Generation No. 1

        1.  Walter17 Clopton, The Elder, of "Callowell"  (William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham)1 was born Abt. 1687 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Aft. June 26, 1758 in New Kent County, Virginia2.  He married Mary Jarratt September 4, 1711 in St. Peter's Parish Church, New Kent County, Virginia3, daughter of Robert Jarratt and Mary.

There are many troubling elements regarding the listing of the children currently found in both the Lucy Erwin and Gene Clopton, Clopton genealogies.  The Erwin book did not list Elizabeth or Richard. Gene Clopton notes the Parish Registry is mutilated, and Richard is listed as Richard son of Walter and Mary------, and concludes Richard "must be "Clopton" as no other Walter and Mary is known in St. Peter's Parish at the time."  The registry notes the birth or baptism of Anne, a son, Mary, Walter, and Rob(ert).   No proof has been offered that Walter (born 1720, died in infancy).  Cordelia Belle Clopton, lists the children as Walter, Mary, Robert, Deve(reaux), Naomi, Margaret, and Anne.  There is a strong belief that at least some of the children may belong to another Clopton male.  There are a number of Clopton adults of this period who have not yet been connected with a family.

Children of Walter Clopton and Mary Jarratt are:

+      2                 i.    Ann18 Clopton, of New Kent, born July 3, 1712 in New Kent County, Virginia.

+      3                ii.    William Clopton, Am. Rev., of New Kent, born November 19, 1714 in New Kent County, Virginia; died 1785.

+      4               iii.    Elizabeth Clopton, of New Kent, born 1715 in New Kent County, Virginia; died in probably North Carolina.

5               iv.    Mary Clopton, of New Kent, born August 29, 17164.

        6                v.    Walter Clopton, I, of Virginia, born March 24, 1719/205; died Abt. 1721.

7               vi.    Robert Clopton, of Virginia, born June 4, 17256.

8              vii.    Devereaux Clopton, of New Kent, born August 30, 17277.

13             xii.    Walter Clopton, The Younger, of New Kent, born February 18, 1739/409.

Generation No. 2

        2.  Ann18 Clopton, of New Kent (Walter17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born July 3, 1712 in New Kent County, Virginia10.  She married Benjamin Bradley, of Charles City, son of Joseph Bradley, of Charles City County, Virginia.  He was born 1708 in Charles City County, Virginia, and died 1768.

No proof has been found that Ann Clopton married anyone or had any children.  The theory of a possible Bradley-Clopton connection has been carefully researched by Frank Bradley, the former Genealogical Specialist, New York Public Library.  After extensive research on the Bradley Family, it is his opinion that a very strong case can be made supporting this marriage based on several points:

        1. Walter Clopton (her father) was named guardian of Jesse, Susannah & Elizabeth Bradley; 2. Saint Peter's Parish Registry lists the children of Benjamin and Ann Bradley; 3. the similarity of given names of the children of Walter Clopton & Benjamin Bradley; 4.  Bradleys married into the Clopton and Jarratt families; and, 5. The Rev. Devereux Jarratt (1733-1801) wrote "my uncle was the first who had that name (Devereux) in Virginia."  The Rev. Devereux may have been named after Devereux Clopton, his "Clopton" Uncle, or he may have been speaking of Devereux Jarratt, his "Jarratt" uncle.  See "Walking the Primrose Path," Volume I, for more on the Devereux family.

Children of Ann Clopton and Benjamin Bradley are:

        14               i.    James19 Bradley, of Possom Run.

+      15              ii.    Walter Bradley, of Long Bridge.

        16             iii.    Elizabeth Bradley.

17             iv.    Rachel Bradley, born May 20, 173611.

        18              v.    Ann Bradley, born August 8, 173712.

        19             vi.    Joice Bradley.

        20            vii.    Jesse Bradley.

        21           viii.    Benjamin Bradley, Jr..

        23               x.    William Bradley.

        24              xi.    Devereux Bradley.

