Adam Hollinger

LifeNotes: He was of Irish birth (per marriage records -- Immaculate Conception Church of Mobile). A well-known Indian countryman.

Thought to have served in the Revolutionary War.

Named in a 1786 Spanish land grant. He lived among the Creek Indians and operated a river crossing, Hollingers Ferry. He established the Ferry on the Tombigbee River.

About 1797 Adam and some of his friends took Jacob Townshen prisoner and killed him. Read Benjamin Hawkins' account.

GREENWOOD LEFLORE and ROSA DONLEY

Greenwood Leflore

LifeNotes: Went to French Camp, Mississippi when he was 10. Later Greenwood was sent to Nashville to be educated under the care of John Donley, a longtime mail carrier on the Trace.

In 1824, Greenwood returned to the Choctaw country and was soon elected chief of one of the three Choctaw districts in succession to the late Pushmataha. In 1830, he signed the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, which provided for the removal of the Choctaws to the Indian Territory, but when the majority of his tribesmen departed he did not follow. Instead he
remained in Mississippi and was elected to the Mississippi Legislature as a representative from Carroll County from 1831 to 1844.

In 1854 he began work on his mansion, "Malmasion", which lay within the bounds of his 15,000 acre estate. Over $10,000 was spent on the furnishings for one room

Involved in extensive land speculating ventures which encompassed properties in Mississippi and Texas, he supported the Union during the Civil War.
