Ken Shute Look Up Results - I could find no record of your William A. FRANCIS in our Death Index for Huron County, Ohio, 1908-1919, nor in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book. However, curiously, I did find references to two obits for a William A. FRANCIS, age 77, where the death dates given were about a month apart. One was reported by the Clyde Enterprise newspaper, the other by the Sandusky (OH) (Daily) Register. From the R.B. Hayes (online) Obituary Index- 1. William A. FRANCIS, age 77, place of death- Norwalk, died 2/12/1910. Reported in the Clyde Enterprise, 2/17/1910, page 4, col. 1. 2. William A. FRANCIS, age 77, wife- Lotta HOUTZ, place of death- Norwalk, died 3/13/1910. Reported in the Sandusky (OH) (Daily) Register, 3/16/1910, page 7, col. 3.

My great-great-grandmother was Kate Louisa BROOKER. She was born Aug 7, 1868 in Dalston, London, England to Henry James BROOKER and Amelia BROOKER (ne GARDNER). Kate had a brother Jim who had a son, also named Jim, who moved to Ohio. I believe Jim senior stayed in England but I'm not certain. Jim junior married a Kate. They had several children, including Ernie, Arthur and Russell. I believe Ernie's wife's name was Carol, and either Arthur or Russell was married to a Dorothy. My 80-year-old great-aunt has the following address for Russell- Russ Brooker, South Norwalk Rd., RD3, Norwalk, Ohio. This address was given to my great-aunt many years ago. I don't know when Russell last lived there. Today I found the following record in the Social Security Death Index- Russell E BROOKER, born Aug 17, 1918, died Sep 6, 1992, last residence 44857 (Norwalk, Huron, OH), SSN 272-10-7919. I can't be certain but I think this is probably my Russell BROOKER. I then found the "USGenWeb Archives for Huron County, Ohio" web site, and in the cemeteries index, found the following- BROOKER- Arthur L, 667; Baby Boy, 667; Carol, 667; Carol S, 659; Elizabeth, 533; Ernest A, 659, 660, 667; Freda M, 667; Henry, 659, 667; James A, 660, 667; James F, 660, 667; Kate E, 660, 665, 668; Mary E STUTZMAN, 515; Russell, 668, and Brooker Monument, 659. Could you please tell me what the book says about these BROOKERs? As you can see, all of the names I've mentioned are listed here except for Dorothy, so I'm hopeful that these BROOKERs are indeed my relatives. I'm also curious about the BROOKER monument on page 659.

My Grandmother was Velma Frances SPURLING, b. 20 Aug 1909, d: 16 DEC 1972. She was born in Avery, Erie County, OH and married Donald SHUMER. My Great Grandparents are Robert Lorne SPURLING, b. 1888 in Brantford, Ont., Canada, d. EST 1970 and Rose Pearl HENRETTY, b. 1 FEB 1885 in Shennandoah, VA, d. 2 MAY 1952. They married in approximately 1905. They lived in Norwalk, OH at 13 Jackson St. (is there still such an address?) my mother spent part of her early years in the children's home (born in 1934, and left OH somewhere between 1939 and 1944). She wasn't bad, but I think she was neglected, so she and her sisters (or maybe just one) had to go there. She remembers being taken in at Christmas time by a couple (or family) that would let them write their Christmas wish list on a piece of paper and then burn it and send it up the chimney. Magically her wish was there waiting for her on Christmas when she woke! She asked for a play iron, ironing board and doll. Wow, that story really touched my heart! She just told me this today. I wondered if any of you heard of a family that did this? She doesn't know their name. Remember the time frame: 1934, and left OH somewhere between 1939 and 1944. Unfortunately, when she went back to the children's home, her things had disappeared. So had the matching "Shirley Temple" dresses that she and her sister had. She remembers seeing other kids wearing her dress at the children's home. My mother has a book to write (in her head), I just wish she would! You know, out of sad and poor times, came the most wonderful mother! In spite of her up bringing, she became a great lady! And so did her sister(s).

I hold a documented key, that may help someone who is researching a Nicholas MOSIER or MOSER line. My Great Grandfather (Nicholas MOSER) name was incorrectly spelled as MOSIER on the Huron Co. Ohio 1860 census. (MOSER to MOSIER) My Great Grandmother was "Elizabeth FURRIER" MOSER. This family came to the US in 1851 from Bern Switzerland, not Germany, as listed on page 47, of the 1860 Bellevue, Huron Co. Ohio Census . ( How ever they spoke German.) I can document this family back to the 1600s & the spelling of this name to be MOSER. Nicholas Jr. was the oldest child of Nicholas & Elizabeth MOSER. My grandfather had 3 brothers, John, Fred, & Christian and 2 sisters Mary & Ann. Some of my Grandfather's brothers used the spelling MOSIER. (I know his brother John used the spelling MOSIER.) I would be pleased to share my information. My MOSER line is documented back to the 1600s in Switzerland.

My current quest is for information regarding Sumner MESSENGER, who was my great grand-father. He was born about 1859, since the 1870 Census for Fairfield Township, Huron County, lists his age as 11. The same census has him living with Elizabeth, who we presume to be his Mother, age 29, and a younger brother age 7. We have no other information about who his parents were The 1880 Census has him, age 20, living with the family of Emery CARPENTER. Emery's Father, Leonard is living just 3 houses away. Sumner's brother is living with the family of Samuel HARVEY, just 2 houses away. Elizabeth MESSENGER is no longer to be found. Sumner married Elizabeth CARPENTER, the daughter of Leonard CARPENTER in October 1880. Their daughter Blanche was born on January 20, 1882. The 1900 Census has the family in Blackriver Township, Lorain County. Family records indicate that Sumner died in 1901. On the Huron County website I found "Huron County, OH Cemetery Inscriptions" published by The Huron County Chapter of OGS, 1997. This lists Sumner, his wife Elizabeth, and his Mother-in-law as listed on page 81. Does anyone have the actual text of that page?

I would like to identify Mr. SLOCUM. Matilda DRIVER, widow of Thomas PICKETT, married Mr. SLOCUM in Erie County - I have not been able to find a first name for the man. I do know he must have died in 1858 or 1859, as Matilda has a one-year-old child with the name Eliza SLOCUM on the 1860 census and no husband. Further, they must have married sometime around 1850, but not so as to show up on the census as far as I can tell, but Matilda has a daughter named Mary SLOCUM, age 10, a son, J (or I) W SLOCUM, age 7, on the 1860 census. There are no records in Erie County for this man - perhaps someone in Huron County knows about him. Son?- Morris D. I'm researching William CROSBY and his descendants. William came to Huron Co., sometime after 1824 from NY and left sometime before 1873. Right off the top of my head I can't remember where he was in 1870 but he died in 1873 and is buried in Neosho Co., KS although it looks like he may also have a headstone in Huron County (Pg.136 according to the cemetery index.) According to his War of 1812 pension papers he lived in Crawford Co., KS and his widow also lived there in 1880. I've been able to identify the following male children as belonging to William- James, Lafayette, Edson, Francis Byron, Alford D., and Albert J. According to the 1830 Huron Co. census, He also had 5 females. I have not been able to find many and the two I did find, Orphelia and Alice (both listed in the IGI [morman online]), I can't prove as his daughters.
