The information contained in the following genealogy must be judged on the evidence submitted supporting each claim.  Any additional information which will add to our knowledge of this family will be gratefully accepted

 

 

Generation No. 1

 

        1.  Elisha2 King, Sr.  (Louise1) was born August 3, 1773, and died Abt. August 7, 1855 in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia.  He married (1) Mary Abt. 1794.  She died Aft. 1796.  He married (2) Kesiah Sanders 1809 in Georgia, daughter of Mark Sanders and Nancy.  She was born February 12, 1791, and died Aft. October 1820.  He married (3) Margaret Hall Abt. 1822.  She died Bef. October 26, 1847 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, probably1.

        His brother was named Elijah.  It is very important to remember that the names "Elisha" and "Elijah" were often confused, and all references in newspapers should be viewed with this in mind and consideration must be given to exactly which brother is referred to.

 

        The January 5, 1819 issue of "Georgia Journal," page 3, carried the following notice:

 

EDUCATION - The Trustees of the Greensboro Academy, have the pleasure of announcing to the public, that the exercises of this institution, will re-commence on Monday the 6th of January next.  The male Department under the direction of MR. ELISHA KING, and the Female Department under the direction of Mrs. ANN C. SCOTT.  The attention of Mr. ARCHIBALD H. SCOTT, will be united with that of Mrs. SCOTT in the Female Department as far as his health will permit.  All the branches of education usually taught at similar institutions, will be taught in this.  The abilities of the Teachers, the discipline and order preserved in this Academy, united with the local - ?- of helath, society -?- place it on an equality at -?- with any of the surrounding Institutions.         3                ii.    Martha King.  She married Nicholas Dixon2 March 7, 1822 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia3; born Abt. 1750 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina; died 1826 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia.

 

Notes for Nicholas Dixon:

Nicholas Dixon, born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, sold his share as heir  to land owned by his father, Thomas Dixon, to Joseph Barnes of Nash County, North  Carolina.  Nicholas had migrated to Hancock County, Georgia. 

Nicholas was Justice of the Peace in the 375th District in Putnam County, Georgia from 1813 to 1817.  Putnam County adjoined Hancock County Georgia.

               I Nicholas Dixon a citizen of the state and county aforesaid being in commonly good bodily health and of sound mind and memory but knowing that appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this to be my last will or testament utterly revoking all other wills of testaments hereto fore made by me.

               1st Item.  It is my wish and desire at my death that my body be buried in a Christian like burial and my soul I   ?  to him who gave it.

                Item 2.  As to my worldly property which I may die in possession of, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Martha and to her heirs or assigns forever all property, both real and personal, of every kind and disposition that I got by her at the time of our inter- marriage.  In  ? last counting of land, negroes, horses, corn and hogs and household and kitchen furniture, I also leave with my said beloved wife Martha during her life or widowhood all that part of the land on which I now live, beginning at Lyons corner near my fence ? thence nearly and ? to a Spring near the school house thence down the   ?  to William Farr, Jr. line, including all of the tract on which I now live, north of said line which will include my  dwelling house and other out houses, and also I lend unto my beloved wife during her life or widowhood, my negro boy named Daniel about eighteen years of age.  But it is my express will and desire that from the property I have given unto my beloved wife, Martha, that all the debts that were owed at the time of our inter-marriage shall be paid and said debts not to be paid from the part of my estate.

               Item 3.  All of the balance of the tract of land on which I now live, after taking off that parcel of land I have given my wife, Martha, during her life or widowhood, I give and bequeath to be divided equally between my three sons, Hickman, Thomas, and James, or do as they think proper as I also give unto my three sons, Hickman, Thomas, and James whatsoever my beloved wife  ? on said land all the balance of the tract in which  ? lived to be divided by them or sold as they may think proper.

               Item 4.  I give and bequeath unto my son, Nathan, five dollars to be paid by my executors.

               Item 5.  I give and bequeath unto my daughter Patsy McKay the sum of five dollars to be paid by my executors.

               Item 6.  I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sara McKay the sum of five dollars to be paid by my executors.

               Item7.  I give and bequeath unto my daughter Julia Barns five dollars to be paid by my executors.

               Item 8.  I give and bequeath unto the legal heirs of my deceased daughter Elizabeth Daniels the sum of five dollars to be paid by my executors.

               Item 9.  All the balance of my estate of any kind or description it is my will and desire should be sold by my executors which they may  ?  deem most advantageous and after paying all of my just debts except those that were owing by my wife before our marriage.

               Item 10.  I give and bequeath namely, Joel, Bryant, Hickman, James, and Thomas to be equally divided between them as soon as such sale and division can take place.

               Item 11.  I request my son, Bryant Dixon and Irby (Hurly?) Hudson to be the executors of this my last will and Testament and I do hereby constitute and appoint them, the said Bryant Dickson and Irby Hudson to be my executors as aforesaid.  In return whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 28th day of March 1823.

