LEWISTOWN — William J. Bainter, 56, of 8 Great Oak Lane died at 10:30
p.m. Tuesday Jan. 28, 1997, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born March 2, 1940, in Lewistown to Cecil L. and Margaret E. Krider Bainter,
he married Patricia "Pat" ELAM on Jan. 1, 1960, in Lewistown. She survives.
He also is survived by two sons, William J. "Jeff" of Canton and Jerry
L. of Peoria; one daughter, Mrs. Dale (Rhonda) Miller of Inkon, Idaho;
two grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one
brother, Robert L. of Quincy; and two sisters, Mrs. Dean (Nancy) Thompson
and Mrs. Rossie (Joan) Heffren, both of Lewistown. He was a conductor with
the Burlington Northern Railroad for the past 35 years. He was a Marine
Corps veteran and a member of Lewistown VFW Post 5001. Services will be
at 11 a.m. Saturday at Henry Memorial Home in Lewistown. The Rev. John
Sims will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the
memorial home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown. Memorials

AGED CADDO WOMAN DIES THURSDAY NIGHT
Matilda Ann Bray, a resident of Bryan County for 34 years, died at
her home in Caddo Thursday night at the age of 87 years. She had been ill
two months.
Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ in Caddo Saturday
afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. M.D. Hartley officiating. Burial under
direction of Gus Pool and Son, will be in Gethsemane cemetery.
The deceased was born in Cannon County, Tenn., Feb. 15, 1854. She was
married in 1877 to C.N. Bray in Sharp county, Ark. The family moved from
Arkansas to East Texas and came to Bryan county 34 years ago. Her husband,
a retired farmer, survives her. She was a life-long member of the Church
of Christ.
Other survivors are two sons, T.T. Bray, near Matoy, R.B. Bray, Marshall,
Texas, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Smith, Caddo, one brother, J.M. ELAM, Cartwright,
and Mrs. Cordelia Wyatt, Cartwright.
Matthew Chris Bullard, 20, Fishers, Ind., formerly of this area, died Dec. 26, 1993, in Kansas City. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Southside Christian Center Assembly of God Church; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery. DAY, CARL "POP" A resident of Greensburg, he was a lifelong cattleman
and farmer. He died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional

of Tinus. He retired as parish supervisor with the Louisiana Office of
Highways with 18 years of service. Upon graduation from Oakland High School,
he was awarded a basketball scholarship to the University of Mississippi.

DREW SR., JUDGE R. HARMON Died Monday evening, Dec. 18, 1995, at his
residence in Minden after a lengthy illness. He was 78, born Feb. 5, 1917,
in Minden. He was a fourth generation judge descended from pioneer north
Louisiana families. He was admitted to practice law in 1941, served as
city attorney of Minden and assistant district attorney of the 26th Judicial
District (Bossier and Webster parishes.) He was elected to three terms
on the Democratic State Central Committee, two terms as city judge of Minden
and two terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He was elected
and served as the delegate representing Webster Parish at the Louisiana
Constitutional Convention of 1973. He was a sergeant with the 13th Air
Force Service Command and served in the Southwest Pacific Theater during
World War II. Visiting was held at Roseneath Funeral Home, Minden, 4 to
6 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial services at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
conducted by the Rev. T.W. Barnes and the Rev. William R. Bryant. Burial

High School in 1933, attended Kemper Military Institute, Louisiana Tech
and LSU Law School. He was a charter member of the Minden Jaycees, charter
member and past president of Minden Civitans, past post commander of the
VFW, member of the American Legion and past president of Minden Riding
Club. In 1976, he was named alumnus of the year from Sigma Nu Fraternity
at Louisiana Tech. In 1977, he was honored as Minden's Man of the Year.
He spent 41 years assisting those recovering from alcoholism. He was a
Presbyterian. Memorial donations may be made to Minden's Alpha House, or
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Mr. Elam, 76, died of cancer Tuesday morning in his Sacramento home.
The New York state native moved to Sacramento with his parents 70 years
ago and was a graduate of Courtland High School. He later joined Sacramento
Wheel Service and worked 45 years as a mechanic before retiring in the
early 1980s. Mr. Elam is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ellen; children,
Glenn Ellen "Kay" Armstrong, Jo Anne Webb, Barbara Mary Elam and Donald
Norman Elam, all of Sacramento, and Dorothy Lynn Fineren of Healdsburg;
a sister, Agnes Ensley, and a brother, Jabez Elam, both of Sacramento;
six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the

