This study covers parts of two states because the COLE families of the area moved back and forth so much. The Jackson Purchase of 1818 opened southwestern Kentucky to settlement, and COLE families were among the first to move in. When Henry County [later divided into Obion, Weakley, and Henry Counties] was carved out of the Western Distict of TN, COLEs were among the first to settle there. We've identified several COLE families who have lived in this area, some of which are probably connected if we can just trace back far enough to find the links. |

Whether your family belongs to one of these lines or to a different one we have yet to identify, I invite you to join our puzzle party. As individuals, we often find a tidbits of information about COLEs whom we can't tie into our own families. This gives us a place to pool our information and perhaps turn one person's mystery into another person's answer. We've done it by tying together smaller area studies, to show the migration pattern of a few key families and organize the pieces that still need to be fitted into the overall puzzle. So far, only Obion and Weakley Counties are up. More to come.... |
Original COLE Families
These are the family patriarchs. If you recognize your own family, you can follow the links to the counties where they lived. If your family doesn't seem to tie into any of these, you can use the county links at the bottom of this page to view the many tidbits we've collected for various COLEs we haven't been able to tie to one of these families.
Andrew COLE was probably in Weakley County by 1850. His son William A. COLE was in Obion County in 1880.
John A. COLE, son of Joseph COLE, was in Obion County by 1865.
John Henry COLE was in Hickman Co. KY in the 1820s, in Obion Co. TN by 1830. His sons James Madison COLE and Marvel COLE remained in Obion Co. TN.
Samuel COLE was in Hickman Co. KY by 1870, along with sons Robert C. and Joseph Benjamin and their families. Joseph Benjamin COLE was in Obion County in 1880.
Listmembers with COLEs in this area include:
Dorothy Grisham Descendant of Joseph E. COLE and wife Ann through their son John A. COLE and grandson Constant J. COLE. These COLEs were in Obion Co. by the 1860s and descendants remain there today.
Sharon McAllister Descendant of John Henry COLE and wife Mary through their son James Madison COLE, Sr. and grandson William A. COLE. They were in the area by the 1820s, left in the 1860s although related COLEs problably remained in the area.
Oleen Pollard Descendant of Samuel COLE and wife Elizabeth through their son Robert C. COLE and granddaughter Susie Etta COLE Johnson. They were in the area by 1870 and descendants remain there today.
