Ancestors of Benjamin Hoar


I've seen it written that any pedigree is just the current hypothesis. In that spirit, the following is my first attempt to construct an ancestry for Benjamin Hall/Hoar. Hopefully, a significant revision will be available before the summer is over. Corrections, comments, connections and additions are most welcome!

Generation One

1. Benjamin1 Hoar (William, #2); born 19 Jun 1804 at Warren, Rhode Island;1,2 born 20 Jun 1804 at Warren, Rhode Island;3,4 he and Martha Waldron were married circa 22 Nov 1824 at Bristol, Bristol county, Rhode Island, and it was reported in the Providence Gazette of 22 Nov 1824, the Rhode Island American of 23 Nov 1824, the Providence Phenix of 24 Nov 1824 and the Providnece Journal of 25 Nov 1824;5,6,7,8,9,10 he died 5 Aug 1893 at 41 Everett (?) Ave., Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, age 89 of old age;2 buried at Warren, Rhode Island.2

He was also known as Benjamin Hall.5,11,2 Marcia said, "Their name was Hall. And that name had been changed. It was originally Haw. And they didn't like the sound of it. (laughter) So, it was changed to Hall."12 He was enumerated with Henry C. Cross on the census of 1880 Chelsea, Suffolk County, Massachusetts,. He was listed as the father, but was really the father-in-law, of the head of house. He was a tobaconist and described as a widowed, white, male, age 75 years. He and both of his parents were listed as born in Rhode Island.11 He was a cigar maker.2


Generation Two

2. Captain William2 Hoar (William, #4); baptized 30 Jun 1765 at St. Michael's Church, Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island;13,14 born circa 1766 at Rhode Island;15,16 he and Molly Bowen (see #3), daughter of Jonothan Bowen and Elizabeth Munroe, were married 30 Nov 1788 at Warren, Rhode Island, by Rev. John Pitman;2,16,17,18 he died 6 Sep 1810 at Warren, Rhode Island, in his 46th year;19,16,20 buried at the North Burial Ground, Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island.19

He was also known as William Hall.2 He is head of household on the census of 1790 at Warren, Rhode Island,. The household consists of one free white male 16 or more years of age and two free white females.21 He was admitted in 1794 at the Methodist Church, Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island.22

Children of Captain William2 Hoar and Molly Bowen (see #3) all born Warren, Rhode Island, were as follows:

3. Molly2 Bowen (Jonothan, #6); born 20 Sep 1768 at Warren, Bristol county, Rhode Island;15,16,35 she and Captain William Hoar (see #2), son of William Hoar Jr. and Mrs. Phebe Carey, were married 30 Nov 1788 at Warren, Rhode Island, by Rev. John Pitman.2,16,17,18

She was also known as Mary Bowen.36,16,35


Generation Three

4. William3 Hoar Jr. (William, #8); born 28 Jul 1742 at Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island, (the VR list his birth in 1743, but this must be wrong because of his baptism in 1742 and the birth of his brother Benjamin in 1743);13,37,14 baptized 16 Oct 1742 at St. Michael's Church, Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island;14 he and Mrs. Phebe Carey (see #5) were married 31 May 1764 at Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island, by Rev. John Burt;13,38 he died 19 Jul 1787 age 44;19 buried at the North Burial Ground, Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island.19

Children of William3 Hoar Jr. and Mrs. Phebe Carey (see #5) were as follows:

5. Mrs. Phebe3 Carey; born circa 1744;19 she and William Hoar Jr. (see #4), son of William Hoar and Susanna Bragg, were married 31 May 1764 at Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island, by Rev. John Burt;13,38 she died 11 Dec 1821 at Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island;19,53,27 buried at the North Burial Ground, Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island.19

She is head of household on the census of 1790 at Bristol, Rhode Island,. Phebe's household consisted of two free white males 16 or more years of age, two free white males less than 16 years of age, and three free white females.21 Her death was reported in the Providence Journal, the Providence Gazette, the Providence Phenix and the Rhode Island American.54,55,56,20

6. Jonothan3 Bowen and Elizabeth Munroe (see #7) were married 7 Nov 1759 at Warren, Bristol county, Rhode Island.35

Generation Four

8. William4 Hoar (William, #16); born 21 May 1710 at Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island;13,57 he and Susanna Bragg published their intention to marry 26 Oct 1734 Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island;58 he and Susanna Bragg (see #9), daughter of Henry Bragg and Susanna (--?--), were married 17 Nov 1734 at St. Michael's Church, Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island, by Rev. John Haber (?). Based on the Bristol vital record, Arnold lists the date for this marriage "--gber 14, 1734;"13,59,58 he died 22 Oct 1786 at Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island, age 76 (or 23 Oct 1786);19,60 buried at the Juniper Hill Cemetery, Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island. His death is recorded by Rev. Henry Wight on the 23rd and it may be that this was the date of burial.19,61

Children of William4 Hoar and Susanna Bragg (see #9) were as follows:

Susanna4 Bragg (Henry, #18); born 28 Jul 1712 at Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island;13 she and William Hoar published their intention to marry 26 Oct 1734 Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island;58 she and William Hoar (see #8), son of William Hoar and Sarah (--?--), were married 17 Nov 1734 at St. Michael's Church, Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island, by Rev. John Haber (?). Based on the Bristol vital record, Arnold lists the date for this marriage "--gber 14, 1734."13,59,58


Generation Five

16. William5 Hoar and Sarah (--?--) (see #17) were married.13,57