Albert O. ELAM, 89, of Beechwood Health Care Center in Pekin, formerly
of 312 S. Saratoga St., Peoria, died at 11:54 a.m. Thursday, June 24, 1993,
at Pekin Hospital. Born Jan. 10, 1904, in Blanchard to James Mack and Nellie
Jenkins ELAM, he married Etta M. Simmons on June 7, 1927, in Vienna. She
survives in Pekin. Also surviving are four sons, Leslie of Huntsville,
Ark., Romie and Jim, both of Washington, and Kenneth, formerly of Creve
Coeur; one sister, Wilma Hart of Waterford, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren. Two sisters and four brothers preceded him in
death. He was a machinist at Caterpillar Inc., retiring in 1953. He later
was a minister in the Southern Baptist church. He was a member of Laramie
Street Baptist Church in Peoria. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m.
Saturday at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria. The Rev. Bill Williams will officiate.

Funeral services for Allen Elam, 77, Rt. 3, Corinth, were held Sunday,
Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Lone Oak Baptist Church. Officiating were the
Revs. Hardy West and Lester Spencer. Interment was in the Lone Oak Cemetery.
Coleman Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Mr. Elam died at 5:30
a.m., Sept. 26, at St. Joseph's hospital in Memphis. He had been ill for
about two weeks. He was born in Alcorn County and was a member of the Baptist
Church. Mr. Elam was a former elected bailiff and a deputy sheriff in Alcorn
County. He was a retired sawmiller and farmer.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lillian Potts Elam, Corinth; four sons, David
Elam, Bobby Elam, Kenneth Elam and Russell Elam all of Corinth; five daughters,
Mrs. Carolyn Kiddy and Mrs. Wanda Nash both of Corinth; Mrs. Hatties Wilhite,
Mrs. Lottie Warren and Mrs. Vernice Drewry all of Memphis,
Tennessee; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Studdard, Corinth; 14 grandchildren
and six great grandchildren.
Allen Ray Elam, 70, of Chandler, Okla., died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999.
He was a native of the Piney Community, son of the late William Richard
and Mary Lynn Harless
Elam, served in the U. S. Army where he was a cannoneer with the artillery,
and was preceded in
death by two sisters, Dora Mae Wurst and Luise Horten.

Oaks Medical Center, Hammond. He was 66, a native of St. Charles, Va.,
and a resident of Springfield. He was a retired Hammond Motors manager.

He was president of Tangipahoa Parish Shriner's Club, member of a Masonic

Donald R. Elam, age 61, of Hamilton died on Saturday, February 19,
2000 at his residence. He was born on January 3, 1939 in Middletown, Ohio,
the son of Arthur and Ella (Watson) Elam. He served in the United States
Army from 1960 to 1964. He was married on October 16, 1975 in Covington,
Kentucky to Glenda Sizemore who survives him. He worked for 30 years at
Diamond International until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of
the Vineyard Church of Franklin.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Elam; two sons, Mark Christopher
and his wife Amy Elamon of Franklin, Ohio and Donald Ray and wife Nicole
Elam, Jr. of Middletown, Ohio; two brothers, Sam Elam and Danny Elam both
of Middletown, Ohio; a sister, Ruby Whitman of Middletown, Ohio; grandchildren,
Emily Elizabeth, Allison Amber, Caroline Christen, Nathaniel Dale and Savannah
Paige Elam; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by his parents, three brothers, James Elam, Russell Elam and Jeffrey Elam.

She was born Dec. 9, 1926 in Wamack, Illinois to Louis Owen and Ruth Eva

back to Okla. City in 1975. She was a bookkeeper for Ed Grier V.W. She
was of the Episcopal faith. She was a loving, outgoing person with many
friends. She will be missed and always remembered as a people person. She

Edith L. Elam, sister of Carol Lankutis of Litchfield, died Thursday,
August 13, 1998, in Kenosha Hospital and Medical Center, Kenosha, Wis.
She was 69 years old on April 9. Mrs. Elam, of Pleasant Prairie, Wis.,
had resided in the Kenosha area since 1948. She was an active member of
the Knosha First Baptist Church and a volunteer at the Kenosha Animal Shelter.
Her hobbies included traveling to most of the 50 states and snowmobiling.
She was born in Litchfield, a daughter of Robert W. and Amelia Smith Watkins,
and attended schools here. She married Donald R. Elam on October 20, 1945,
in Litchfield. He survives. Surviving also are sons, Ronald G. Elam of
Pleasant Prairie, Rodney G. Elam of Kenosha;
a brother, William of Mississippi and two other sisters, Dorothy Cancio
of Bakersfield, Calif., and Mary Tigner of Bolivia, Tenn. Services were
held in Kenosha with burial in Sunset Ridge Cemetery. Bruch Funeral Home

