Is there a list of people who lived in Huron County, Ohio, and served in the War of 1812 or received a War of 1812 pension? Virgil White's Index to War of 1812 Pension Files lists application number WO-3087 filed by Mary VANSCOY, widow of Abraham for his service as a private under Captain Isaac Waterburg. I am wondering whether this Abraham and Mary VANSCOY are my great(3)-grandpaents who lived in Huron County. I have not been able to find Captain Waterburg in the War of 1812 on the web, so I don't know from what state he served. "My" Abraham VAN SCOY was born in August 1788 in Westchester County, New York. He married Mary KNAPP, daughter of Brundage KNAPP and his 1st (of 5) wife Lydia BISHOP. Their first six children (Sally, Lidda, Mary, Selon, Helon, Priscilla) were born in New York between 1812 and 1820. Their next three children (George, Alice, Abraham) were born in Geauga County, Ohio, between 1822 and 1827. Their next child (Abigail Hariet) was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania in 1830. Their remaining children (Bishop, another Helon, Hannah) were born in Huron County, Ohio, between 1833 and 1839. Abraham died in 1849 (and is listed in the 1850 mortality schedule). Mary is listed in Greenwich Township, Huron County, each census year 1850-1880. She died in January 1883. Both of them are buried in the Nineveh Cemetery in southeastern Greenwich Township. National Archives charges $50 for a copy of a pension file; I'm reluctant to spend that much money unless I'm fairly confident that it is for my ancestors! Any advice? P.S. A database at Ancestry.com says that the National Archives Index to the Compiled Military Service Records for the Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812 has an entry for Brundage KNAPP, 2 Regiment Artillery, U. S. Volunteers. I think this was a New York regiment. Mary (KNAPP) VAN SCOY's father was Brundage KNAPP. He was born in Massachusetts or New York about 1773. He supposedly married five times, to Lydia/Lidda BISHOP, Sally TYLER, Esther MEAD, Elizabeth MEAD (sister of Esther), and Betsey HAINES. He came to Huron County around 1825-1828. There are at least six men named Brundage KNAPP whose lives overlapped, but I think I've identified "my" Brundage in these census records- 1820 Somers, Westchester County, New York; 1830 Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio; 1850 Bronson Township, Huron County, Ohio; 1860 Fairfield Township, Huron County, Ohio. A brief obituary for him was published in the Norwalk Reflector 17 April 1866. The War of 1812 service record might be for him, or it might be for the Brundage KNAPP who was born about 1797 and appears in the census records for North Salem, Westchester County, New York, for 1820, 1830, 1850, and 1860. I believe the Nicholas Knapp genealogy and supplements confuse these men. So, I have a similar question about him- did the Brundage KNAPP who served in the War of 1812 ever live in Huron County?

Gloria, Thanks for the hint. I think it's a better hint than you realized! This evening after reading your message I reviewed some old notes of mine on Abraham VAN SCOY. Four years ago while searching Ancestry.com at a library I found this entry-- War of 1812 Service Records Record about ABRAHAM VANSEAY. Name- ABRAHAM VANSEAY. Company- 1 REG'T (VAN BEUREN'S), NEW YORK MIL. Rank - Induction: PRIVATE. Rank - Discharge: PRIVATE. Roll Box: 215. Roll Exct: 602. At the time I rejected this as a record for my great(3)-grandfather but "Vanseay" could be "Vanscoy" and the regiment name and number match what you found for Captain Waterbury. (That old handwriting can be tricky. A while back I was helping a friend with her DAR application and was looking for a census record for John Stewart, wife Martha, and daughter Piety. I knew the county and state for the particular year. I searched first for Piety Stewart. Nothing. Then I searched for John Stewart. Nothing. Then I looked for Martha Stewart and found the family. "John" had been transcribed as "Jolon" and "Piety" as "Puty"!) So, thanks again. Your suggestion has likely led to information on how to find the service record as well as the pension record.

Does anyone know if there is a collection of photos of the early Clarksfield, Huron County Pioneers? People, places, events, etc. Specifically seeking photos that may include Stephen Ransom DAY, his family, siblings, etc.

