SURNAME VARIANTS

The CCFHA would like your help to further identify and collect details about the many variant spellings encountered in the various lines. Your help is needed. Please submit any additions or amplifying details to Gale Corson: [email protected]

The listings below are from a brief survey of some of the more common sources.  Our goal is to expand these listings with more about which line, group or individual it was associated; the time period and relative frequency that it is encountered; and the source(s) where it is found.

Toward that goal the list will eventually be categorized:

  • Major variants - Large lines or family groups found using this name; also other spellings with multiple sources and/or commonly found.
  • Minor variants - Misspellings*; small groups or single individuals; rare occurrences.
  • *Misspellings, it might be noted, may in some cases not have been the fault of the writer, but may have resulted from the incorrect interpretation of early handwriting styles and/or faded or illegible copy.