Memorial services for F. Leland "Lee" Elam, 82, a retired free-lance
writer and photographer for national agricultural journals and a former
publicity director for the State Fair and local county fairs, will be at

Mr. Elam, who died Wednesday in a local convalescent hospital, worked as
a free-lance journalist for 56 years. He also served as a staff photographer
and writer for The Sacramento Bee in the 1940s and was an editor and writer
for Big Farmer and Dairyman magazines. Mr. Elam served as publicity director
for the Dixon and Sacramento county fairs during the late 1950s and '60s
and was supervisor of publicity and public relations for the California
State Fair and Exposition in the mid-1960s. A lifelong Sacramento County
resident, he was born and raised in Elk Grove, where he attended Elk Grove
High School. He was a member of the California Writers Club. Mr. Elam is
survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret; children, Richard G. Elam of
Fort Bragg, Barbara J. Day of Woodland and Dorothy M. Zehr of Manchester,
Iowa; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
SAN DIEGO - Fern (Elam) Arnold, 74, of San Diego, formerly of Winfield, died June 26, 1999, in San Diego. Her body was donated to the University of Southern California Medical School. Arnold was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Thayer. She lived and attended school in Winfield. Her husband, Percy Arnold, preceded her in death. Medical Center in Peoria. Born Sept. 4, 1920, in Peoria to Ferris E. and
Clara E. Federmeyer ELAM, he married Lillian Chaney on Feb. 4, 1946, in
Peoria. She died Oct. 14, 1988, in Barron, Wis. One brother and one sister
also preceded him in death. Surviving are four sons, Ferris E. of Fort
Walton Beach, Jackie L. of East Peoria, Charles E. of Bartonville and John

city force for 12 years and was a veteran of World War II. Funeral services

HIS HONOUR HENRY ELAM, who has died aged 89, was one of London's most
senior criminal judges. Henry Elam was born in London on Nov 29, 1903,
and educated at Charterhouse and Lincoln College, Oxford. He was called
to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1927, and in early years worked indefatigably
on the Western Circuit. In 1937, he was appointed one of the youngest junior
prosecuting counsel at the Old Bailey, and during the Second World War
served as deputy judge advocate in the RAF. Afterwards he worked his way
up the hierarchy of prosecutors, becoming second senior prosecuting counsel
in 1950. Unlike most full-time prosecutors, he occasionally appeared for
the defence - notably in 1952, when he acted for John Thomas Straffen,
the strangler of children who had escaped from Broadmoor to kill again.
When Straffen was found guilty as a sane man, Elam successfully battled
behind the scenes to persuade the Home Secretary to grant a As a barrister,
Elam took immense pains to teach his pupils the arts of advocacy. When
he was elevated to the bench no fewer than 27 of his former pupils turned
up to the party in his honour. Elam also sat as a part-time judge from
1946, as Recorder successively at Poole and Exeter, and then as deputy
chairman of West Kent Quarter Sessions. It came as no surprise when, in
1953, he was appointed a permanent judge as deputy chairman of the London
Sessions - a post which was translated into a circuit judgeship by the
1971 Courts Act. "He was never arrogant," a court clerk who used to sit
with Elam recalled. "He would always make a point of explaining his reason
for a sentence, and he was particularly kind with the accused's family
if they gave evidence in mitigation of guilt." After retiring in 1976,
Elam devoted more time to his beloved fly fishing; and as age took its
toll on his legs he had to use a specially designed boat. He also relished
his role as secretary of Our Society, a dining club for lawyers, doctors,
writers and actors, where lawyers speak off the record about their more
sensational cases. Henry Elam married first, in 1930, Eunice Matthews,
who died in 1975; they had a daughter. He married secondly, in 1975, Doris
Horsford. Fenton Bresler writes: Henry Elam was the finest example of a
criminal judge of the old school. He was courteous yet never, like so many
of the present generation, bland. There was never any doubt in whose courtroom
one found oneself at London Sessions (later Inner London Crown Court),
in its courthouse near Elephant and Castle. Well over six feet tall, Elam
possessed a strikingly individual voice, which, with its drawn-out vowels,
was often affectionately imitated in the barristers' robing room. He could
be stern in his sentencing when necessary, but obviously preferred, whenever
possible, to be compassionate. He was tolerant of human frailties. I remember
one case where I had (rightly) persuaded a client to admit his guilt in
a case on Elam's list, confident that Elam would put him on probation -
but then the case was switched to the court of another, less humane judge,
and the man was sent to prison for an unwarranted 21 months. Elam's charm
was that of a bygone era. He once interrupted a trial to tell the jury
he had just received a note that Ann Jones had won Wimbledon. He was a
human being on the Bench.

