This is a collection of "notes" which was given to me some time ago. There are 52 pages of information on various Clendenin families and individuals. I am going to copy them here . Please understand that this information is not necessarily documented. Use it as a starting point.

This information was compiled and collected by the following individuals: Mrs. Roger M. Johnson, Mrs. Howard E. Johnson, Mrs. Melba McCaskill, and Mrs. Ann Riley and provided to me by Marilyn Schuelzky of Ft. Wayne, IN. Marilyn and David McGraw were instrumental in my locating my connection to the Clendenins.

Scotch Method of Naming Children

The Scotch system of naming children which was often followed although not always strictly adhered to was to have the first male child named after the paternal grandfather, the second male child named after the maternal grandfather and the third male after the father. Likewise the first female child was named after the maternal grandmother, the second female child after the paternal grandmother and the third female child after the mother ... 1760s Augusta Co. VA. Birth of sons Isaac and Robert and daughters Mary who married Abner Hamilton, son of John Hamilton, 17 Oct 1785 in Montgomery Co. and lived Barren Co., KY and Alice who married Ferdinand Hamilton 3 May 1792 in Greenbrier Co.

1769 Botetourt Co. formed from Augusta.

1774 29 May. Rich Creek [a branch of New River not far from Grey Sulphur Springs], VA. Letter from Michael Woods to Col. William Preston ... "there is in that Bounds from Rich Creek Mountain to where the County Line strikes the river thirty men which is: Joseph English, Wm Cliften, Andr Woods, James Williams, [A]dam Clendinen, Henry Walker, [A]dam Woods, [R]ichd Woods, Henry Atkins, Charlas Atkins, Michl Woods, Samuel Camble, Wm Cavanough Senr., Squire Gatleph, John Umphries, Richard Herd, John Nicklas, George Scott, George Sobe, [Fr]ancis Rowan, {Pe]ter Dingos, Robert Wiley Senr., Robert Wiley Junr, Thos Wiley, Thos Haket, Samuel Astle, Ishamll Babit, Wm Lesey, Henry Oharron, Jeremiah Cary. 1776 Botetourt Co., VA Statement 1841 by Robt. Poague, b 1780 [see history of the Poage family in Kentucky Ancestors Vol 17, No. 2 Oct 1981, p 86 "Robert Poage 1700-1774, great-uncle of depondent, md c 1722 Eliabeth Preston ... Robert Poage was one of the founders of the Augusta Stone Meeting House.] About 65 years ago my father William Poague removed to then Greenbrier [actually Botetourt], afterwards Bath, now Pocahontas. About 12 families settled there together, in Clendennins' fort of whom were 2 Clendennins, a McNeill, 2 Kinnisons, an Edmonson, Johnson, Gilliland, Hughes, and my father.... My unce John Poage, son of John P., lived on the old place and belonged to the old Stone meeting-house. Draper Mss. CC13 p. 214.

1777 Oct 7. Montgomery County. The County debtor to Michell Clay for one Hogg praised to 1.10s for use of part of Capt. Taylor's company of Militia stationed at Wood's Fort on Rich Creek in Montgomery County. Signed: Adam Clendonen & Wm Purdew.
