The MASSACRE of FORT MIMS
This drawing by an anonymous but gifted artist was probably done to illustrate a newspaper account of the massacre. Newspapers of the day were filled with art such as this (photography was not yet invented ). Artists would have been hired to show the gist of the story in a picture and thus make the publication more attrctive.
In the strong linework, this artist has captured what he IMAGINES as the emotions of the moment -- the stark terror of the settlers and the intense anger of the Indians.