the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife of 10 years,

JESSIE DENVER ELAM, 86, of Clinton, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at
his home. Mr. Elam owned and operated Armstrong Floor Covering in Clinton
for 20 years. Earlier, he had worked as a knitter at Magnet Mills for 26
years. He was born Jan. 17, 1914, in Barbourville, Ky., the son of
David and Alice Poff Elam. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War
II. He is survived by his
brother, Barney Elam of Dallas, Texas; two sisters, Mary Blanton of
Ohio and Bonnie King of Baughman, Ky.; his brother-in-law, Terry Webber
Sr. and his wife, Mary, of Clinton; his sister-in-law, Jean Curnutt and
her husband, Troy, of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews. His wife,
Zelma Lee Webber Elam, and several brothers and sisters died earlier. A

VFW Post 8228, lifetime member of Chase City Chamber of Commerce, citizen
of the year 1996, member of American Gem Society and Watchmakers Guild,
past president and lifetime director of Arrowhead Gun
Club and a certified N.R.A. fire arms instructor. He was a World War
II veteran, retired as Lt. Colonel. He served as mayor for the town of
Chase City from 1965 to 1974. He was owner and operator of Elam’s Jewelry
for 54 years and was a member of First Baptist Church. The family
will receive friends at Newcomb Allgood Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday,
April 5 from 7 to

of Bushnell, died at 2:15 a.m.Saturday, June 25, 1994, at Macomb Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 4, 1899, near Adair to James and
Mary Walters Litchfield, she married Albert ELAM on Jan. 30, 1926. He died
Feb. 25, 1982. One sister and seven brothers also preceded her in death.

MONTIE M. ELAM, age 88, of Monticello, Kentucky passed away Sunday,
April 2, 2000 at his home. He was born on November 7, 1911, the son of
Granville and Sara Elizabeth Hurt Elam. Both parents preceded him in death.
On July 16, 1932, he married Lexie Cooper Elam, who survives.
He is also survived by 2 sons Bobby Elam of Monticello, Kentucky and
Carl Elam of Pendleton, Indiana; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren;
4 great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceding him in death are 6 brothers Menville, Walter, R. N., Elmer, Guy
and Edison. He had accepted Christ as his Savior and was a faithful
member of the Elk Spring Valley Baptist Church, where he served his
Lord as Trustee, and was a member of Monticello, Lodge $431 and the Monticello
Order of the Eastern Star #526. Funeral services were held Wednesday,
April 5, 2000 in the funeral home chapel with Brother Stan Stevenson and
Brother Albert McKinney officiating. Burial was in the Elk Spring
Cemetery.

Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1993, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Born
Dec. 2, 1903, in Los Gatos, Calif., to Royal Bryent and Clara LaVerna White
Moore, she married William Calvin ELAM on Dec. 23, 1929, in Los Gatos.
He died Jan. 27, 1970, in Bartonville. One son, William Calvin Jr., and
one sister also preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Roy of Peoria
and Jerry of Washington; one daughter, Mrs. David (Clara) Hale of Mackinaw;
one brother, Stanley E. Moore of Fort Bragg, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Edward
(Esther) Carper of Baltimore; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild. She worked for Peoria State Hospital for
18 years, retiring in 1974 as the supervisor of mental health. She was
a member of Illinois State Retirees Club, Neighborhood House and Friendship
House. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Remmert Funeral Home in East
Peoria. The Rev. Delores Henry will officiate. Visitation will be from
6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Bay Cemetery

PATRICIA ELAM HAYDEN, age 59, of Monticello, Kentucky passed away Sunday,
March 19, 2000 at her home. She was born in Wayne County, Kentucky
on May 16, 1940, the daughter of
Earl Elam and Lizzie Watson Elam. Both parents preceded her in
death. On June 7, 1960, she married Bob Hayden, who survives.
She is also survived by 2 children Robert Allen Hayden of
Columbus, Indiana and Pamela Hayden Dalton of Monticello, Kentucky;
2 brothers Billy J. Elam of Montpelier, Indiana and David E. Elam of Monticello,
Kentucky; 4 grandchildren. She was employed by the Wayne County Board
of Education for 33 years before retiring. She was a member of the
First Christian Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March
21, 2000 at 2 P.M. at the funeral home chapel with Brother Mel Gresham

after two days critical and several months declining health. The funeral
will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, conducted