Gloria Ishida Look Up Results - Googling, I found this on an ancestral site of a family in Westchester County- War of 1812, as part of Capt. Isaac Waterbury's company in Van Buren's First regiment, N.Y. Militia. I think this is what you were looking for. "G" mistakenly read in the original for "y". This may also help on the Brundage KNAPP - Westchester.

Are there any early photos of people from Bellevue? Looking for a photo of Abram LEITER, the first mayor of Bellevue. He died in 1885. Is there a listing of War of 1812 soldiers buried in Huron Co? Recently I was sent a photo of John MILLER's tombstone in Bellevue Cemetery with an 1812 marker and flag. John MILLER was the father-in-law of Abraham LEITER but I have no idea where in PA John MILLER came from.

Alice Duncan Look Up Results-- In "History of the Firelands, comprising Huron and Erie Counties ,Ohio" Abraham LEITER is listed on pages 392, 396, 397, 399, 400. John MILLER has many listings, 19 or more, there was probably more than one John MILLER.

Gloria Ishida Look Up Results-- Sometimes speculation gives hints. Maybe this will help. Abraham (Abram) LEITER is listed in Bellevue censuses (York Township, Sandusky County - (the south of Main Street) as born in Pennsylvania, as is his wife Mary (except in the census, probably an error. This I think you know as you also mentioned John MILLER being born in Pennsylvania. That name is so common that it does present a difficulty. A fair number of people who lived in this area of Bellevue and also farther south in Thompson Township, Seneca County (including some of my ancestors) were from the same area in Pennsylvania (associated with the Evangelical Association, a German offshoot of Methodism). In looking at the 1820 census there are only two LEITERs in Pennsylvania; I would choose John LEITER, who by children's ages listed could be the father of Abram, He is in Union County, where some of my Bellevue Pennsylvanians came from, or surrounding counties, Centre, Northumberland and Snyder. Now it is not necessarily a given but it wouldn't surprise me if your John MILLER came from the same area and would have served in the War of 1812 from one of those counties. I have had actual pension information on my ggg grandfather's, Jacob Strayer, service but just now ! googled and found the same information http://www.archive.org/stream/musterrollsofpen01egle/musterrollsofpen01egle_djvu.txt If you go to "find" and put in MILLER, John, you will find 34 references, but if you type "Strayer" Jacob (private)will come up and in his company t(scroll up) there is a John MILLER (no rank given), Could be yours, but this is merely speculation based on the York and Thompson Township connections. Jacob himself never came to Ohio, but his wife and sons did. Also, have you checked his daughter's obituary, available at Hayes? This may give her exact birthplace.

Thank you, Gloria. Mary MILLER LEITER's obit says she was born in Millerstown. There are two, at that point in time. You are probably right about the same 1812 unit as Jacob Strayer. I still would like a bit more information about that service and would love to have a photo of Abram LEITER!

Attn. Ken Shute- While using your "Online Index to the Plat Book of ca 1845, Huron County, Ohio" on the county's U.S. GenWeb page, I noticed that you offered to still do look ups in the Atlas of 1891. Would you please tell me if Albert DAVIS is listed in this atlas? Would he be listed if he was a renter, or would only the owner of the land be listed?

Ken Shute Look Up Results - It looks like the Plat Book of ca 1845 and the Atlases of 1873 and 1891 documented just the land owners, not any renters. The Commentary preceding the Plat Book of ca 1845 contains the following: "This work was primarily a land plot record, and the maps indicate land owners and acreage...It is presumed that the maps are accurate as to names of owners and acreage, but any questions can be answered by reference to the tax records in the County Auditor's Office and the land records in the County's Recorder's Office." I did not find the name of Albert DAVIS in the Atlas of 1891. I did find someone who could be his father (William B. DAVIS) who owned a plot of land in New Haven Township, Section 1, lot 103, 14 acres in the Atlases of 1873 and 1891. It was listed under the owner's name of "Wm. DAVIS." In the Plat Book of ca 1845, this same plot was shown as owned by one "A. Skinner."
