Samuel Boyd was born in Missouri, February 28, 1848, and at the age of eleven years came to Texas with his parents. His father, George W. Boyd, a native of Kentucky, married Elizabeth Hamlin, moved to Missouri and thence to Texas. The father of Elizabeth Hamlin was John Hamlin, of Kentucky, and the children borne by her were named Mary A., Samuel, Judah, John, Elizabeth and George W. Samuel Boyd was quite small when he was brought to Texas. Here he has grown to manhood and has married into one of the oldest and most highly respected families in this county. He chose for his bride Miss Cassina Delura S. Weldon, daughter of Thomas J. Weldon, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. To this happy union have been born five children, named as follows: Joseph R., Alice E., Edmond W., Robert L. and Thomas F. Mr. Boyd was, of course, quite a boy when the Civil War broke out, but nevertheless he served in the Confederate army as guard and did some camp duty. The father of Mr. Boyd died in 1862, in the war time; the mother of our subject lived until 1883. It was February 5, 1871, when Mr. Boyd married, but in the meantime, between his return from the war and the date of his marriage, he had recuperated the broken fortunes of his family by his own industry and exertions, and now owns a good farm, on which he raises mixed crops.