the church cemetery. Mrs. ELAM was born May 9, 1907, in Montgomery County,
to William Stevenson and Florence Bell Stevenson. She was a lifetime member
of Laurel Hill Baptist Church, where she had served as Sunday school teacher,
a member of the choir, and active in the W.M.U. organization of the church.
She was a member of Star Chapter 311 Order of the Eastern Star, and was

retired employee of Scotland Mills. She was married to Haward Mack ELAM,
who died Feb. 22, 1988. Surviving are her sons, Hoyle Mack ELAM of Candor,
and W. Ray ELAM of Southern Pines; daughters, Mrs. Rachel ELAM Kenion and
Mrs. Betty Jean ELAM Harris, both of Candor; brother, W. Doyle Stevenson

of Phoenix and Mrs. T.M. (Pauline) Arbogast of Canton. She worked at International
Harvester and Hiram Walker in Peoria before moving to Phoenix in 1956.
She then worked for the Arizona State Land Department and later worked
as a linage analyst for the Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette. Services
will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary, Phoenix.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in
Canton. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Phoenix.

Diane Elam Fovargue, a chief cardiology nurse who worked with patients
at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla for years, died Thursday at her home in Olympia,
Wash. She was 40 and had moved to Washington state from San Diego two years
ago. A native of Indianapolis, she graduated from Indiana University in
1975 with a bachelor's degree in nursing. She moved here in 1976 to assume
a post as chief cardiology nurse at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, a position
she held for 15 years. After returning to her husband's hometown in 1991,
Mrs. Fovargue worked as a nurse at The Pain Clinic of Capital Medical Center
in Olympia. Survivors include her husband, Jonathon; a daughter, Anne Katherine,
7; a son, Chase Jonathon, 4; her mother, Barbara Elam of Encinitas; and
a sister, Darlene Daley of Milford, Mass. A memorial service will be held
at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fovargue home in Olympia. Remains are to be cremated
and ashes will be buried at sea.

Frankie Sue Marshall. Surviving are his mother, Susan Justice of Peoria;

him in death. He worked at Shottofers Auto Parts and Siegs Auto Parts,

died early Thursday morning in Davie County Hospital. The funeral will

health several years and critically ill since May 5.
She was born in Scott County, Va., Dec. 28, 1903, the daughter of Samuel
and Laura Elam Nickels. She married George Lundy Aug. 11, 1923, and he
survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Douglas of Bedford and George Jr., of
Pontiac, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. James (Jeanette) McCoy of Lakeside,
Calif., and Mrs. Roger (Mary Lou) Mark of Poway, Fla., and six grandchildren.
Five brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church of McRoberts, Ky.,
and Pine Mountain Chapter 247, Order of Eastern Star, at Jenkens, Ky.

1923, in Danville to Fred Andrew and Lola Jane Elam Miller, she married
Fred H. Madden Jr. on Nov. 29, 1941, in Crystal City, Mo. He survives.
Also surviving are three sons, John and Joe, both of Washington, and Larry
of Wilmington, N.C.; one daughter, Patricia Lykins of Washington; nine
grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Three brothers, one granddaughter
and two great-grandsons preceded her in death. She was a precinct election
judge in Washington for many years. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday

Miller was born Nov. 28, 1961, in Beloit, to the Rev. Lyle and Jean Miller.
He was educated in Beloit before graduating from Winfield High School.
Miller had been employed by Sherrard Construction Co., Felts Oil Co. and
Range Oil Co., all of Winfield, and Skyline Mobile
Home Corp. in Arkansas City. He began employment with Rubbermaid in 1985
and had served the company nearly 14 years as a warehouseman. On
April 15, 1983, he married Kathy Elam at Tisdale. They lived in Winfield
before moving to Burden in 1986. A member of Tisdale United Methodist
Church, he was also affiliated with the Winfield Saddle Club and the National
Rifle
Association. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Miller, a son, Jacob Miller,
and a daughter, Jessica Miller, all of Burden; his parents, Lyle and Jean
Miller, Woodston; his brothers, David Miller, Winfield, and Jim Miller,
Newkirk, Okla.; and a sister, Beth Duncan, Brownburg, Ind.

