The information contained in the following genealogy must be judged on the evidence submitted supporting each claim.  Any additional information which will add to our knowledge of this family will be gratefully accepted.

“Sweet Hall,” the ancestral home of several generation of Ruffins and their Claiborne kinsmen.  This is a view of the side of the house.  One can see that the old kitchen on the right has been incorporated into the main house.  “Sweet Hall” has obtained a Virginia Historic Landmark designation and is one of the oldest ancestral homes of the American Ruffins.  It is located on Sweet Hall Road (634 South) just outside of West Point, Virginia in King William County off Highway 30 West.  Known to be buried in the little cemetery to the right of the kitchen is Thomas Claiborne, Jr. (1703/04-1735), and his parents, Thomas Claiborne Sr. (1681-1732) and his wife, Ann Fox.  There are four tombstones remaining, but only Thomas Jr.’s can still be read.

The front of the house faces the Pamunkey River - a magnificent view!   One can image that several hundred years ago, when the land was cleared for farming that the family was able to see a huge sweep of the river in all directions.  Although marsh land has claimed much of the river at this point there is still a wide expanse of open water.  On August 13, 1781, the Marquis de Lafayette encamped his army in the area including the grounds of the plantation.  The family must have been terrified.  From this position and another near the Mattaponi River, Lafayette spied on the British army downriver at Yorktown, and prepared to block its escape routes.  Early in September, Gen. George Washington and his army arrive from the north accompanied by Rochambeau's French forces to join Lafayette and begin the siege of Yorktown.

This view of one side of the home shows the new structure which includes the once detached kitchen area.  One can see to the left of the window that a door had been bricked up.

Clopton operated a successful grist mill and was a country doctor in Putnam County, Georgia.  Sometimes he was paid in cash and sometimes in corn.  A bushel of corn equaled $1.00 in cash.  He cared for both the white families and their slaves.  He charged anywhere from $3.00 to a whopping $4.50 for a day visit and medicine, and as much as $5.00 for a nighttime consultation and medication.  A tooth could be extracted for $1.00, and a female pelvic exam fetched $6.00.  A baby was delivered for $10.00, $15.00 if the delivery proved especially difficult.  One dollar was charged for a rectal exam plus $4.00 for the visit.  Two rather fascinating entries note:  “Visit to little Mary and mule  $4.00.”  The War would come and take three of his sons to fight on distant battle fields, leaving the old doctor to wait and pray for their safe return.  See Dr. Thom

"Mama was familiar with the Bible, taught in the Sunday School  for many years, kept posted on missionaries and their activities, hoped at least one of her children would receive and accept a call of God to be a 'foreign' missionary; she was also thoroughly familiar with the history and polity of the Methodist Church and, if they had had women officers in those days, I'm confident she would have been one.  She made the Communion wine from our grapes, prepared the elements, and kept the cups and plates and cloths clean and ready for use.  Also she saw that her sons cleaned the Church regularly, including muddauber nests.  I shall always treasure the memory of her singing hymns while working.  She memorized the music and words of more hymns than anyone else I've ever known."  See Kith & Kin & Kissin' Kousins and O Worship the King.
