Looking for information on Hiram HOOSE. The 1850 census puts him, at age 18, in the household of Hosea TOWNSEND of New London (his surname was spelled HOUSE in the census). Census also gives his place of birth as NY, the same as Hosea TOWNSEND. On 11 September 1851, Hiram HOOSE married Lucy WEBB at Huron Co. Hiram HOOSE died Feb 1894 and is buried in New London. Hiram and Lucy had at least one child, Albert Horace HOOSE,1858-1940

My gr gr grandfather, Joseph HAMM, was naturalized in Huron County in 1842. I would love to read his Declaration of Intent to become a citizen, aka "first papers". I'm supposing these were filed at the Huron County Courthouse. Am I correct? Has anyone been successful in obtaining "first papers" for this timeframe?

Is there any one searching a MOSER, or MOSIER line, if so maybe we can help each other. My Great grandfather, Nicholas MOSER, Sr. (MOSIER) brought his family from Bern, Switzerland in 1851 to Bellevue Ohio. My grandfather Nicholas Jr. was the oldest of the six children born in Switzerland. Three more children, were born in Bellevue Ohio (see the 1860 census of Bellevue). They were William, James and Edward. They used the spelling, MOSIER. Some of the other children used the MOSIER spelling as well. There is a big error on the 1860 census. The family was from Bern, Switzerland, not Germany. (There is no Swiss language therefore German was the language spoken in my grandfathers home, this may account for the census taker thinking they were German). I have my grandfather's birth records and church records from Bern, and will be glad to share other information I have from the Swiss records with any one connected with my line of MOSER/MOSIER. My information and Swiss records date back to 1658 in Bern.

Recently a copy of a letter came to me, written by Tunnard DICKINSON, the brother of my great-great-grandfather, to his father, William, in 1849. William was in Bicker, Lincolnshire, England, but Tunnard was in Ohio. You can see a transcription of the letter at www.rosma.btinternet.co.uk/Genealogy/Documents/dickinson.htm. The letter is headed as though it was written in Oxford, Ohio. I assumed that this was Oxford in Butler County, near Cincinnati, but now I know it is almost certainly Oxford Township, which was in Huron County until 1838, and then "moved" to Erie County. My first question is where is Oxford Township? I only have a Rand McNally Road Atlas to go by, so if you could point me at an appropriately detailed map on the Web that would be fine. In the letter Tunnard says that he is living at "Audrey's Farm", which I assume is in Oxford Township (does anyone have any information about that?). He is about to move to a new farm at Hunts Corners, which I now know to be in Lyme Township. He correctly states that it is 3 miles west of Monroville (OK, he missed an "e" out of Monroeville), and implies that it is 7 miles from Audrey's Farm (a clue, perhaps). I know from my research in the UK that Tunnard DICKINSON was the son of William DICKINSON and Sarah TUNNARD (hence the unusual name, which became a common family Christian name for a couple of generations). He was born on 30 August 1821 in Bicker, near Boston, Lincolnshire, England. He was baptized on the following day, also in Bicker. His letter tells us that he is married to Mary Ann. I have a theory of who she may be which I could go into if you are interested, although the theory may fall down after consideration of what follows. I found the excellent genealogical information on the Huron County rootsweb site and was able to find the relevant entry in the 1850 census, on page 109b- 25 1461 1493 DICKINSON Turner aged 29 Farmer Born England; 26 1461 1493 DICKINSON Mary A aged 32 Born England; 27 1461 1493 DICKINSON Mary A aged 6 Born England, at school; 28 1461 1493 DICKINSON Rosetta aged 4 Born Ohio, at school; 29 1461 1493 DICKINSON Rosemund Born Ohio. I am not too worried that Tunnard's name has been incorrectly copied as Turner, either in the original or in the transcription because it is clearly him (correct wife, and correct age). This shows that Tunnard and Mary Ann must have emigrated from the UK between 1844 (Mary A Jnr's birth) and 1849 (the date of the letter). I am finding this search very interesting, and I hope that it will be interesting to those of you who may be researching the history of Huron and Erie Counties. Please read the letter (link above) because it gives some interesting details of farming in the area, and of other people. I would be very grateful if you could help me to fill in some details around Tunnard DICKINSON and his family [When did Tunnard and Mary Ann arrive in America? Maybe even the boat, port, etc. Where was Tunnard living before he moved to Hunts Corners? (Oxford Township? Audrey's Farm?) Any information about the farm they moved to at Hunts Corners, or indeed about Hunts Corners itself? What happened to the family after 1850?].