FAIRVIEW — Leonard F. Overcash, 82, of Rural Route 1 died at 10:37
p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 1994, at Graham Hospital in Canton. Born Oct. 31,
1911, in Fairview to Harry Raymond and Frances May ELAM Overcash, he married
Reta B. Kennedy on Oct. 18, 1937, in Kentland, Ind. She survives. Also
surviving are four sons, Ronald of Sparland, Lynn of Havana, Leslie of
Moline and Richard of Cedar Park, Texas; two daughters, Jennifer West of
Canton and Janette Overcash of Fairview; two half brothers, Kenneth Rockhold
of Peoria and Clyde Rockhold of Pekin; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
One brother and one half brother preceded him in death. He was a tool and
die maker at Caterpillar Inc., retiring in 1975 after 40 years. He was
a founding member of the Spoon River Chapter of the Sons an Daughters of
the Pilgrims, and was a member of Illinois Sons of the American Revolution.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in

Mrs. Lydia M. RAY, wife of Alex RAY of Mulberry Grove, and a half sister of J.S. TAYLOR of this city, passed away at her home in Mulberry Grove at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, 2 Jan 1941 Mrs. RAY had been in failing health for several years, and had been confined to her bed for the past four months. Death was due to general senility and obstruction of the bowels. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. today, at the Mulberry Grove Methodist church, the Rev. J.L. MILLER, the pastor, officiating. Interment was made at the Mulberry Grove cemetery. Mrs. RAY's maiden name was Lydia Margaret TAYLOR, and she was born in Pleasant Mount township March 25, 1853, and was aged 87 years, nine months, and six days. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John TAYLOR. She was married in 1866 to Joseph ELAM, and surviving this union is one son, Walter ELAM of Mulberry Grove. Mr. ELAM passed away many years ago. On August 31, 1886, Mrs. ELAM was married to W.A. RAY, and he, with one daughter, Mrs. Mattie PALMER of Evansville, Ind., survives. One son, Edgar, died several years ago. She is also survived by two half brothers, Mr. TAYLOR of this city, and Winslow TAYLOR of Pleasant Mount township, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. RAY observed their golden wedding anniversary Aug. 31, 1926. [sic] She was a member of the Methodist church of Mulberry Grove, where they had lived since 1902.

Alex RAY, formerly of Mulberry Grove, who died at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, 7 Sep 1941, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mattie PALMER at Evansville, Ind., as noted in the Advocate Monday, were conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mulberry Grove Methodist church, the Rev. He was married to Mrs. Lydia TAYLOR ELAM, at Vandalia August 31, 1886 and 38 years ago they moved to Bond county and had lived in the vicinity of Mulberry Grove until the death of his wife when he went to live with his daughter. He is survived by the daughter mentioned, one stepson, Walter ELAM of Mulberry Grove, one brother, William RAY of Warm Springs, Ark., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. COLCHESTER — Keith William Rigg, 69, of Fandon died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday,
Dec. 10, 1992, at his home. Born Nov. 17, 1923, in Chalmers Township, McDonough
County, to George and Dora Black Rigg, he married Shirley ELAM on Oct.
20, 1945, in Anniston, Ala. She survives. Also surviving are two sons,
Craig E. of Colchester and Curt A. of Bushnell; one daughter, Camilla R.
Mercier of Mound, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Elbert C.,
and one sister, Mrs. Joe (Hazel) Bown, both of Macomb. He was preceded
in death by three brothers. He was an auctioneer for 48 years, worked at
N.T.N. Bower for 19 years and farmed. He was a member and elder of Fandon
Christian Church. He was a member of the Note Seekers Quartet and a World
War II Army veteran. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jones Mortuary.
The Rev. Lee Unger will officiate. Calling hours will be after 8 a.m. today
at the mortuary. There will be no family visitation. Burial will be in
Bethel Cemetery in rural Colchester. Memorials may be made to Bethel Cemetery.

SCANLAN, Donald Earl, passed away Sept. 30, 1996. He was born Sept.
29, 1940 in Dallas, Tx. to Hewey & Mary (ELAM) Scanlan McDaniel. He
graduated from Capitol Hill H.S. in 1960. He was married to Jeralie (Davis)
Scanlan for 21 years. He worked for Scott Chevrolet 1960-75. Don was an
avid sportsman and loved fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents
& stepfather, Clyde McDaniel. He is survived by 3 brothers, Jack Scanlan,
San Antonio, Tx, Bob Scanlan, Blanchard, Ok, & Jimmy McDaniel, Springtown,
Tx; stepbrother, Leroy McDaniel of MWC; stepsister, Alberta Goble of Guthrie;
his 2 children, Karen Mason, Santee, Ca. & David Scanlan & wife,
Rhonda of OKC; 3 grandchildren, Rachel Mason, David Mason & Lacey Scanlan.
Don will be missed dearly by all who loved him. A special thanks to all
who expressed their love and kindness at our time of grief. Don donated
his body to the University of Okla. Health Science Center to help others.

