I am researching my BACKENSTO relatives and find in the Mansfield News that the ladies are mentioned in connection with the Epworth Society. Can anyone fill me in on what that was or is? The BACKENSTOs and the UHRICHs/UHLRICHs traveled together from Dauphin Co. PA and settled in Richland Co with some intermarriages along the way. Can anyone tell me where Uhrichsville is located, perhaps in or near Richland Co. and any history about that is appreciated as well. I found this entry in Beers- Joseph UHRICH (deceased), was one of Tuscarawas County's successful farmers and stock-raisers, and was born in Uhrichsville May 9. 1827. He was a son of Jacob and Anna Maria (DEMUTH) UHRICH, of Dutch descent. The former was a native of Pennsylvania, born August 2, 1783, and with his family emigrated to Ohio in 1804. The latter was also born in Pennsylvania in 1796, and was the mother of ten children. viz., Rosanna, wife of George ROSS, of Harrison County, Ohio; Polly (Mary), wife of John WELSH. of Uhrichsville; George; Benjamin, married to Dina SORTER, of Ohio; Susanna, married to Simon P. BLICKENSDERFER, of Tuscarawas County; Jacob, married to Rosanna C. KNAUS, of Tuscarawas County; John; Nancy, wife of Joseph WALLACE; Joseph, our subject; and Caroline, married to John T. HAUSER, of North Carolina. The subject of this sketch died January 22, 1877, in Mill Township, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. He was the owner, at the time of his decease, of forty-seven acres of valuable land in the corporation of Uhrichsville, and a fine farm in Mill Township, all of which he had accumulated during his life and bequeathed to his family at his death. He was reared on a farm, and followed farming more or less up to the time of his death. He was joined in marriage, May 21, 1850, with Miss Kate A., daughter of Joseph and Nancy WALTON, of Tuscarawas County, and of English descent. To Mr. and Mrs. UHRICH were born eight children, viz., Rosanna C., born June 29, 1851, wife of Nelson SPRAUL, a partner ;in the limekiln works, of Mill Township; Emmet W., born January 1, 1853; Benjamin W., born August 13, 1855, married to Elizabeth, a daughter of William JOHNSON, Mayor of Uhrichsville and ex-Representative of Tuscarawas County; Carrie, born March 1, 1858: Charles W. and Clarence F. (deceased), twins, born March 2, 1861; Edward P., born July 20, 1863, and Frank, born February 4, 1869. Emmet W., the oldest son, was employed as Assistant Cashier in the Farmers' & Merchants' Bank of Uhrichsville in 1872, and remained there six years. He then engaged in manufacturing, and also dealt in fine horses, he having a practical eye for thorough breeds. In 1882, he was elected Cashier of the Farmers' and Merchants' National Bank of Uhrichsville, which position he still occupies. He is considered a trustworthy young gentleman. Mr. UHRICH, our subject, was a strong Republican. He stood very high in the estimation of the people of Uhrichsville, who deeply deplored his loss. He gained a host of friends by his honesty and integrity in business.

Jessie Deith Look Up Results - Uhrichsville, Ohio seems to be in Tuscarawas county, Ohio. It was named after a Michael UHRICH, a settler who built a mill there. I also searched for Uhlrichsville, but that produced nothing. The Epworth Society seems to be a group of people in England working to improve their town and its immediate area. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was from Epworth. Perhaps there was a spin-off in your Ohio town that was connected to the Methodist Church. This is just a starting place. Were they Methodists? Perhaps a query to the Methodist church in Mansfield would help. Also try doing a Google search to expand on this.

Sadly, I don't have collateral lines info. On the few that I know married - I have so little on due to their coming here from Ireland so recently. Their children and grandchildren I find in the census, but do not know maiden names of wives yet. Based on Cemetery Index records, Patric MOCKLER b. Mar 1848 md to Mary (Unknown maiden). Based on the census they md about 1862 Ireland then they immigrated 1873 and were natrualized 1878 based on census reporting. The only children that I know are Thomas b. Nov 1871 Ireland - md Mary A. (maiden name unknown) b. 18874 Ireland d. 1944. They had children John, Joseph P. and Mary W. - don't have any further info on who they md - and find in 1920 and 1930 census. Patric's next child was John Joseph - my husband's line. He md Mary Agnes NOLAN b. 2 Sep 1882 Ireland d/o Patrick NOLAN and Bridgett or Anna 1879-1962 - they had William P. d. at age 22, Mary Katherine b. 1913 and d. at birth, John J. b. 29 May 1915 d. 18 Nov 1971-Never md. John Joseph's next - Francis "Frank" Joseph b. 7 Mar 1918 in Wakeman - my husband's grandfather -he md Eleanor June CLARK who was b. in Pittsburgh PA - not sure how they met, but he was a shoe salesman and travelled. John Joseph's next child Thomas Joseph MOCKLER - I have the md person, but she's still living and in OH. Finally Patric's 3rd is one Anna or Ann b. Jun 1877 in Wakeman - I only find her in the 1900 census - then she probably md, but I don't know to whom. There is a Patric MOCKLER listed as a Godparent for a person in NY - I can't find this info currently either. Godparents to Martin WALDRON are Patric MOCKLER and Katie WALDRON. This Patric was b. in 1848. I suspect that Patric didn't come here alone - and suspect that he had a brother named John b. 1851 d. 1938 and bur in St. Mary's Catholic Cem, Wakeman. He was md to a Catherine "Katie" (Unknown maiden) b. 1845 in Ireland d. 1917 and bur same. I see them in the 1880 census in Wakeman.

