The Family of Shubael Little and Deborah Barrows

The Family of
Shubael Little and Deborah Barrows

Shubael Little, son of George Little and Esther Cole Whittaker, was born 25 Aug 1790 at Hillsborough, New Hampshire. He and Deborah Barrows were married 4 April 1819 at Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York by the Rev. Hezakiah Field. He died of consumption 03 Oct 1847 at Dexter, age 57 years; and was buried at Sanford's Corner Cemetery, Le Ray, Jefferson County, New York.

Shubael was a carpenter and an elder in the Christian Church [as far as I can tell, this was a variation of Congregationalism]. The 1820 Census shows him engaged in manufacture, while the 1840 Census shows him in manufacture & trade. His death is registered in the early vital records of Hounsfield, where he is described as a clergyman and carpenter. Old family papers describe him as a boss carpenter and a builder of barns and bridges.

Shubael is described as "of Brownville" in the announcement of his marriage, and the family is found residing there in 1820 and 1825. By 1830, however, they have relocated to Le Ray where they continue until at least 1835. The 1840 Census shows they have moved again, this time to Hounsfield.

As is frequently the case, he was not totally alone in his move to Jefferson County. He had a younger brother (George) who bought property in Brownville in 1823, and then sold it to Shubael before his death in 1826. He was also a nephew of David Little who moved his family to Brownville about 1800; and whose descendants continued in the area for many years.

Deborah Barrows, daughter of Samuel Barrows and Azubah Ransom, was born 24 March 1795, probably at Woodstock, Vermont. She and Shubael Little were married 4 April 1819 at Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York by the Rev. Hezakiah Field. [Rev. Field was married to her aunt, Kethurah Ransom] She died 22 May 1855, age 60; and was buried at Sanford's Corner Cemetery, Le Ray, Jefferson County, New York.

She is found as head of household on the 1850 Census in Hounsfield.
