Monroe County, Alabama
1816 Census
At the time of this census, Monroe County was part of the Mississippi Territory. The county contained nearly half of the present State of Alabama. Its western boundary was the ridge of dividing the waters of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers from the Tombigbee and Tuscaloosa rivers; the northen boundary was the mountains of Blount and St. Clair Counties; the southern boundary was the same as the southern boundary of the present day State of Alabama; and the eastern boundary of the county was a line south east from Wetumka to a point below Eufaula.
Monroe County was established on 5 June 1815 and retained the land described above until after the State of Alabama was established. In 1819, Montgomery, Conecuh and Wilcox counties were established, and thus, reduced Monroe County to its present size.
