I am searching for others who are researching the ROGERS family of New London, Huron County Ohio. My ggrandmother was Ida May ROGERS. I found her in a census living down the street from my relatives whom she later married, George BOWLES. I believe that she is the daughter of Andrew and Clara ROGERS. In anyone else researching this family? Time frame 1870-1950.

My great great grandfather Samuel POST is listed among the pioneers of Huron Ohio. He came from New York State, probably around Albany. His farm was at Willard Ohio, he was married to Manerva BUTLER from Mass. They emigrated during or after the firelands land grants after the war of 1812. His son, Allen, was my great grandfather. He lived in the same town and farmed there all his life, he was married to Rebecca KNAVEL from Indiana. They prospered and lived there for many years. Allen signed up in his fifties and fought in the Civil War. I have a picture of this family on their farm. I have pictures of the graves and lists of children. However, I can find no information on the KNAVELs or the BUTLERs. I can find no land grant or other information on the property at Willard and the location of the same, at this time. You have Samuel listed among the early pioneers but with little information as well. Is there any other information that can be shared about this family that is easy to retrieve. Or can you suggest books that might have information that would help me?

I am trying to find information on Elethear COLE who lived with her husband Adolphus M. GREEN in Huron Co., OH from about 1831 until 1846. There were several COLE families living in Huron Co. at that time but I have been unable to find a connection. If anyone has a COLE family with a missing sister, please let me know. Adolphus M. GREEN was born in New Ashford, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts on 29 OCT 1793 to parents of English descent. He married about 11 OCT 1816 to Sally RODERICK. She died about 1820. Adolphus married Elethear COLE on 15 MAR 1821, I think in Kingsbury, NY. Elethear COLE was born in Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY in 1800. (NOTE- There is a Samuel COLE died 15 DEC 1834 age 62 years and wife Susannah died 15 JAN 1855 age 74 yrs., 8 months buried in a cemetery on Dean Road, Kingsbury, Washington county NY.) Adolphus and Elethear GREEN lived in Monroe Co., NY from about 1821 to 1823 and Danville, Steuben Co., NY from 1824 to 1830. By 1831, they resided in Greenwich twp., Huron Co., Ohio. By 1850 they had sold their land in Huron co., OH and moved to Livingston Co., MI where they lived the rest of their lives.

I thought I had a handle on all the MAYNARD family in Huron County well into the 1900's. The only Oscar MAYNARD I have is Oscar Lucerne MAYNARD b. August 20, 1861 in Ripley Twp., d. July 12, 1933 in Toledo. There is a Oscar MAYNARD 51 in the 1900 census of Greenwich Twp. This would match with the age of 45 in the article. The only MAYNARD male I have born that fits is Wakeman Osborn MAYNARD 1849 - 1924. My father lived in the Greenwich area from 1878 until 1942 and always told me all the MAYNARD family in the county were related. Does anyone have any other information on the Oscar who tried to race a train with a horse and buggy? The Oscar in in the article would have been born in 1849 - 1851.

Amy Armstrong Lookup Results-- Oscar MAYNARD and wife, who live about a mile east of Greenwich, while crossing the Big Four track at Greenwich, about 9 o'clock this morning, were struck by the south-bound morning express and fatally injured. The horses had crossed the track and the locomotive struck the buggy between the wheels, totally wrecking the vehicle and throwing Mr. & Mrs. MAYNARD quite a distance. They were taken to the village to be cared for. Mrs. MAYNARD's death was expected at any moment at last report this afternoon, and Mr. MAYNARD, who is almost 45 years old, is believed to be so seriously injured that he cannot long survive. My first question is, where are the Lyme Church records stored; how many of the church's records are extant? I am still trying to pin down more information about my gg-grandmother, Caroline CHAPMAN, who seems to have been quite a woman. Even though Caroline lived with her family at Amsden's Corners (Bellevue) she mentions in her memories attending Lyme Church. That's probably where she met her husband, William SAWYER; I assume they were married there (1842). I would like to know if Caroline's age is listed in the marriage record. Also, several of you provide me material about Caroline's parents and some siblings' burials. Now Caroline probably (as per a newspaper article) had a third and last elderly marriage to Cornelius Manning GATES in 1894, to which her adult children were vehemently opposed. Her own obituary (1910) still names her as Caroline SAWYER (does not say where she was buried). William SAWYER's burial is on the in the Bellevue cemetery inscription lists. but Caroline is not listed there. A Caroline GATES is listed (there was another Caroline GATES of Norwalk who died in 1956 - this may be she) but C.M. GATES is not. LDS site has a submission saying he was buried in Lyme Grange Cemetery. No obit on the R.B. Hayes site, either. I'd appreciate someone to check further details on these two. Any information on a John J. RENZ, supposedly Caroline's second husband?

About 7 weeks ago I sent to The Huron Co. Probate for various records of my New London,& Ripley Ohio BOWLES relatives. I made several phone calls and each time was told that they dont have anyone there who has the time to do the records for genealogists researching. I am extremely disappointed as I was hoping the naturalization records would give a point of origin for my ancestors. I gave the dates when my BOWLES applied for naturalization and everything. Is there some other way for me to get these records? Are they at the library? Searching for Richard BOWLES 1868 Declaration, v. 1, pg 267. 1871 Proof of Residence and 1871 Naturalization record. Also William BOWLES 1866 Proof of Residence ,v.1, pg 12 and Naturalization record, v. 2, pg 86.