RALEIGH - James Dow Sheppard, Jr., 58, formerly of Shelby, NC died
Monday, February 1, 1999 at Rex Hospital. The son of Grace Shytle Sheppard
and the late James Dow Sheppard, Sr., he was born October 13, 1940 in Greensboro,
NC. Jim, as he was known to friends, graduated from Shelby High School
in 1958 after which he attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill where he studied Journalism. During his career he worked for the Raleigh
News and Observer and the High Point Enterprise and was Managing Editor
of three North Carolina newspapers; The Lincoln Times in Lincolnton, the
Courier-Sun in Rutherfordton and the McDowell News in Marion. He also worked
as an Assignment Editor at WRAL-TV in Raleigh and was a Public Inform tion
Officer for the State of North Carolina. Surviving are his wife, Martha
Elam Sheppard; daughter, Kelly Ann Sheppard; son, Jason Dow Sheppard; mother,
Grace Sheppard; and sister, Mary Ellen Sheppard. A graveside service will
be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at Oakwood Cemetery. The
family will receive friends at their home at 5412 Parkwood Dr. Memorial

PEORIA -- Gladys Merle Simmons, 94, of Hillsboro, the mother of a Peoria
woman, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996, at Montgomery Health Care
Center in Taylor Springs. Born Feb. 17, 1902, in Woburn to Stephen and
Julia ELAM Bone, she married Alva Esta Simmons on Dec. 24, 1921, in Greenville.
He died in 1976. She also was preceded in death by three brothers and three
sisters. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Victor (Jewel) Post of Peoria,
Annabelle Robertson of Mount Olive and Marjorie Bunton of Henderson, Nev.;
one son, Earl of Chula Vista, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
one brother, Steven ELAM of Brownsville, Texas; and two sisters, Nina Wehrle
of Mulberry Grove and Lela Harvey of Harlingen, Texas. Services will be
at noon Friday at Patton Memorial Home in Hillsboro, where visitation will
be one hour before services. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in Mulberry
Grove. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsboro or
any charity.

SPEARS Anna L. (Leemhuis), 87 of OKC, passed away March 20, 1992. She
was born October 16, 1904 in Germany to Jacob Leemhuis and Lena Rueben.
Her family settled in Hobart, OK. Anna met her husband A.M. Spears Sr.
and traveled to many different areas of Oklahoma, of which they came to
settle in OKC in 1945 and have remained here since. She was preceded in
death by her husband on August 13, 1964. Anna was a loving and devoted
person not only to all of her family but also to the numerous friends that
came to know her. She is survived by her children, Alonzo M. Spears Jr.
of OKC, Leunah M. Beatty of OKC, Juanita M. Harris of Sterling, OK, Jane
S. Barnes of Peoria, IL, Judy S. Elam of Yukon, OK, Cynthia L. Hess of

45 years. Mrs. Spradling was a daughter of the late Joel & Mary White

Dr. R. H. Spradling and since that time they have lived at Lexington and
Lincoln, Nebraska.
She is survived by her husband and two sons, Frank and Clarence and

HIDDENITE - Mrs. Willie ELAM Summers, 76, died Sunday at Iredell Memorial
Hospital. The funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Hiddenite
United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donnie Durham and the Rev. Wade
Wright officiating. The body will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes
prior to the funeral, and burial will follow in Iredell Memorial Gardens.
The family will assemble at the residence of the deceased and will receive
friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville.

CONSTANCE TIPPER, who has died aged 101, conducted pioneering research
into metal crystals which enabled her to work out why the hulls of Liberty
ships were splitting in two during the Second World War. Her research laid
the foundations for crucial developments in ship, aircraft, jet engine
and bridge design. A surgeon's daughter, Constance Fligg Elam was born
at New Barnet on Feb 16 1894. She was one of the first graduates of Newnham
College, Cambridge, where she read Natural Sciences. She went on to work
at the National Physical Laboratory and the Royal School of Mines, and
completed a doctorate at London University. In 1921 she and Harold Carpenter
had produced one of the first methods for converting large pieces of a
metal into single crystals. Five years later she and Geoffrey Taylor exploited
this breakthrough to determine the crystallographic characteristics of
the plastic deformation of aluminium. This was the dawn of the science
of the ductility and strength of metals. Her book The Distortion of Metal
Crystals (1935) opened up this new subject. In 1928 she married G H Tipper,
a superintendent of the Indian Geological Survey, and two years later was
elected a Fellow of Newnham. She was later lecturer and reader in engineering
at the university. During the Second World War, she worked with J F Baker
for the Admiralty, which had run into difficulties in its method of constructing
merchant ships. To speed up construction, the hulls of the vessels were
all-welded rather than riveted; in some craft, particularly Liberty ships,
the hulls were splitting in cold, rough seas. The Admiralty was mystified
by the phenomenon - it was as if the metal had turned into glass. Constance
Tipper developed the "Tipper Test" to determine the vulnerability of steel.
By studying the structures of the cracks with a microscope, she uncovered
many of the underlying processes in the crystal grains of the metal. She
established that to prevent fracture, a steel should be chosen which did
not become brittle until cooled well below service temperatures. In 1962
she published The Brittle Fracture Story, which contains many insights
that are still important today. Her husband died in 1947. In 1960 she retired
from Cambridge, and moved to Langwathby, Cumbria, where she lived with
her brother and spent many happy hours fly-fishing on the rivers Eden and
Eamont. Constance Tipper also gardened, painted and played the piano and
organ.

