My G.grandparents were Ira William BURDGE and Eliza Jane WILLIAMS, Ira's parents, Richard and Louisa BURDGE have me baffled. They all lived in the North central part of Ohio. Richard died in 1883 and Louisa in 1882, both died in Toledo but do not appear to be buried there. A friend of mine who just returned from a trip to Ohio said that she found in "Cemetery Inscriptions of Huron County" an entry for " Nancy daughter of R & L." buried in 1848. From what I can find on the net this must be an entry for Nancy A. on page 710, and could very likely be a daughter of Richard and Louisa. I do not know the layout of this book or just what information it gives but can I get a copy of that page or any information that will help me in my search for BURDGE ancestors?

I need to find out which cemetery my gr.gr.-grandfather is buried in and also his son. The names are Daniel (P. or D.) CHURCH and his son William CHURCH. My Mom says they are buried in or very close to Clarksfield. I know William died somewhere around 1890--1895. If I can find their stones then I can try to get copies of their death certificates. I really need Daniel's because I haven't been able to get past him in my research. Hopefully I will be able to find a clue about where he came from.

I have been looking for years for the maiden name of Elizabeth MILLS who was bn abt 1802 probably Bucks Co., PA and mar Henry MILLS (actually MILL) bn 24 Apr 1799 Bucks Co. They arrived in Huron Co. approx. 1835 - - - no relation to the Isaac MILLS family. Elizabeth and Henry d 13 Apr 1839 ag 37 and 16 Nov 1840, respectively, and are bur in unmarked graves in the old New Haven Cemetery between New Haven and Plymouth, OH on Rt 61, property which once was Reuben SKINNER'S (also an ancestor). Henry Timman found her name on Henry MILL's death record and read it as KENOR/KENOUR but practically illegible, he said. But among family records, I found a reference, in German, to Henry's marriage and it seems Elizabeth's surname was REISSER/RIESSER or something like that! The names do not even resemble one another and I have thought of a second marriage but no record of that either). I have searched for Elizabeth under both surnames but cannot prove her. Would you have access to any OH records, or any records which might show Elizabeth's maiden name? I would be grateful for any information on her - - or a point-in-the-right- direction for further research.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I had no luck in finding the maiden name of Elizabeth MILLS (MILL) in our Huron County, Ohio publications, or on the internet, except for the following posting on Ancestry. com's Message Board, 3 July 1999. If you can accept that Henry (Heinrich) may actually have had a first name of John (presumed Johann), then this posting seems to match the info you gave. The birth years of (John) Henry and Elizabeth correspond (1799 and ca 1802 respectively) to those you gave; the maiden name of Elizabeth is RIESSER (same as your putative REISSER/RIESSER); the marriage date is reasonable (1821), and the place where the RIESSER family settled after they came here from Germany is given as Bucks County, PA (where you had Henry and Elizabeth MILL living). The posting lines up so well with your information that it almost appears that it might have come from your old family records. Unfortunately though, the name and address of the person who posted this on the Message Board is not given. Here are the details. After plugging in the words "Henry MILL, Bucks Co. PA" in the search engine for the Ancestry.com Message Board (www.ancestry.com), I brought up the following (item # 9)- Subject- RAISSER/REISSER?RIESSER family. Author- (blank) Surname- REISSER, MILL Classification- Query Date- 3 July 1999. "John Heinrich MILL bn 1799 mar Elizabetha RIESSER bn ca 1802, mar ca 1821. Looking for RIESSER family to which Elizabetha belonged! Jacob RAISSER with wf Anna Maria and several ch left Germany 1752, settling in Bucks Co., PA. It is believed that Elizabetha would have been a dau of Peter REISSER, bn ca 1774 who mar dau of Maria Mill/Peter FRANKENFELD. Peter REISSER could have been son of either Johann Jacob RAISSER, bn Germany 1736 or Johann Martin RAISSER bn germany 1742, sons of Jacob RAISSER/Anna Maria. Does anyone have any info on this family with any one of the various spellings?"

I got an e-mail from a man in Kansas earlier this year that said he had found many interesting pictures in a trunk that was his grandmother's. He could recognize the Kansas cousins but none of the pictures had names on them. The family name is MERRILL. His family is related to my MERILLs in Huron County. We know that some of the family went to Kansas and from a news article we know that Arthur MERRILL lived with the Kansas MERRILLs, (William), for a period of time. The question is how would one try to identify the people in these pictures? Is there a MERRILL reunion in Huron County?

