Annual Cloud Gathering
14-16 July in Huntsville is
first time for Alabama

Plans are made for the 2000 edition of the annual gathering of Clouds from all over the country. This will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Huntsville, Alabama, over the weekend of July 14-16, 2000. This annual meeting of the Cloud Family Assoc. has been held in eight states (TX, AR, LA, KS, TN, PA, NC, and GA) over the past 22 years, but never before in Alabama.

The first event of the gathering will be held on Friday evening, July 14. The meeting will follow custom in allowing attendees to introduce themselves, tell where they live, identify their earliest confirmed Cloud ancestor and/or tell what Cloud mystery they are seeking to unravel. We will also start a series of informative programs. Everyone with interest is invited.

Four workshop/seminar sessions, a business meeting, and a luncheon will constitute the serious part of the Gathering.

The Gathering will conclude with a tour of old Huntsville, Cloud Town, Cloud's Cove, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Compact disk of
vast Cloud data
to be previewed

Do you dream of an indexed searchable computer file of 2296 pages of information on various Cloud families? Well, this is it!

Clouds of various families have gathered data from public records, various publications, and private family collections. This material has been included in Cloud Family Association files by the Historian, who has published the best of it in the Cloud Family Journal over the past 22 years. This gold mine of data has been put into CD form by CFA member Kenny Cloud of Warner Robins, GA.

Kenny will give an overview of the CD and its use at a general session and demonstrate its detailed use in private sessions.

Projected CD pricing is $25 for CFA members and $50 for others.

Robert S. Davis, Jr., is Luncheon Speaker

Saturday's luncheon speaker will be Robert S. Davis, Jr., Director of the Family & Regional History Program at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, AL. He had much experience in the Georgia State Archives before being recruited by Wallace State. He is the author of 14 books on history and genealogy. Much of his attention has been focused on the Revolutionary War period in the southeastern states.

"I'm a big fan of his. I have several of his books in my library and he has been very helpful to me," says Jan Cloud, who has pretty good credentials as a genealogist herself (page 3). In addition to the luncheon talk, Mr. Davis will participate in a seminar/workshop during the day Saturday.

The Hilton Hotel (at right) on the Big Spring Lagoon in downtown Huntsville is the site for this year's Gathering. The Hilton can be reached at (256)-533-1400. [Time has expired for making reservations through the Hilton's "800" number (800-445-8667)]. Be sure to ask for special $65 Cloud Family Gathering room rate.
Jan Cloud workshop is special benefit
We CFA members know Jan Cloud as that bright and charming lady who does a great job with the Cloud Family Journal and is super helpful in getting folks out of genealogical research quagmires.

Ever wonder how she can be so knowledgeable and effective? In short, she works at it!

Starting with a degree in history and geography, Jan has been a professional genealogist for 25 years. She is an alumna of the National Institute of Genealogical Research (National Archives in Washington, DC) as

well as the University of Oklahoma.

Jan hosts a TV show, Ancestor Search, on KCTV in Santa Barbara, CA, and has been a featured speaker for genealogical society conferences in California, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. She had to miss the '99 CFA Gathering because of a two-week-long speaking engagement in New Zealand that was a "can't miss."

She teaches genealogy courses at Santa Barbara City College and has been president of a 500-member county

genealogical society and vice president of a statewide organization. "Awards of Merit" are routine fare for her.

Get this: she has been elected president of chapters of both the Daughters of Union Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

We are indeed fortunate that Jan's late husband, a renowned scientist, was a Cloud (Dr. Preston Cloud) and that Jan has continued her dedication to that heritage.

Don't miss her workshop, tentatively set as Session IV.

Activities available for non-genealogists
There will be plenty for other members of the family to do while the chief family historian/genealogist is gathering information in meetings.

The U.S. Space and Rocket Center is the primary attraction for visitors to Huntsville.

The Sunday tour will only scratch the surface. It has exhibits, movies, and thrill rides. So, other members of the family may want an advanced visit. A "tourist loop trolley" will take you to it.

The Early Works hands-on museum is a new attraction for kids and adults. The Constitution Hall Village is an interesting look at history. Both are within walking distance of the hotel.

The Big Spring Lagoon and International Park is a pleasant place to walk. The Art Museum and the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library are nearby.

Several shopping malls are a short drive away and can be reached by bus. Golf and fishing are available in abundance.

Be kind to Cloud kin
who are not named Cloud

You received this bulletin because you are a member of the Cloud Family Association (CFA), are known to have an interest in Cloud history, or simply because you live in the area of the meeting and your name is Cloud.

If it's just a matter of your name and you are not interested in your Cloud ancestry, please pass this along to someone you know who also has Cloud ancestry but is not listed by the surname Cloud or does not live in the area. Keep in mind a married sister, an aunt, or a cousin. This may be a big favor to them if they are frustrated in their search for more knowledge of their Cloud heritage. We may have no other way to know they have an interest in Cloud history and genealogy.

Then, reconsider. The annual gathering is a great opportunity to have your own family reunion.

The Cloud Family Association is a non-profit organization devoted to the collection and preservation of information about the various branches of the Cloud family, past and present.

Officers for the 1999-2000 organization year are: President Leonard Cloud of Houston, TX; 1st VP Jane Ellison of Gainesville, GA; 2nd VP Cecil Stokes of Huntsville, AL; Secretary-Treasurer Linda Boose of Eastland, TX; and Historian Jan Cloud of Santa Barbara, CA.

The mailing address for the CFA is c/o Linda Boose, Sec./Treas; 508 Crestwood Drive; Eastland, TX 76448

The CFA web pages are at: http://genweb.net/~cloud/
