Æthelhelm of Wessex devised Compton and Crondall by his uncle, King Alfred the Great before 899. Alfred "the Great", King of the English died on 25 October 899 at England.2,3,6 He had not only encouraged men of learning, but laboured himself and gave proof of his own learning: translating into Anglo-Saxon: "The Consolation of Philosophy" of Boëthius; "The History of the World" of Orosius; the "Ecclesiastical History" of Bede, and the "Pastoral Rule" and the "Dialogues" of St. Gregory the Great, and the "Consolation of Philosophy" he not only translated but adapted, adding much of his own.9 Alfred "the Great", King of the English was buried in Hyde Abbey, Winchester, England.6
