Thomas inherited much of his father's estate.  And as son and heir, his social standing was greater than that of his younger brothers, so he made an "acceptable" husband to the more powerful Cloptons.  His brother, John, traveled with John Winthrop to New England.  The Doggets, Gosnolds and Winthrops, all kinsmen of the Cloptons,  intermarried.  A list of the original settlers of Jamestown written by Captain John Smyth, records the names of three Gosnolds, including their Captain, Bartholomew Gosnold.  See Brief Communion.

Children of Dorothy Bacon and Anthony Gosnold are:

31               i.    Anthony5 Gosnold, II, of Clopton, died January 7, 1608/09 in Jamestown, Virginia.

It is believed Anthony, unlike his brother, Bartholomew, was not a participant in the first landing.  He arrived on one of the supply ships which landed in January and April of 1609.  On January 7, 1608, ten men, including Anthony, were drowned in the James River,  when a storm capsized the small skiff in which they were riding.  "The Three Worlds of Captain John Smith," Philip L. Trained as a lawyer, he attended Cambridge University, and studied law at Middle Temple.  He did not find law very stimulating, and became interested in the talk of exploring the "New World."  His first trip was with Sir Walter Raleigh, in the unsuccessful attempt to found a colony in Virginia.   In 1602 he explored the northern coast and named on area "Cape Cod."  On December 19, 1606, as the Captain of the "God Speed," he became part of the first colonists of Jamestown.