The within will, Putnam County, of Nicholas Dixon duly proved by the oath of L. W. Hudson, Andrew Park, James Whitfield,  witnesses to the same before us 18 October 1826.

        2.  Serena3 King (Elisha2, Louise1) was born Abt. 1795 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia5,6, and died Bef. March 22, 1853 in Wilkinson County, Georgia7.  She married James William Kinney, Sr. February 23, 1819 in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia.  He was born Abt. 1785 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia8, and died Abt. 1845.

       

Children of Serena King and James Kinney are:

        16               i.    Sarah Jane4 Kinney, born October 11, 1819.  She married Benjamin Lewis

+      17              ii.    James William Kinney, Jr., born August 15, 1821; died April 19, 1898 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia and buried at Masonic Cemeter, Irwinton.

        18             iii.    George Washington Kinney, born January 10, 1823; died 1892.  He married Martha Scott April 13, 1856.

        19             iv.    John LaFayette Kinney, born December 2, 1824.  He married Sara Smith April 15, 1850.

        20              v.    Nancy Kinney, born September 10, 1826.  She married Robert I. Daniel September 15, 1853.

        21             vi.    Elijah L. Kinney, born December 3, 1828; died August 4, 1863 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He married Sara Smith April 14, 1853.

 

        13.  Elisha3 King, Jr. (Elisha2, Louise1)9 was born September 6, 1829 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia10, and died February 6, 1911 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church11.  He married Elizabeth Ann Johnston12 July 12, 1849 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia by the Rev. Boring13, daughter of Thomas Johnston and Mary Gilbert.  She was born 1824 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, and died February 26, 1901 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church14.

 

        The July 31, 1849 issue of Milledgeville's "Southern Journal" noted the marriage of Elizabeth and Elisha:

 

MARRIED:  On Thursday 12th inst., by Rev. Mr. Boring, Mr. Elisha L. King, of Hancock County, to Miss Elizabeth Johnston, daughter of Thomas Johnston, Esq., of Putnam county.

        "The world was sad, the garden was a wild,  And man, the hermit, sigh'd, till woman smiled."

+      25             iv.    Campbell T. King, Sr., born July 26, 1852 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia; died 1938 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

        26              v.    Sarah Elizabeth King, born October 3, 1861 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, baptized August 26, 1870 and joined Concord Methodist Church August 7, 1870; died August 7, 1943 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church16.  She married Henry R. Pinkerton; born Abt. 1840 in South Carolina17.

        27             vi.    Cuyler E. King, born August 31, 1865 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia; died May 9, 1940 in Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church18.

        17.  James William4 Kinney, Jr. (Serena3 King, Elisha2, Louise1) was born August 15, 182118, and died April 19, 1898 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia and buried at Masonic Cemetery, Irwinton18.  He married (1) Elizabeth Murphy March 16, 1843.    He married (2) Epsy Jane Mackey August 10, 1851 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia19, daughter of William Mackey and Sina McCranie.  She was born February 26, 1834 in Georgia20, and died June 24, 1920 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia and buried at Masonic Cemetery, Irwinton20.

       

Child of James Kinney and Elizabeth Murphy is:

        30               i.    John LaFayette5 Kinney, born June 21, 1849; died February 7, 1887 in Wilkinson County, Georgia.  He married Lula Stubbs

        32              ii.    Fannie Rebecca Kinney, born September 13, 185522; died January 20, 1897 in Mt. Nebo, Wilkinson County, Georgia and buried at Masonic Cemetery, Irwinton22.  She married Thomas A. Parker May 1, 1873 in Wilkinson County, Georgia23

        33             iii.    Siney Serena Kinney, born April 18, 1857.  She married Luther Tarpley

        34             iv.    Sarah Louise Kinney, born January 25, 1860; died May 5, 1945 in Ft. Valley, Georgia.  She married Jack Brown

        35              v.    James Riley Kinney, born November 26, 1863; died May 5, 1945 at Fort Valley, Georgia.  He married Estelle James May 28, 1890.

        36             vi.    Harriet Eulalia Kinney, born May 9, 1867; died November 23, 1934.  She married J. Ed Peavy December 5, 1895 in Georgia.

+      37            vii.    William Oscar Kinney, Sr., born August 8, 1870 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia; died December 27, 1948 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia and buried at Riverside Cemetery, Macon.

 

        24.  Mary A.4 King (Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1) was born February 25, 1851 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, and died August 23, 1891 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church24.  She married James Asbury Knight, M.D., of Eatonton, son of John Knight and Eliza Curry.  He was born June 5, 1848, and died May 10, 1906 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church24.

        25.  Campbell T.4 King, Sr. (Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1) was born July 26, 1852 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, and died 1938 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.  He married Stella Odille Hunt Abt. 1884. 

