I am interested in corresponding with descendants of Abraham and Lucy SHERMAN GIFFORD. My purpose is three-fold- 1) to verify information collected to date, 2) to identify other primary and secondary sources on these ancestral lines, and 3) where desirable and practical, to collaborate on future research. Abraham (1776-1858) was a son of Joseph GIFFORD (Joseph, Gershom, William, William) and Hannah WINSLOW. Lucy SHERMAN (1779-1823) was a daughter of John and Experience O'KILLEA/KILLEY/KELLEY SHERMAN. Abraham and Lucy married 22 August 1799 at New Bedford, and by September 1800, they had moved with their infant son, Joseph, to eastern NY. Society of Friends' removal certificates track this family from New Bedford to Nine Partners to Chatham-Hudson to Easton to Troy and finally to Eden monthly meeting. In the 1810 federal census, Abraham GIFFORD was found at Pittstown in Rensselaer Co., NY (as was his brother Rufus, who was married to Lucy's sister, Ruth). By the fall of 1813, Abraham, Lucy and their seven children (also Rufus and family) had resettled in the area called Concord in Niagara County, that was later known as Collins, Erie County, NY. Children of this couple were- 1. Joseph A. (1800-1863) m. Sylvia JENNEY d/o John JENNEY (Benjamin, Cornelius, Lettice, Samuel, John) and Catherine DAVIS. Joseph, Sylvia and children moved to Huron Co., Ohio about 1828, returning to Erie Co., NY in 1829, then back to Huron Co. in the fall of 1830. The family also lived for a time in Williams Co., Ohio. 2. John Sherman (1801-1883) m. 1st. Phebe CHIDESTER; 2nd. Hannah THOMPSON HOWLAND. He moved from Erie Co., to Scipio, Cayuga Co., NY, about 1823; then to Perry, NY in 1833, and by 1840, was in Calhoun Co., Michigan in Pennfield Twp. 3. Deborah (1803-1890) m. John? HUSTIN (HUSTEN or HUSTON). Deborah can be found in Huron Co., Ohio in 1850 census and probably moved to Michigan when daughter and family relocated there. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Elsie Village, Clinton County. 4. Humphrey (1805-1882) m. Jane JENNEY (sister of Sylvia). Humphrey arrived in Huron Co., Ohio by 1829; acquired first property there 31 March 1830. 5. Abraham (1808-1878) m. Maritta BLACKMORE. Abraham was in Huron Co., Ohio by April 1831. 6. Giles Gifford (1810-1890) m. Annis REYNOLDS, remained in Erie Co., NY. 7. Micajah (1812-1894?) m. Esther REYNOLDS, relocated to Huron Co., Ohio in January 1840, then Calhoun Co., Michigan (1850), Barry Co., Michigan (1860) and by 1870, in Iowa. 8. Edward (1814-1888) m. Almira SALISBURY (niece of Sylvia and Jane Jenney). He relocated to Huron Co., Ohio by 1837. 9. Sarah (1816-after 1 June 1880) m. Eli BARNEY. They left Erie Co., NY about 1855, and resettled in Huron Co., Ohio. 10. Lucy (1818-?) 11, Hannah (1820-?) 12. Sophia, died young 13. Elizabeth, died young Note- the last two children are included in an early removal certificate (1804) but are not mentioned in subsequent certificates or a transcribed Bible record.

The VanScoy-Knapp reunion began in 1907 as an organization of descendants of the Van Scoy and Knapp families who at least passed through Huron County in the early to mid 19th century. There are four male ancestors involved- Brundage KNAPP, 1773-1866, Abraham VAN SCOY, 1788-1849, husband of Brundage Knapp's daughter Mary 1795-1883, Cornelius Van Scoy, 1800-1884, first cousin of Abraham Van Scoy, James Van Scoy, 1807-1860. We're in touch with living descendants of three of these men, but have not been able to find any grandchildren for James. In his 1980s 3 volume work "Descendants of Cornelis Aertsen Van Schaick." Melwood Van Scoyoc wrote "James was a farmer in Yates County, New York. The family moved to Huron County, Ohio in the 1850's. After James died in May 1860, Sarah and daughter Charlotte became Tailors. George, Simmons and William were engaged in farming." James and his family appear in two census records. Census, 1850, New York, Yates County, Milo. James Van Scoy, 42, m, laborer, b NY; Sarah, 32, f, b NY; Simeon, 12, m, b NY; William, 10, m, b NY; George, 9, m, b NY; Sharlot, 7, f, b NY; Cordelia, 2, f, b NY. Census, 1860, Ohio, Huron County, Norwalk Village. Sarah, 43, f, tailoress, b NY; William, 20, m, farmer, b NY; Charlotte, 17, f, tailoress, b NY; Simmons, 23, m, laborer, b NY; Geo, 24, m, b NY; Adelia, 12, f, b NY; unnamed, 3/12, f, b Ohio. The published cemetery inscriptions of Huron County, Ohio, list "VAN SCOY, James, bu. 6 Mar 1860" in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk Township, Huron County, Ohio, based on burial cards. William's 1879 history of Huron and Erie counties, Ohio, says William was a member of the 3rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Calvary, Company F, and was mustered out 4 November 1864. Melwood Van Scoyoc wrote "In 1900 he was living in the National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Jefferson T., Montgomery County, Ohio." Can anyone on this list tell me anything else about this family?