        3.  William18 Clopton, Am. Rev., of New Kent (Walter17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born November 19, 1714 in New Kent County, Virginia13, and died 178514.  He married Cassandra Crump, daughter of Richard Crump.  She was born Abt. April 29, 172015.

There is no proof that Cassandra's last name is "Crump."  There were many members of the Crump family attending St. Peter's Parish Church.  However, no evidence has been submitted to date to further strengthen this Crump connection, although some descendants believe she was a member of the Crump family.

Children of William Clopton and Cassandra Crump are:

+      25               i.    Walter19 Clopton, of New Kent, born April 29, 1739 in New Kent County, Virginia.

+      28             iv.    Mary Elizabeth Clopton, born November 13, 1737 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bef. 1787 in Hard Labor Creek,South Carolina.

        4.  Elizabeth18 Clopton, of New Kent (Walter17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham) was born 1715 in New Kent County, Virginia16, and died in probably North Carolina.  She married William Ballard Aft. September 10, 1774.  He was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, and died in Halifax County, North Carolina.

The information regarding Elizabeth Clopton & William Ballard was contained in a letter from Clifton F. Davis, Esq., Shreveport, Louisiana, dated August 11, 1938 and was sent to Lucy Lane Erwin.  But to date, there is no proof that Elizabeth Clopton married William Ballard nor that an Elizabeth Clopton was the daughter of Walter Clopton and Mary Jarrett.

William and Elizabeth lived in Lunenburg County, Virginia.  There is a deed to him dated December 3, 1735.  About 1760 they migrated to the Scotland Neck Vicinity, Halifax County, North Carolina.  His will, dated September 10, 1774,  names his wife and nine children.

Children of Elizabeth Clopton and William Ballard are:

+      29               i.    Mary19 Ballard, born November 22, 1737 in probably Lunenburg County, Virginia.

+      32             iv.    Martha Ballard, born November 2, 1749 in probably Lunenburg County, Virginia; died November 5, 1827 in Newberry County, Sourth Carolina.

33              v.    Nancy Ann Ballard17, born 1751 in probably Lunenburg County, Virginia.  She married William Lenoir.

34             vi.    Walter Clopton Ballard17, born Abt. 1753 in probably Lunenburg County, Virginia; died 1801 in Halifax County, North Carolina.  He married Rebecca Taylor May 23, 1786.

36           viii.    Salumith Ballard, born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, probably; died Abt. 1841 in Warren County, North Carolina, probably18.  She married William Burt19; died Abt. 1823 in Warren County, North Carolina, probably20.

37              ix.    William Sorrell Ballard, born in probably Lunenburg County, Virginia.

        9.  Margaret18 Clopton, of New Kent (Walter17, William16, William15, Walter14, William13, Richard12, William11, John10, William9, Thomas8, Walter7, William6, Walter5, William4, Walter3, William2, Guillaume1 Peche, Lord Of Cloptunna and Dalham)21 was born September 9, 1728 in New Kent, Virginia21, and died 1824 in Buckingham County, Virginia21.  She married (1) Thomas Pasley.  He was born July 7, 1724 in New Kent County, Virginia22, and died Bet. 1762 and 1766 in Buckingham County, Virginia.  She married (2) James Bristow, Jr.23 176623.  He was born September 28, 1751 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia23, and died April 12, 1804 in Virginia23.

Why would Margaret marry a fifteen year old boy when she was 38?  This type of arrangement did happen from time to time, even in those days, but could it be that Margaret is actually a daughter of one of the males listed as her brother?

Children of Margaret Clopton and Thomas Pasley are:

        38               i.    Frances19 Pasley, born January 16, 1753 in New Kent Co. Va.24.

8 Nov. 1833 St. Francois Co.,Mo

James Caldwell, aged between 70 and 71, declares in the Spring of 1778 he served a tour of militia duty of fifteen days pursuing a party of  hostile Indians who had burned Farlow's Fort in Culbertson's Bottom on New River, under Captain Archibald Woods, in Greenbrier County, Virginia He served another tour for his father in the Spring of 1779 under Capt. Thomas Wright for one month at the house of William Lafferty in Greenbrier County on New River at the mouth of Indian Creek. He served both tours before he was 16 years old.

