My great x 2 grandparents came to Townsend Township, Huron, Ohio in early 1860 from Shelburne, Chittenden, Vermont. Samuel S. NELSON was a merchant and the 1860 census records "dry goods store". He died in June of 1874 aged 53 years. I have his record of death. Are there archival pictures of his store ? Perhaps a newspaper ad ? An obituary for him ? His wife, Sarah Yates (DEERE) NELSON [1822-1908], survived him by 34 years and I have her death record and several obituaries. I have pictures of their graves and wonder if there might be other pictures depicting their life in Ohio.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I checked our Huron County, Ohio reference books, plus Ancestry.com, for your Samuel S. NELSON but, unfortunately, have little to add to what you already reported. I did find the following in our Atlases for 1873 and 1891: In the 1873 Atlas, page 75, S.S. NELSON is shown as owning lots 46, 47, and 48 in Collins, Towsend Twp. The house is shown plotted on lot 46 facing Division Lane at the intersection with Section Line Rd. There is a brief business directory on the same page but it doesn't list Samuel in the dry goods business. In the Atlas of 1891 I find S.V. (possibly Y) NELSON, presumed widow of Samuel S., as owning lots 45, 46, and 47, but not lot 48, in Collins, Townsend Twp. Lot 46 is shown, as before, at the intersection of Division St. and Section Line Rd but the scale is small and doesn't show house locations. I checked our Picturesque Huron County, Ohio, 1896 publication, but could not find the NELSON house included in its pictures of homes. Perhaps you could ask this mail list if anyone in the area could check to see if the lot 46 NELSON home is still standing, and if it is, take a picture to send to you.

I need a qualified researcher to search for info on my ancestors in Ohio and Grandfather Charles Gregory SUTTON b. July 1838 or 30 possibly in Greenwich or Huron county. His Texas Heavy Artillery Confederate papers, military pension records and census indicate he was from Ohio. He may have been orphaned around year 1850, but not positive. He died in Old Confederates Home in Sweet Home/Little Rock, AR in 1922. Other SUTTON clans say his parents were Henry & Lucinda or Laurinda Sacket SUTTON but I have been unable to find any official records.

A couple of years ago Mr. Henry Timman assisted me in obtaining copies of courthouse land records [grantor/grantee] of my NELSONs. Of interest here: 1. In January, 1859, Samuel purchased Lot # 46 and the south half of Lot # 47 from George and Martha Jacoby 2. In March 1880, widow Sarah sold Lot # 48 to J.H. Humphrey. 3. In August, 1909, the heirs of Sarah Y. NELSON sold Lots # 46 and # 47 to Ella E. FINNEY. These other names may ring someones bell. Perhaps, as you suggest, someone living in Collins today might offer to take a picture if anything still exists. I will contact the library for a copy of Huron County Atlas 1873, page 75. Perhaps there is a circa 1860-1890 map of Townsend Township.

My WELLS ancestors relocated from their birth locations in the New England states to Ohio around 1825. I would like to communicate with anyone researching or related to the WELLS who lived in the area. My James WELLS brought his family from Windsor Co., VT but the children were also born in NY. Unfortunately, prior to them arriving in OH I have only found one proof document for the family ... that is James' marriage to Persis EARLE in VT in Dec 1810. He and his wife were both born in 1792. I found her birth record but have not been able to find his or any of the children not born in Ohio. Since this has been a problem, I have been unable to locate any siblings and/or his parents. Both he and Persis were buried in Norwalk in 1870 and 1865, respectively. James did take off and left his family from before the 1850 census until after his wife died. I have no idea where he was or whom he was with. There are so many James born c 1792 it is a problem. It does not help when records state he was either born in NH or CT. Since I don't know James' parents, brothers, sisters ... I would like to communicate with any and all Ohio WELLS descendants and/or researchers to see if there may be a connection.. Either that, or James was beamed down from an alien space craft... :o)
