Is there anyone who is researching the ENSIGNs of Ohio?

I am not able to provide much on ENSIGNs in Ohio, but would really like to hear anything about my ENSIGN g-g-g-g-grandmother, Louise (ENSIGN) PUTNAM. She and Daniel Baldwin ("Dan") PUTNAM were married 6 Oct 1815 in Margaretta Township, Huron County (Later Erie Co. ) Ohio. She later moved to Hillsdale Co., Michigan with Dan PUTNAM, and died there on 5 April 1840. Family tradition indicates that she was born 27 April, 1797-99 (?). In the book on the ENSIGN Family in America there is a hint in the family listing of Samuel ENSIGN and Mary IVES that the Louise ENSIGN who married Dan PUTNAM was the daughter of their son Ephraim ENSIGN, but I have found no other information on Ephraim. A Linus ENSIGN, also a son of Samuel ENSIGN and Mary IVES, was in Erie County at the time that Louise ENSIGN and Dan PUTNAM were married, but I have not been able to find evidence that connects Linus and Louise, except possibly as niece and uncle, based on the hint in the book, mentioned above. Family tradition is that Louise ENSIGN's mother was named BRIGGS, and church records for Whitestown, Oneida Co., NY, show that a Linus ENSIGN and Dedama BRIGS were married there on 12 April 1798. I have not proved that this Linus and the one who was in early Huron County, OH, are the same.

I am looking for the parents of Samuel ENSIGN b N.Y abt 1805/6. Was in Huron County, Ridgefield twp. OH in 1860. He married Betsy (believed to be SMITH). I believe that he is the son of Samuel ENSIGN and Anna CURTIS, but am not able to confirm this. His son Abner married in Erie Co. PA about 1871 to Sarah PUTNAM. She was, from all indications, an orphan living with Hites. in PA. I have found only four ENSIGNs in OH in 1810. The ENSIGNs that were in Ohio in the early days seem to have mostly been born in N. Y. The ENSIGNs that I found in OH in 1810 are-- 1-Ira ENSIGN-Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Twp. pg 006 of database OH 1810 Tax list, From Washington Co. Census Index. 2-Samuel ENSIGN-Cuyahoga Co. Washington Index. 3-Another Samuel-Same as the other Samuel. 4-Seth I. Trumbull Co. Troy Twp p.37 Washington Co. Index. All of these are tax lists. In 1820 Ira ENSIGN is still in Cuyahoga Euclid Twp. as follows 01001-0131 Which translates to 1 male to 16 and 1 male to 45. and 3 females to 10 and 1 female 26-44. Seth J. is in Trumbull Mesopotamia in 1850. 1820-William Jr. is in Ashtubula Co. Monroe Twp p.19. Ira is in Cuyahoga Euclid Twp. p 36. Horace is in Geauga Co. Madison Twp p 110. Silas is in Richland Co. Franklin p. 168. Seth I. is listed in Trumbull Mesopotamia on the 1809 Tax list p. 1809. Seth I. is said to be the son of Samuel and Mary IVES b 16 January, 1783 brother to Samuel who is said to have married Anna CURTIS. I'm not sure that Seth I would have been old enough to be the father of a girl old enough to marry by 1815.

After 3 years plus, I'm still trying to find the parents of Lewis Dwight BAKER, Born 10 Jun 1840 at/near Lyme, Huron County, Ohio. The Birth information is off his Civil War Pension and Homestead papers. No mention of parents names on any documents. In 1850, I found him with a KING family in Michigan, as a 10 year old. Contact with the KING family have not provided any leads.

I would greatly appreciate any information that would help identify the parents of my grandfather, Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS. According to his death certificate (information provided by my grandmother), he was born in Blanket Hill, OH on March 9, 1872 and his parents were Albert DAVIS and May SHELL, both born in PA. However, for the 1900 census, Lafe stated that he was born in PA and I can find no evidence that there ever was a Blanket Hill, OH. He married Harriet SNYDER in New Haven Township, Huron County, OH on October 14, 1896 and died there on September 22, 1923. According to a history of the RUBINS family, published by a distant cousin in 1973, "Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents." I don't know where she got that information, but Lafe's daughter was still living then, so maybe she supplied it.

Resigned commission in 1853, and entered banking business. In 1860 became president of Louisiana State Military Academy. In May 1861, was commissioned colonel in regular army and ordered to report to General Scott at Washington. Commanded a brigade in battle of Bull Run. Made brigadier in August 1861, and sent to Kentucky. After the capture of Fort Donelson, Sherman was assigned to 5th Division of Army of the Tennessee. Was wounded at Shiloh. Participated in siege of Corinth, and promoted to major-general. In charge at Memphis during latter part of 1862, and later led an expedition up the Yazoo. Bore a conspicuous part in all the operations which led to the capture of Vicksburg, July 4, 1863. Ordered to move toward Chattanooga October 4, 1863. On November 24, 1863, his position on Missionary Ridge sustained the heaviest shock of battle. Pressed Bragg back to Ringgold. Relieved Burnside at Nashville and defeated Jackson at Meridian. Assigned to command of Military Division of Mississippi March, 1864. Began the campaign from Chattanooga which forced Johnston back to Atlanta, and led to its capture. Organized the expedition known as the "March to the Sea", and on December 24, 1864, captured Savannah. Moving northward, Charleston capitulated, and he entered North Carolina, uniting with Schofield's command and confronting Johnston's forces, much to Grant's grief at Petersburg. On April 14, 1865, he received Johnston's surrender. After the war, assigned to the Division of the Mississippi. Succeeded Grant as lieutenant-general, in 1866, and after Grant's election to the Presidency, he became general. Retired in February, 1884. In 1871 - 72 made a tour of Europe. Wrote his memoirs. Died in New York City, February 14, 1891.

I then went back and checked the index for the 1850 census. There were two Harveys in Mahoning County and one Harvy in Huron County then. Until I checked the 1850 index, I thought I had found your Harvey. The 1860 one is probably one that was in Mahoning in 1850. I decided to check the 1870 index (ours is Huron County, Ohio, only), thinking he may have been missed in 1860, but he wasn't in that index either.

My own relationship to the SHERMAN line goes through the Waugh line, who settled in Camden Township, Lorain County, Ohio, which is just across the county border from Wakeman Township, Huron County.