In the fall of 1779 he emigrated to Kentucky and in the Spring following he returned to Virginia. In 1781, he served a tour of duty as a drafted militia man for one month under Capt. Archibald Woods who was stationed at the house of Thomas Shelton at the mouth of Richland Creek on New River in Greenbrier Co. He served another tour the following month at the same place under the same officer as a substitute for a Mr. Richards

Late in the fall of the same year he served a tour of one month under Captain Archibald Woods, stationed at the house of William Lacy on New River. The field officers were Col. Samuel Brown and Lt. Col. John Stuart.  In 1782 in Kentucky he was drafted and served one month under Capt. John Woods who was stationed at Estill's Fort on the waters of Silver and Downing Creek. He served one month at the same place in the same year as substitute for Henry Boyers, during which time they were fired upon by Indians, which was returned by them. The received no injury. These services were rendered in Lincoln Co., Ky. under Col. Benjamin Logan.

In the fall of the same year he was drafted and rendezvoused at Bryan's Station in Fayette Co. under Capt. Andrew Kinkead, Lt. William Young, Ens.John Bryan, Col. John Logan commandant of the battalion, Col. Benjamin Logan Commandant of the regiment, and Commander in Chief General George Rogers Clark. They joined the army where Cincinnati now stands and marched to New Chillicothe on the head of Big Miami where they killed sixteen warriors and took about as many prisoners, women and children. The Indians fired on them in the night and there was considerable firing on both sides; the Indians bearing off their dead if they had any.  In the Fall of 1781 he took up his permanent residence in Lincoln County, Kentucky in the neighborhood of Col. William Whitley who fell in the battle at the River Thames.

He was at the recapture of a Mrs. McClure at the Horse lick on Rockcastle River in Kentucky and also that of a negro woman who was a prisoner. They retook the spoil of about six families and that day fortnight met a company of Indians in Miller's Bottom on Kentucky River that had defeated a company of about twenty families. Whitley and he killed one Wyandot and there was another killed and one wounded. Each of these tours was about eight days. They were commanded by William Whitley.  About the middle of the summer of 1783 two men came from the head of Kentucky River and made oath that there was an Indian town there. Col's. Logan and Shelby called for volunteers. There were about 250 of whom he was one.  He served about three weeks under Capt. Joseph Kennedy.

In the fall of 1783 Capt. John Woods was ordered out by Col. Benjamin Logan to guard families through the wilderness. He served two months. In the winter of 1783 he enlisted in Lincoln County under Captain Moses Luny and went to Muscle Shoals on Tennessee River under General Rutherford or North Carolina for three months.  In the summer of 1785 he went on a tour of eight or ten days as a substitute under Captain Joseph Kennedy, ordered by Colonel Benjamin Logan of Lincoln County, Kentucky  On Spet.10, 1786 he rendezvoused at Lincoln Court House under Captain Baker Ewing of Colonel James Barnett's regiment under General George R. Clark who marched to the Wabash against the Ueaws, a tour of about six weeks, as substitute for Parker Steel.

They marched to Cincinnati and joined General Hamar and marched to the Maumee village on the Maumee where on 22 October they had a battle where they lost nearly 200 men. He was ordered out about midnight with 22 of his company. Eleven fell, three were wounded, and three up as hind riders(brought in Vincent Cushinberry). The campaign lasted about six weeks.

