Leon II, King of the Ap'xaz was the son of N. N. Anchabadze and N. N. of the Xazars.1 Leon II (Leon I of the newly established kingdom) was styled "King of the Abkhazians" because his dynasty originated from Abkhazia, although it is hard to say who were the eristavis or archons of Abkhazia by their ethnic origin: they could have well been representatives of the local nobility — i.e. Abazghis, Apsils, Sanigs, — or Byzantines.2 Leon II, King of the Ap'xaz was nephew, by his brother, of Leon I of Abkhazia, husband of Prince Achil's niece, and ruler of Egrisi.3 He was nephew of Leon the erist'avi to whom Ap'xazet'i had been given as inheritance.1 Erist'avi of the Ap'xaz at Transcaucasia between 766 and 810.4 King of the Abkhazians at Transcaucasia between 767 and 811.5,3 King of the Abkhazians circa 795.3 He assumed the title of King of the Abkhazians and became fully independent circa 795.3 Took advantage of the differences that were plaguing the Empire and, with the help of the Khazars, he broke away from Constantinople and assumed the title of King circa 795.6 He moved his capital to Kutaisi which was then the centre of Georgian culture.3 He was the predecessor of T'eodos II, King of the Ap'xaz; King of the Ap'xaz.7