Is anyone searching for or a member of the Clarence BRIANT family? Clarence was b circa 1880 in Indiana. (s/o John BRIANT and Adelia BINCKLEY). He had a brother, Leland, living in Cleveland. I'm not sure Clarence was married twice - in 1900 census wife if Estella - 1910 we have a Glenna - are they the same person? There were 2 children - Earl 1899 and Gretchen . I could not locate the family on the 1920 census. Clarence would have died before 1952 and lived in Bellevue City, Huron County

I have reason to believe that my great-grandfather might be from Ohio, and I don't know the location. His name was Archibald DABBS and he would have lived there around the 1850s to 1870s. The reason I have so little information on him is because he died when my Mom was only 7 years old. He married an Elizabeth. I would be interested in any DABBS there. I am in SC so it is a long drive. There are also connections with the JACOBS, BRAZELLS AND GRIFFIN families.

I have been searching for the parents/siblings of Charles Ernest NICHOLS [1865-1937] reported via death certificate to have been born in Lorain County Columbia Station. Charles is reflected in the US Federal census of 1900/1910/1920 Cuyahoga Co OH and the 1930 Summit County [Copley Twp]. Charles died in Eustis Florida [203 Mary Street] in 1937 and I am trying to establish the connection (if any) between him and John Darius NICHOLS [who also had a summer home in Eustis Fl in the 1930-40 time frame. There is a group of NICHOLS' in Copley Township in 1880 but I cannot specifically link Charles b 1865 with them in the census records. There is, however a Charles (age 15) listed in the 1880 Lorain Co Oh census in the Adeline NICHOLS household. He is listed as an "adopted son". Earlier yet in 1870 census w/Adeline NICHOLS (widow) is Charles E. WILDER (age 5). This complicates matters. Was Charles E WILDER b 1865 adopted and had a name change to NICHOLS? The best I can do at this point is to work backwards from what I know. I have not seen any researchers who have "claimed" Charles NICHOLS b 1865 in the 1880 Lorain County census. [This group is off of Marcus NICHOLS b 1806 Conn., wife Adeline b. 1816 NY. Marcus died before the 1860 census where Adeline is now listed as a 54 year old widow with sons Henry (14), George (12), Charles (10), Franklin (4) Noted for possible ties to Charles Ernest NICHOLS B. 1865 in OH, parents unknown. 1880 U.S. Federal census Columbia in the County of Lorain State of Ohio. page 413, house 107. My Charles E NICHOLS worked for the railroad his entire life as a telegrapher in Copley where the Copley Historical Society operates. Charles E NICHOLS first married Marry Ann BRAY [1868-1915] daughter of Samuel BRAY of Richland County. They married in Shiloh in 1887. Mary Ann was born in 1868 in Shiloh and died in 1915 in Cuyahoga County. Marry is reportedly buried in Shiloh - I have not been able to confirm this. Charles second married Frances E. SHERBONDY [b. 1869] widow of Milton SHERBONDY. Milton SHERBONDY [b1862] , son of Hiram [b. 1837] grew up in Portage, Summit County. Milton died in 1933. Milton Jay SHERBONDY [1862-1933] was married to Frances E. After Milton died, in 1935 Frances married Charles. Charles Ernest retired as a rail road telegrapher June 1936, having worked for 40 years in Copley, OH (Summit County). Shortly after he "retired" after June 1936 he & Frances went to Eustis Florida, an area not that densely populated in 1935-36. Coincidentally John Darius NICHOLS left [North Olmsted] Ohio sometime after the 1920 census and moved to Eustis Florida. The Elyria "Chronicle Telegram" newspaper reflects numerous blurbs in the "social" column beginning about August 1932 noting Eustis as his "home". John Darius NICHOLS and wife Adell are both buried in Butternut Ridge Cemetery North Olmsted. Charles died in Eustis FL in 1937 and his body was transported back to Ohio where he is buried in Akron's Glendale cemetery. Interesting is that Charles NICHOLS was interred with/next to Milton SHERBONDY (France's first husband) & Frances joined both of them in 1945. All three of them share one monument. According to Charles' death certificate he was born March 10, 1865 in Columbia Station Ohio. This info came from Frances and may not be entirely accurate. Clearly he has ties to Huron County / Richland County /Summit County (& perhaps Lorain County) before the 1900 - 1930 records. I believe Charles was buried in Akron's Glendale cemetery because Frances had a plot there. Charles and Marry had children all born in Huron County- Stella Martha b 1890 m. (1) Hubert KULLMAN (2) J. Fred BRINKMAN. Ray Ernest b. 1893 m (1) May Edith THOMSEN (2) Verna Catherine KLINE. Helen Margaret b. 1895 m (1) J. Paul TURNER (2) Milliard KENYON. Arthur BRAY b. 1899 m. Evelyn ANDERSON. Earl Owen b. 1904 m. "Martha" [ divorced 1958 Dade County Fl]. I know the parents of Marry Ann BRAY NICHOLS and the naming patterns of their children are not reflected in her family's naming pattern. I can only assume Stella Martha was named after Charles' mother...perhaps Ray Ernest after Charles' father. What is most intriguing is that during this time frame (in Lorain County specifically) is a Richmond/Richmund NICHOLS who did have a son born circa 1845 (Charles) who served in the civil war, served in both Ohio & Michigan and died of wounds sustained before 1870. I have corresponded with various researchers of this line and no one "claims" any lineage from Charles son of Richmond line. Does any of this ring any bells to any of you all? Does anyone have any suggestions where I can dig further for info? I am planning a trip to Ohio in July with my husband to try to flush this out.