The United States of America was a fine place to be in the early 1800’s.  The young country promised its citizens the right to free speech, to worship as they wished, and to pursue happiness.   And it was the pursuit of happiness which much occupied the minds of the young men and women of the Clover Bottom Community of Donelson, Davidson County, Tennessee.  In 1804, thirty seven year old Anthony Clopton, left the ranks of bachelorhood behind and married into one of the wealthiest families in the area, the Hoggatts of “Clover Bottom” Farm.  Rhoda “Rhody” Hoggatt moved with ease through the glittering world of antebellum Nashville and brought to the marriage a level of sophistication not always in evidence in what was still a rough and tumble frontier.  Anthony and Rhody Clopton would live to see their neighbor and friend, Andrew Jackson, become the seventh President of the United States in 1829; Jackson’s beloved wife, Rachel, would not.  Rhody’s death would spare her the knowledge of the gruesome events waiting in store for one of her sons.  In March 1843, 176 members of an unauthorized army of Texans were captured in Mexico.  Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna refused to consider the Texans as prisoners of war, treating them instead as criminals.  Angered by an escape attempt, he first ordered the execution of all the men, but he later relented, dictating instead that only one in ten should be shot.  The men were to draw beans from a jar to determine which 17 among them would die for their alleged crimes.  William Anthony Clopton would live, but his harrowing ordeal was not to end for another year.  The horrific saga of the Mier Expedition is one of the most macabre stories in the annals of American history.  See Sewing Bees and Duels at Dawn

213             x.    America A. Perrin, born September 25, 1817 in Ky.; died July 12, 1903 in Portland,Oregon.  She married Jonathon Franklin Forbis December 13, 1836 in Lincoln County, Kentucky.

About 1843, Jonathon and America moved to Platte County,Missouri where they had a large and splendid farm and brought up their family of ten children. In 1864, they joined an Ox team, covered wagon outfit and headed for Montana, then a territory. America rode in a chair and informed folks she was to be addressed as "Madame". The 1870 census finds the Forbis family in Helena, where Jonathon died seven years later. It was said that America kept young by keeping young folks around her. The 1880 census shows her as head of a household which included not only three sons and a daughter (all in their 2o's) but an adopted Indian girl of 9 named Propen Navarro. Unfortunately, we have no further knowledge of this child. America appears in the 1893 Butte City Directory - her three sons all nearby. William, the oldest son, in mining and John F. and James W., lawyers. "Forbis and Forbis" situated in the Forbis Block at 47 E. Broadway. By the 1900 census, America is living with her son John F. and his family. According to an obituary, America had spent the winter of 1902 with her daughter, Mrs. Steele, at Helena. She went on to Spokane to visit her daughter Mrs. Brownlee and the two intended to spend the summer on the coast when she was taken ill. She was removed to Green River, Oregon and, later to Portland, where she died on July 12, 1903 at the age of 86. The eight old-timers who acted as pall bearers included a Governor and ex-Governor.

W.P. Blanks was born in what is known as the Cook Settlement, Libert Township, St. Francois County, Missouri November 29, 1838 and is the son of Zeno T. and Maria (Withers) Blanks and grandson of Shadrack and Lydia (Perrin) Blanks. The Grandparents were born, reared, and married in Louisa County, Virginia Shadrack Blanks was a farmer  by occupation. He moved from his native county after marriage and settled in Lincoln County, Kentucky where he died. His widow came to Missouri with Zeno Blanks and settled in Liberty Township. Zeno was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky near what was known as Crab Orchard. He came to Missouri with his mother, located in Liberty Township on what is known as the Crow Farm and built the present brick house that stands there, though the present owners have made an addition to it. Here the mother died, and here Mr. Zeno Blanks also passed his last days. He died in 1844. His widow survived him about 6 years. Both were members of the Christian Church.

Mr. Blanks was an old line Whig in his political preferences and had held the office of Justice of the Peace for some time. W.P. Blanks, the subject of this sketch, was reared in Liberty Township, St. Francois Co. and secured a fair education in the schools of that county. He was reared to farm life and about 1861 he engaged in mercantile pursuits at Libertyville where he continued until the fall of 1884 and then sold out. Just before the completion of the Iron Mountain Branch Road through Knob Lick he, in connection with John E. Clardy, erected a building in the last named place, and engaged in merchandising there. They afterward dissolved the partnership and Mr. Blanks was not connected with business in Knob Lick. In the fall of 1884 he removed his family to Know Lick and has ever since resided there.