Jane TRUMAN was born April 13, 1810, 2 1/2 miles East of
Springvalley, and died December 27, 1894 at her home adjoining Springvalley
where she has lived since 1828, in which year she was married to Jeffry
TRUMAN, his death occured January 1, 1857. She was the mother of 13 children.
5 sons and 8 daughters of whom 3 sons and 3 daughters are living. She was
the last of 5 brothers and 5 sisters, of the family of Josiah and Sarah
A. ELAM. Her father was born in Culpepper County, Virginia in 1753. He
was a soldier in the War of the Revolution, after which he removed to Kentucky
where he was married to Sarah A. PORTER. Being greatly harrased by Indians,
numbers of their neighbors being slain and others carried into captivity,
mostly by the Miami Tribes, he with others engaged in several expeditions
against the savages of the Miami Valley. He was a Captain of a Kentucky
Company which was with General St. Clair. While on one of these expeditions
he
selected 1000 acres of land on Caesarcreek and in the year 1802 moved
his family to it., and on this farm Jane TRUMAN was born. She grew up in
the Baptist faith, her mother and father being active members of the Missionary
Baptist Church, but she often expressed herself being a believer in the
doctrines as taught by the Friends, although she never became a member
of any church, she was a woman of strong will power and strict integrity,
and if she ever wronged anyone it was
unintentional on her part. So well has she done her part in this world,
that in her death, she had no fears of the next. Interment today ( Saturday
) in the family cemetery near the place of her
birth.

Ruth "Gerry" Vessel, 76, Sarasota, died Sept. 23, 1998. She was born
Dec. 15, 1921, in Decatur, Ala., and came to Sarasota 38 years ago from
Alabama. She was a retired seamstress. She was a member of Veterans of
Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 3233. She was a Baptist. Survivors include
her husband, Ed; three daughters, Patricia Spott and Jackie Rosier, both
of Sarasota, and Rhonda Henry of Dillsboro, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Lori
Hotaling of Houston and Sara Brisbley of Tampa; three sons, Earl Penn of
Moore, S.C., Jon ELAM of Naples and Wayne ELAM of Sarasota; a stepson,
Dennis of Sarasota; a sister, Laura Blevins of Decatur; two brothers, James
Worley and Earl Worley Jr., both of Decatur; and many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Monday at Palms Funeral Home. The service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at
the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Palms Memorial Park. Memorial donations

CUBA -- June Wells, 75, of Clayberg Nursing Home died at 7:25 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 23, 1995, at the nursing home. Born May 30, 1920, in Fairview
to Stephen ELAM and Pearl M. Maseker ELAM, she married Delbert F. Wells
on May 27, 1939, in Palmyra, Mo. He died June 17, 1978. She also was preceded
in death by two brothers and one sister. Surviving are one brother, Robert
of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. She was a retired manager of
Montgomery Ward. She was a member of Shields Chapel United Methodist Church
and Canton Moose Lodge No. 784. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at

EAST PEORIA — Ruth V. Widdows, 69, of 113 S. Gardena Ave. died at 9
a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 1995, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born Aug. 10, 1926, in Matthews, Mo., to Cletis and Mary ELAM Winders,
she married Ralph Widdows on Oct. 17, 1941, in East Prairie, Mo. He survives.
Surviving are two sons, Larry of East Peoria and Jack of Immokalee, Fla.;
two daughters, Brenda Meinrich of Peoria and Kathy Adams of East Peoria;
one sister, Marie Evans of St. Louis; two brothers, Virgil Winders of Dallas
and Dan Winders of East Peoria; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Three brothers preceded her in death. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday
at Schmidt-Haller Funeral Parlors. The Rev. Linda Foreman will officiate.