 

His obituary which appeared in the "Macon (Georgia) Telegraph and News,"  stated that he was survived by his wife and named his son, Campbell T. King, Jr. of Lynchburg, Virginia; three daughters Mrs. Ben Dasher of Macon, Mrs. Thad Horton of Atlanta, Mrs. James P. Hartness of Starkeville, Miss.  The article also listed grandchildren:  Mrs. Raymond Phelts, North Conway, NH, Ben Dasher, Jr., Campbell King Dasher, Thad Horton, Jr., Tracey Horton, Antainette (SP?)         28.  Minnie Flora4 King (Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1)26 was born January 7, 1869 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia27, and died April 10, 1942 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church28.  She married William Thomas "Boo" Clopton29 November 15, 1893 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia30, son of William Clopton and Martha Lancaster.  He was born April 25, 1863 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia31, and died September 6, 1955 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church32.

John W. Knight37.  He was born January 12, 185138, and died June 14, 1920 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church39.

        37.  William Oscar5 Kinney, Sr. (James William4, Serena3 King, Elisha2, Louise1) was born August 8, 1870 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia41, and died December 27, 1948 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia and buried at Riverside Cemetery, Macon41.  He married Clara Virginia Guerry December 4, 1895 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia42, daughter of Dupont Guerry and Fannie Davenport.  She was born December 28, 1876 in Americus, Sumpter County, Georgia43, and died February 11, 1964 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church43.

        51             iii.    William Oscar Kinney, Jr., born September 12, 1900 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.  He married Lillian Birdsey January 5, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland; born August 3, 1906 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

        52             iv.    James Davenport Kinney, born May 7, 1903 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia43; died May 13, 1903 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia and buried at Riverside Cemetery, Macon43.

        53              v.    Francis Davenport Kinney, born August 30, 1904 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.  He married (1) Mary Middlebrooks December 19, 1923 in Grey, Jones County, Georgia  He married (2) Eunice Williamgham December 1, 1954 in Barnesville, Georgia.

        54             vi.    Clara Virginia Kinney, born September 26, 1906 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.  She married (1) W. L. Stribling  She married (2) Randolf Claiborne

        38.  Thomas Pierce5 Knight (Mary A.4 King, Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1) was born February 5, 1874 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, and died October 27, 1930 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church43.  He married Carrie Lucy Holloman, daughter of William Holloman and Lucy White.  She was born June 23, 1876 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, and died June 26, 1918 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church43.

        58             iii.    Dorothy Knight44, born in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, baptized and joined Concord Methodist Church in 1926; died in Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church45.  She married Robert Clinton Smith, Sr.

        59             iv.    James A. Knight, born August 30, 1906 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, baptized and joined Concord Methodist Church September 3, 1914; died July 24, 1907 in Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church45.

        60              v.    Mildred Knight, born June 25, 1918 in Jones County, Georgia; died March 20, 1999 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery46.  She married Marshall Lynn McLeroy, Sr.; born June 23, 1909; died July 30, 1986 in Eatonton, Putnam County,  Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery47.

 

        42.  Lemuel Thomas5 Clopton (Minnie Flora4 King, Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1)48 was born January 25, 1898 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia49, and died September 5, 1977 in Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church50.  He married Nell Cowan Gilmer51 December 31, 1917 in Gainesville, Hiawassee, Georgia, by the Rev. William E. Purcell52, daughter of William Gilmer and Mary Bell.  She was born October 9, 1898 in Gillsville, Georgia53, and died March 30, 1965 in Jacksonville, Florida and buried Concord United Methodist Church54.

        44.  William King5 Clopton (Minnie Flora4 King, Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1)62 was born July 21, 1901 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia63, and died December 24, 1990 in Arcadia, Florida and buried Concord United Methodist Church, Eatonton64.  He married Ada Lucille Knight65 January 26, 1927 in Miami, Dade County, Florida, daughter of Will Knight and Annie L..  She was born September 6, 1902 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, baptized and joined Concord Methodist Church September 3, 1914, and died April 13, 1983 in Florida and buried Concord United Methodist Church, Eatonton66.

        45.  James Cuyler5 Clopton (Minnie Flora4 King, Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1)67 was born August 30, 1903 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia67, and died September 25, 1995 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia and buried Concord United Methodist Church68.  He married Petrona Gillian Hawkins69, daughter of Francis Hawkins and Mollie Key.

       

Child of James Clopton and Petrona Hawkins is:

        65               i.    Doris Dean6 Clopton, Ph.D69.  She married John Edgar Moody, M.D.

Children of Rufus Clopton and Martha Bailey are:

        66               i.    Patricia Alice6 Clopton.  She married Lloyd Bradley.

        67              ii.    Rufus Terrell Clopton, Jr., M.Ed.  He married Sheila Lynn Cash, M.Ed.

 

        47.  Frank Campbell5 Clopton, of Eatonton, Georgia (Minnie Flora4 King, Elisha3, Elisha2, Louise1)72 was born November 28, 1909 in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia72.  He married Francis Evelyn Roberts, of Eatonton, Georgia February 6, 1938 in Anderson, South Carolina72.