Ken Shute Look Up Results - From what I can piece together from our Huron County, Ohio publications and the internet, it appears that Phillip UPP, Sr. came to Richmond Township, Huron County, Ohio, in the fall of 1835. His family at that time consisted of his wife, Christina LAUER, and four children: Philip, Jr., Jacob, Elizabeth and Hannah. Philip UPP, Sr. died in 1845. Philip UPP, Jr. married Hannah CRONINGER in 1846 and resided in Plymouth, Richmond Township. Jacob UPP, the oldest child, married Susan CRONINGER in 1844 and died in 1862. One of Jacob's children was also named Philip. Jacob left a family in Michigan. Elizabeth UPP married Jonathon CRONINGER in 1843. Hannah UPP was reported as living in Pennsylvania as of 1886. The information I found on the presumed wife of Philip UPP, Sr. (Christina LAUER) came from the internet as follows- From the online IGI web site www.familysearch.com- Philip UPP m. Christina LAUER 19 Apr. 1812, York, PA. From Ancestry.com- York County, Pennsylvania Marriages, 1800-1846- First Trinity Reformed Church. Name- Christina LAUER Description- Bride Event- Marriage Date- 19 Apr. 1812 Church- Records of First Trinity Reformed Church, City of York, York Co., Pennsylvania, Marriages 1800-1846. Note- In "viewing the record," the Groom is listed as "Philip OP," with otherwise the same information as for Christina. If you haven't already, it might be worth your while to check out the USGENWEB page for York County, PA. The Cemetery inscription information for Christena , w/o Philip UPP, (Sr.) would indicate she was born about 1789, the same as the implied birth year for Philip, Sr. Further details on this UPP family- 1. I am wondering if the Phillips school has any relationship to this PHILLIPS family? I find Michael on the plat maps in both Peru and Norwalk townships. Not certain if they are one and the same Michael. My Michael was a member of St. Sebastians in Bismark.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I couldn't find anything definite connecting your Michael PHILLIPS with the Phillips School in Huron County. There appears to be at least two different Michael PHILLIPS mentioned in our Huron County, Ohio publications and from internet sources. I believe your guy may be Michael J. PHILLIPS, 1881-1953(or 1951). If he's not yours, let me know and I'll send you the references I have to another Michael PHILLIPS. I also have a few references to the Phillips School I'm giving below. First- Michael J. PHILLIPS. 1.Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions. St. Sebastian Catholic Cemetery, Sherman Township. Page 845. Section D - Row 13. 14 Edna E. PHILLIPS 1896-1967. Michael J. This article refers in part to a newspaper clipping kept in a scrapbook by Katherine Maloney who was a well-known teacher in Norwalk Schools. She taught in Norwalk Township district schools after completing Normal School at Monroeville, and also taught at the Phillips School in Norwich Township. 6. From Yahoo.com comes a picture of a class at Phillips School, Norwich Township, 1927-1928. Depicted in the class picture is Kathryn Maloney, teacher, who was mentioned in Timman's article (item 5. above). Also, for what it's worth, one of the students is named Joseph PHILLIPS. The URL for this picture site is: www.geocities.com/huronphotos/phillipsschool.htm. P.S. The Michael PHILLIPS found in the 1845 Plat Book of Huron County, Ohio as owning land in Norwich and Peru Twps. obviously would not be the same as the Michael J. PHILLIPS (born 1881) described above.

Susan's Response to Ken Shute's Look Up - Thanks for all your info, doesn't quite fit though. Close. I suspect cousins from Alsace Loraine. My Michael was born 1796 in Aschbach, Alsace Loraine, parents- Joseph and Maria Anna ALTENBACH. Michael is buried at St. Sebastians in Bismark. He had a son Michael, born 1823 in Stundwiller, and a grandson Michael born probably 1843 or later in Ohio. Michael Sr. mentioned first above also had a son John, born 1825 in Stundwiller, who is my ancestor. John is buried in St. Stephens cemetery, Seneca county and lived in Norwich township. John's son Jacob J. PHILLIPS is my great grandfather. But I do have three Michaels per above on my database, and there are probably many more from the same clan back in France. If anyone is researching PHILLIPS, let me know. My database came from family records and two other researchers who kindly shared their info with me. It appears that many more of the Aschbach and Stundwiller PHILLIPS immigrated to the same areas of Ohio. My PHILLIPS in Huron and then Seneca county are intermarried with MYERS, STEINMETZ, FALTER, UNSER, BOWERS, SHELB, KLUDING, SWARTZENBERGER, CLINGER, KORB, HAVERT. In my great grandfather Jacob's immediate family alone, 3 siblings married STEINMETZs and 2 married UNSERs.

A cousin, Marcia Pemberton, and I have been digging, digging, digging for anything about Jacob LUPER/LUPFER/LUPHER and his wife, Nancy MCMURTRY/MCMURTREY/MCMURTRAY. Jacob and Nancy were both born in Crawford County, PA in 1792,(he the 27th of Oct, and she the 8th of Feb. Married there 15 Oct 1813, and arrived in Huron County around 1833/34 or so. Nancy died 11 Oct. 1836. Where exactly? And where is she buried? Jacob may or may not have remarried a Sally HASKINS, but he died the 8th of Oct in 1852, we think, but may have been 1842. Again, where the heck is he? Their children were all born in PA, David, 1814; Sarah, 1816; James Martin Barnhyel, 1817; Harriet, 1822; John A., 1824; Margaret Abigail, 1829; and Jasper, 1832. The 4 oldest kids may have been able to fend for themselves when Nancy died, but the 4 youngest weren't old enough to be independent - so maybe Jacob did remarry for the sake of his children. Marcia and I would truly appreciate whatever information we might receive.