He was married in DeSoto, Mo. Aug. 16, 1869 to Miss Minerva Bainbridge a native of Jonesboro,Ill., and daughter of Col. Allen and Nancy (Spiller) Bainbridge. Both parents were natives of Tenn., but later removed to DeSoto,Mo. Col. Bainbridge was engaged in milling and merchandising while in Jonesboro,Ill. He also represented his county two terms in the Legislature. After removing to DeSoto,Mo. he engaged in fruit growing and died Oct.28,1873. His wife is still living and is now residing in St. Louis.

To Mr. & Mrs Blanks were born these children: Florence E., Maria B., Arthur Withers, Mary Alice, and Anna Grace. Mr. Blanks is a member of Knob Lick Lodge No.337 AOUW and is treasurer of the same. He represented the lodge in the general convention at St. Louis in Feb.1888. He is a Democrat in his political views, and with his wife and two daughters is a member of the Christian Church, of which he is an elder.

Shadrack Blanks is appointed surveyor of the road from the Hickman road near Valentine Hermans towards the courthouse to intersect the Paint Lick road in the room of Josephus Perrin. It is ordered that he with the tithes allotted for the purpose do clear and keep the same in repair according to law.

"On a certain night in 1864 or 1865, near the close of the Civil war, a band of Tories started on  one of their tours of destruction and  killing in and near Springville, Alabama.  The first home they visited was that of Louis M. Herring, (he had married Amanda Susan Bradford, sister to John and a second cousin to James J. Bradford) which stood on the spot where the Herring Filling Station now stands (1940).  After beating Mr. Herring into an unconscious condition, these desperadoes took his boots and ring and left him, so they believed dead.  In a few days, however, Mr. Herring recovered.  The next home attacked was that of James Forman, just across the branch in Springville, Mr. Forman was on guard duty in Beaver Valley and so escaped any harm at the hands of the tormentors."  His sister, Amanda, wife of Lewis M. Herring, owned and operated the Herring Hotel in Springville.  Many people from Birmingham and Gadsden enjoyed driving to Herring Inn where they rocked on the wide porch or strolled to Springville Lake to feed the fish, then enjoyed a leisurely lunch.  The children liked to romp on the tailored lawn under the shade of the spreading elm trees.  The register contained the named of many statesmen, dignitaries, European travelers, and even movie stars.         He was the son of The Reverend Sampson Lane of Virginia and Tennessee and Mary Thomas Allen, his first cousin, who he married in Elbert County, Georgia.  The Rev. Lane was a well-educated Methodist Minister.  He owned many slaves and owned land in Elbert County, Georgia; Franklin County Alabama; Desoto County, Mississippi and western Tennessee.  The Lanes were an old Virginia family.  Thomas Lane, Francis' great-grandfather, resided with his wife Ann in Hanover, Spottsylvania and Louisa Counties.

Susanne and Francis had two children, Anthony Clopton Lane and Virginia Schylleene Lane.  While returning to Mississippi following a trip to the British West Indies where he had gone seeking restoration of his health, he died July 5, 1851.  They had been visiting relatives in Tennessee at that time and he died at "Clover Bottom Farm," the home of Susanne's uncle, Dr. James W. Hoggatt.  He was buried there with Masonic rites.

Susanne died February 4, 1854, when her children were aged 10 and 8.  She was buried at "Mayfair Place," Desoto County Mississippi.  Fortunately for the children, their father had requested in his will, dated December 28, 1850, a little over six months before his death, that Susanne's widowed sister, Agnes Watkins Morgan Clopton Moncrief "in case of extreme misfortune that my beloved wife Virginia Susanne Lane nor myself should ever return" (my sister-in-law) "shall have the bringing up and educating my children."  Agnes, the mother of three sons and the guardian of her sister's two children, married Dr. Samuel Roseborough in 1855.  Sadly, when Virginia Schylleene was 16, she died and was buried beside her mother at "Mayfair Place."
