James W. Boyd ~ Fannie C. Oden  - Texas

James W. Boyd, the leading merchant of Gilmer, Texas, is a native of Upshur county, born November 19, 1855, a son of Captain Walter Boyd, a prominent citizen of Gilmer, whose sketch appears in this work.   James W. was reared to the life of a merchant,  clerking in his father's store, and since reaching manhood has engaged in business for himself.   He now has the largest store in town, and also has a branch house at Gatesville, Coryell county, Texas, under the name of Boyd & Rogers.  Mr. Rogers having charge of the branch store.   At one time Mr. Boyd was interested in two stores at Waco, but the profits not being large enough to satisfy him, he sold his interest, and now gives his attention to his business in Gilmer and Gatesville,  he having the management of the store at Gilmer.   Mr. Boyd is a man of fine business ability, and has been successful, and, although a young man, is recognized as one of the leading citizens of Gilmer.  February 14, 1872,  he married Fannie C. Oden,  daughter of Elias Oden,  and they have six children:  Charles W.,  James Hardy,  Arthur B.,  Addie M. M.,  Roy and Bessie.  He is a member of the Knights of Honor.  Mrs. Boyd is a member of the Missionary Baptist church, and is an active worker in all that pertains to the welfare of the church and the Sunday school.   She is beloved by all who know her for her deeds of charity and benevolence.