Brown Cemetery, also called Puckrin's Corners Cemetery, is located in the northeast corner of lot 17, Section 1, Twp. 4, Range 22, Norwalk Twp, on the west side of Laylin Road, 500 feet south of SR 18, just two miles east of Norwalk This neighborhood cemetery was owned for years by John Brown and is shown on the 1859 wall map and in the 1873 atlas. In 1856, the JONES, LAYLIN, and ROBERTS stones were removed to Woodlawn Cemetery; and in January 1878, the FOWLER, SCHOOLCRAFT, and BROWN stones were also taken to Woodlawn Cemetery. In the early 1900s oldtimers recall stones still on the site, but nothing remains today. If anyone has access to the descriptions of prisoners in the Ohio State Peniteniary in 1860 I would appreciate knowing what it says about Julius BEMENT, age 47, lecturer, in the prison for bigamy. Julius BEMENT was born in 1813 in Cortland Co, NY, married Sarah DARLING about 1845 & on 1850 census they were in Skaneateles with his occupation listed as "none". Sarah & Julius had children Reuben born 1841, Frances born 1845 (my GG GRandmother), Ed born 1848, Sarah born 1850 & William born 1853. Julius left his family sometime after 1853 & moved to Ohio, or went there to lecture perhaps. His brother Jeremy was a carriage producer in NY who moved to MIchigan in 1849 where he died, perhaps Julius followed him as far as Ohio, we don't know how he came to leave NY, but he married Charlotte JOHNSON in 1857 in Huron Co, Ohio & by 1860 was in jail for bigamy. Sarah's entry in the 1865 census where she is listed with her children, Reuben (a tailor age 23), Ed (an ex-Civil War soldier age 18), & Sarah & William shows her "divorced by the laws of the State of NY". Her daughter Frances had married Thomas DARBY in 1865 & lived nearby in McLean/Dryden area of Tompkins Co, NY in 1865. By 1870 Sarah lists herself as a widow in Clarksville, Iowa, living with dau Frances & husband Thomas DARBY. Dau Sarah also lived nearby as did son William. Son Reuben, a tailor in Groton NY in 1865 disappears after 1865 & is never seen again on census. Son Ed moved to Minneapolis about 1872. We presume Julius BEMENT died before 1870. He enlisted in the Civil War from Ohio in 1861-March 1862 when he was given a disability discharge & there is no evidence he ever lived long enough to seek a Civil War pension. If anyone knows where he might have died or be buried, I would appreciate knowing that as well as the description the prison records give...If you know how I could obtain a copy of the prison records, where to write to get that information, I would appreciate knowing that. Thanks for any help anyone out there might give.

Through the sister county list, Erie, I was able to get official details of William SAWYER and Caroline CHAPMAN's marriage in Erie County, 1842. Caroline was indeed under 18 and had her father's permission. So the date, 1816, given in her obit was probably nine or ten years off. 1850 census had it right. She could still have been the first white child born in Bellevue, but that's the least important. Still some mysteries to solve but this certainly has helped. Where Caroline is really buried is one. She also says her grandfather's name was William. Wonder if he is the one who started a school in Huron in 1815?

Am seeking info on the SIGNOR line as several of this clan stayed in Ohio, married, and some are buried in Huron County cemeteries. I have a Jacob SIGNOR in Clarksfield, Huron County in 1860 census and he died in that location in the 1880's. I am presently researching the entire SIGNOR genealogy from their entrance into the states back in 1710. Many stayed in the northeast section of the county but others migrated to many different states from one coast to the other. Understand that Juliet SIGNOR married Edgar CROXFORD and the family is included in the Huron Cemetery Inscriptions on pages 876 and 887. Would like to learn the places of birth and deaths of her family and will exchange information on the SIGNORs.

Tom Neel Look Up Results - It almost seems as if Aaron WOLCOTT left Ruggles Twp., or died with nothing. He sold his land in 1839; he was last taxed in 1841 with three cows. Nothing in Huron Co. estates for that time period. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Ruggles and they didn't keep good records then, to our knowledge. Reuben WOLCOTT is in everything and the children are laid out in cemetery records, Congregational church records, etc., etc. His family remained in Ruggles. He seems to be a prominent land owner. Have you tried a search in the 1850 census for Aaron or his family? John SAGE pops up buying land 1840; 1843 first appearing on the tax list for Ruggles Twp.

I recently received copies of immigration and Naturalization papers from Huron Co. Probate thru helpful clerk Melanie Langjhar. In these records I see that Alexander PORTER came as a character witness for my great uncle, William BOWLES, and H. HUBBARD stood with my ggrandfather, Richard BOWLES. I would like to get more info on these families and their association or friendship with the BOWLES. I think that from looking at William BOWLES papers that he and Alexander may have served in the Civil War Volunteer Infantry together.

I am researching the family of C.E. ROGERS. My GGrandfather, George BOWLES, remarried in 1898 to Ida ROGERS. Her marriage certificate was signed by her father C.E. as she was only 17. I have been for some time researching the family of Andrew ROGERS of New London as the census showed them living 2 doors down from the BOWLES, and I thought this was Ida's family, however I was mistaken. This is a good lesson for me as sometimes proximity is a good lead to follow and sometimes it is just coincidence. I am hoping that Andrew ROGERS is perhaps some relative as I have accumulated a good bit of info on his family. However I would appreciate collaborating with anyone with info on this line. I have not come across C.E. ROGERS in the Huron Census. It may be his name was Charles or Chauncy.
