About Our Family

My name is Carol Hepburn and I am married and the mom of one very special child.  My husband, David,  and I have been married for 22 years.  We have one son, DJ, who will be 14 in September, 2007.  We have lived in the Phoenix metropolitan area since 1996 and run our own Advertising and Marketing business.  David has been in advertising/marketing and sales  for over 25 years and currently leads several Mastermind Roundtable groups (for business professionals) as well as facilitates Sales training Seminars.  I work part-time as a website designer and provide administrative support for our business.  Our son loves computers and works part-time helping me with computer-related issues (hosting, design and maintenance) as well as working with his dad on special projects.

We have three cats, Zachary (age 18); Winston (named after Mr. Churchill - age 10 months); and Gus (Asparagus, age 6 months).    Our favorite past-times include reading, traveling, and spending time together.  We are blessed to live near our parents and to be able to spend time with them.  My parents retired to Arizona in 2000 and David's parents came here in 1994.  We are active in our church, Scottsdale Bible, and I have served in AWANA for the past 10 years.

About David

David's educational background is in English and Psychology and Sports Education.  David loves books and as a result we have a very large library in our home.  David loves learning and spends a great deal of time in personal and professional study.  He is an avid reader and reads from several newspapers and online journals each day.  I rarely lose him -- usually he is in the office reading online or sitting some place quiet reading a book.  He loves politics and likes to debate with others and is one of those quiet guys who listens well and knows "everything."  He loves sports of all kinds, but especially enjoys basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer.  He is patient and kind and never says a harsh or critical word -- he listens well and is slow to speak and weighs decisions very carefully.  He is a diligent and faithful man, careful in his study time and habits.  I am truly blessed to have married such a great guy.  He is my exact opposite and is everything I am not -- truly-- he completes me.   David loves to take notes  and has journals and books of notes everywhere in our office.  He reads so many books each year that I never can see the floor or the table near his desk (they are covered with all his books and papers)!  He works hard to continue to educate himself (personally and professionally) and is a strong supporter of our home schooling efforts.

About Carol

My educational background is in Graphic Art and Commercial design.  I studied fine art in college and later graduated with a B.A. in Humanities/European Studies and a minor emphasis in English Literature.  I am a visual-spatial learner (VSL) and while I enjoy reading for knowledge, I am not what you would call an avid reader.  I have learned discipline from my husband and have learned to read for pleasure.  During college  I fell in love with the classics, especially the study of history, literature and philosophy.   I still love art but most of my creative energy goes into web design now.  Since we started home schooling in 2004, my love of reading the "great books" has been rekindled and I have made the decision to continue to educate myself.   I am currently moderator of the Areté Classical Study Group and am reading through Charlotte Mason's Original Home Schooling Series.    I moderate the AOForGiftedKids support group and the MEP-Homeschoolers support group (for users of the MEP math curriculum).  I maintain this website for my family tree and home schooling as well as my online journal/blog, The Country Cottage.

 About DJ

My son is a visual-spatial learner as well and it has proved challenging to home school him.  He is highly gifted and as such he learns new concepts very quickly.  However, he doesn't always retain information  so I have to find creative ways to enhance his understanding of anything that is not presented visually.  DJ's loves music and is a gifted pianist.  He loves the piano and practices for over an hour each day (without prompting).  He also has studied violin (briefly) and has written several pieces of music for piano and violin (recently performed in a recital).  He is teaching himself guitar and would really like an electric guitar with an amplifier (his Dad says not right now).  He also loves foreign language and is studying four languages:  Latin, Spanish, German and French this year.  His personal preference is French but he says he finds Latin very enjoyable too.  In addition to music and foreign language, DJ loves computers.  He is interested in 3-D animation, Game design, and has studied HTML, JavaScript, Java, Unix, DOS, Visual Basic and most recently Binary code.  He is working towards receiving his General Class License (Amateur Radio) and is an Airman in the Civil Air Patrol (U.S. Air Force Auxiliary).  He serves weekly in the Tech Ministry at Scottsdale Bible Church and is active in the Sr. High Youth program.
