LifeNotes: There is an old record of a Chancery Court lawsuit filed in Montgomery Co. TN on 20 May 1843 and later moved to Robertson Co. TN, that mentions the Laniers. In that suit, John Langford and wife Mary filed the suit against their son-in-law William Anderson Nichols over the ownership of certain slaves that their daughter took with her when she married Nichols. This John and Mary Langford were the John D. Langford and Mary A. Bennett Langford mentioned above. They filed the suit "in the interest of all the other grandchildren of John Lanier, deceased, late of Franklin County, North Carolina, as well as for themselves." In the suit it was stated that Mary was "a grandchild of the said John Lanier, deceased", and that she had a greater right to those slaves than Nichols. There was a deposition in the suit by their son, Charles Wheeler Langford, as to how he came by his slave, Henry. Henry was given to him by his great-aunt Sally (or Sarah) Lanier in Nash Co. NC before he and his family moved to Robertson Co. TN in 1835. John Long has seen the deed abstract in the deed books of Nash Co. NC for this deed of gift to Charles from Sally Lanier.
