One of the very best places to get information and to meet cousins is to join a discussion list. Lois Kleinhenn Lanier leads the great LANIER list at Rootsweb. To join the LANIER discussion list, send a message with nothing in the subject line and the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the message area for mail mode or for digest mode
The VASOUTH-L list may also be a very interesting venue to information. To join this discussion list, send a message with nothing in the subject line and the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the message area. Click on the email link mail mode or digest mode
The newer VAROOTS-L list may also be of interest. To join this discussion list, send a message with nothing in the subject line and the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the message area. Click on the email link mail mode or digest mode

ANNOUNCEMENT
Lois Kleinhenn Lanier, leader of the LANIER list, and who also heads up the LANIER book project begun in 1997, has announced that they are now ready to publish the first book of the series -- Lois says that so much information was submitted they will be publishing a series of books.
This first book "The Lanier Family in the United States: A Genealogical Compilation of the Descendants of the Immigrant Brothers John and Robert Lanier, Vol. I: John (son of John, the immigrant) and Elizabeth Bird Lanier", is ready to go to press.
Please let Lois know you would like a copy or copies. The price has not been set yet; that depends on the number of copies ordered (so tell your cousins, neighbors, friends, etc.), but she thinks maybe $60-80. Just tell her you will be ordering, and she will let you know the cost later. She needs to know by March 15, 2000.
* The book has more than 700 pages. This is larger than Ingersoll's book. More than 9700 individual names are included.
* 40 people submitted the research included in the book.
* The book includes: a title page, a table of contents, a list of the book committee, submitters' names and contact information, an introduction and guide to using the compilation, the submitted Lanier lines (the bulk of the book), and an index of names included in the book.
* The book will be printed double-sided and bound. It will probably be spiral bound, depending on the cost.
* Following a growing trend in genealogy, private information (dates, places, etc.) will not be included for living people. We have conservatively chosen December 31, 1899 as the cutoff date for including information about the living. This means that anyone born after 12/31/1899 will have no dates, unless a death date is given. The submitter's name and contact information is included, however, so that you will be able to contact them for additional information.
* The compilation will be copyrighted by the compiler for Lanier-L. For Volume I, the copyright will be held by Lois Kleinhenn Lanier. The title page will include this: "COMPILED BY LOIS KLEINHENN LANIER FOR LANIER-L GENEALOGY DISCUSSION LIST HOSTED BY ROOTSWEB GENEALOGICAL DATA COOPERATIVE" and "Copyright 2000, Lois Kleinhenn Lanier for Lanier-L Genealogy Discussion List." All profits will be given to Rootsweb. If that is not possible, profits will be donated to a genealogical organization that benefits Lanier researchers.