In 1832, James DALY came to Ohio and lived in Florence, Huron County. In December of 1842 he made his last will and testament, and was living in Pittsfield, Lorain County at this time. He died in 1843. There is a John DALEY and Moses DALEY in the 1830 US Census. Both of these men and their "large" families lived in Florence. I'm assuming that is why my GRUn, James chose to come to OH. A John DAILY served as a witness to James' will, which leads me to believe there was a family connection between these Dalys. If anyone has any info they can share with me, I'd appreciate it. I've noticed in the archives that the DALEY name appears several times, but not with too much info. Please don't let the alternate spellings bother you...even James' DALY is spelled 4 different ways in this Will.

Platt FISH, son of Lidda Ann VAN SCOY and her husband John FISH was born in 1835, probably in Huron County, Ohio. In 1860 he was with his parents and some siblings in Ridgefield Township, Huron County, Ohio. In 1870 and 1880 he was with his wife Arianda and 3 children in Ridgefield Township, Huron County, Ohio. But, in the census records of 1870 and 1880, all three of their children (Mattie b abt 1863, Ona b 1864, Ida b 1864) are listed as having been born in Oregon. Do you know of other people from Huron County who went to Oregon in the 1860s and where they went?

The name PLATT - a surname from the CT group that went to the Firelands? I had PLATT name connected to STARRs. Are you sure the Oregon births were supposed to be Ohio? How clear was it?

I have read in several old books including Old Keys about the indian mounds in the area of Clear Creek Twp and the Village of Savannah. Does anyone have an idea of the current day location of these? Originally a good sized mound was on the SPROTT farm in the early 1880s. The book Old Keys says that the mound is very large like a rolling hill and if you stand on top of it you can see the valleys in all directions. It is on the register of historic places. I guess at one time there were a fair amount of mounds and some of the old books tell stories about how the plow turned over the remains of the natives. Some recount stories of reburials of the remains. If anyone has a plat map of that area around Clear Creek and Savannah perhaps they could look up the SPROTT name.

I have a marriage Cert. for A. J. CARSSOLE and Hannah PARRATT or PARROTT that married on 29th of June 1853 in Huron County, Ohio at the Church of Christ. Anyone know where this church and their records are? In the Huron County Index for marriage they have the husband listed as A.J. CARPOLE. I really don't believe this is the right surname. Is there anyone out there researching this family?

Jessie Deith Look Up Results - I have a sideways ancestor (the brother of a direct ancestor) who was a minister at the Christian Church. It is also sometimes called just the Ripley Church and was located on South Edwards road, in Ripley. All that is left of it is the old cemetery called the Christian Church cemetery or the Houfstater cemetery. J.P. HOUFSTATER donated the land for the cemetery and probably for the church. He was the son-in-law of Orson CARPENTER who was my sideways ancestor. In Orson's obituary it says "He was converted about 1840, and soon thereafter was ordained a minister in the Christian church and was faithful to his calling for about forty-five years. In his early ministry he traveled his extensive circuit on horseback, sometimes being absent for three weeks on a single trip." The Huron County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society has a small book (pamphlet?) for sale - $5 - that has a bit about the church in it. It's vol.9 - 1990 I believe, but check with them on that. I believe I have a photo copy of the same article. It is an abstract copied by Rev. J.L. McCorison, Jr., of Haverhill, Mass. in 1931. It says the church was organized Feb. 15,1840 with nine members - Z.S. VAIL, Michael FOLLMER, Keziah ROBINSON, Sally M. VAIL, Lydia MALORY, Barbary FOLLMER, Giteann (Gideon) ROBINSON, Caterine HOOVER, and Fanny FOLLMER. I do not see either CARSSOLE or PARRATT anywhere in the article. The last of the burials in the church yard seem to be in the 1850's, so it must have disbanded not much after your relative's marriage there. 1/29/07 Correction: I erred on the address of the old Christian Church. I relied on a pencil notation rather then going to my original source. Now I have. I have a photocopy of a partial page from a 1873 atlas showing Ripley Township. It is a lovely map, showing names of property owners and building locations. The Christian church is shown to be on the same road as the cemetery but a little to its east. That would be the northwest corner of the road intersection. It also shows a school as being across the north/south road and just slightly south. Another partial atlas page, this time 1891, shows the land still belonging to J.P. HOUFSTATTER, and still shows the cemetery, but the church is gone. Neither map shows the street names, but I defer to LaVonne Ayres who as a native to the area gives us the location as being the north side of Silliman Road.

LaVonne Ayres Look Up Results - The Houfstater Cemetery is on the north side of Silliman Rd. between New State Rd. and Townline 111 on the southwest side of Ripley Twp. There is a church on Edward's Rd., just south of US 224. That church is directly beside Edward's Grove Cemetery and there is also a church near Delphi. I think both churches have used Ripley in their names. There is also the Barre Farm Cemetery on Edward's Rd. in the first block north of US 224. I have heard there was a church near it, but if so, it's been gone for quite some time. I have some of my oldest ancestors buried at Houfstater Cemetery, with more of the others at Edward's Grove, and none that I know of buried at the Barre Farm Cemetery. I am curious to where the church to Houfstater actually was. It would have to be a couple of country blocks to the cemetery. I may have connections to the HOUFSTATERs also.