David Velten Look Up Results - There is an entry in the Huron County Cemetery Index that may or may not be your couple. It is for Riverside Cemetery, Ridgefield Township, described as being 1/2 mile east of Monroeville. In section E, Row 17, plots 6 & 7, there is a tombstone with the transcribed inscription- DICKINSON, Mary A., "Mother" 1818-1901 ___________,(illegible) ae 33y 4m 21d Unfortunately, death records in Huron Co. start in 1867. Neither Tunnard nor Mary are listed in the published death index, which covers 1867-1908. Given the 1901 date, there may be an obituary somewhere. The obit index at http://index.rbhayes.org/ doesn't have a relevant listing, but it doesn't contain all newspapers. I also did not find Tunnard or Mary listed in the 1870 Huron Co. Census Index. There are no DICKINSON entries for the index of Early Naturalizations, 1819-1864. Baughman's 1909 history of Huron Co. lists a Mary DICKINSON as wife of James DAWSON, but a check of the cemetery index reveals she was born in 1830, too old to be the daughter of Tunnard.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I have a few references from our Huron County, Ohio publications that appear to relate to your Tunnard DICKINSON family. They are- 1. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. Mary A. DICKINSON m. Gregory DEWITT 13 Jan 1863. Book 1, Page 377. Rasmond DICKINSON m. George W. BANTER 7 April 1868. Book 2, Page 111. Mary Ann DICKISON (sic) m. James CLARK 4 Aug 1859. Book 1, Page 211. 2. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions. Riverside Cemetery, Ridgefield Township. Page 765. Section e - Row 17. 6 Mary A. DICKINSON, "Mother" 1818-1901. 7 ______(illegible). ae 33y 4m 21d. 8 James CLARK, "Father," d. 29 Apr 1860, ae 46 y. 9 James ____(illegible). The Family Search web site shows Tunnard DICKINSON christened 31 Aug 1821 in Bicker, Lincolnshire, England. I could find no land ownership records for Tunnard DICKINSON in our Huron County, Ohio Atlases for 1845, or 1873. The only Atlas we have for Erie County is one for 1896, and, as expected, Tunnard is not listed there - in fact, no DICKINSON is listed there. I could find no references to "Audrey's farm," "Fred Cooper,", or a "Doctor Prouty." in any of our Atlases; however, I did find references in our 1873 Atlas of Huron County, Ohio to an "I. Banta." This person owned land in Lyme Township, close to, and just to the east of, Hunt's Corners, as follows- I. Banta, Lyme Twp, section 1, lots 4, 6, & 8. Also- I. Banta, Ridgefield Twp, section 4, lots 18 & 19. I. Banta Sherman Twp, section 2, lots 8 & 17. Monroeville lies in Ridgefield Twp, Huron County, while Hunt's Corners lies in Lyme Twp, Huron County on route 547, a few miles southwest of Monroeville. Lyme Twp abuts Ridgefield Twp to the west, while Oxford Twp, Erie County seems to abut Ridgefield Twp, Erie County, to the north. In our Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, Book III, page 130, there is an article titled "Hunt's Corners' most notorious resident." In it, Hunt's Corners is described as also being known as the Sutton Settlement, and took the name "Hunt" from Heil HUNT who first came to Ohio in 1816. He worked as a millwright at various places and made Lyme Township his permanent home in 1824. He died in 1879 at age 97 or 98. To see a map of the townships and towns in Huron County, go to sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron and click on "Pioneers, Histories and Maps, then click on Detailed Township Maps. This will bring up a map of Huron County with a grid of the townships overlaid. The cemetery maps, at that same web site, for Lyme and Ridgefield Twps, will show you the relative locations of Monroeville and Hunt's Corners.
