Looking for information on Ann UMPHRY who may have been Ann WARD who married a Jacob UMPHRY/HUMPHRY (or variation) on May 8, 1809 in Licking Co. OH. Ann was probably born around 1779. Ann UMPHRY has been found in the Huron Co. Cemetery Inscriptions.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Our Cemetery Inscriptions for Huron County, Ohio shows the following- Steuben Cemetery, Greenfield Township. Page 135. Section 1-- Row 6. 17 Ann_____, w/o Aven UMPHRY (?) d. 5 Oct 1830, age 22 y. This Ann would have been born ca 1808, just one year shy of the marriage date (1809) of your Ann, so it would appear that the inscription details don't fit your case. Also, the first name of "Aven" might be hard to corrupt for "Jacob." This Ann is also buried in the midst of a family with surname "Easter." I could find no reference of your Jacob and Ann UMPHRY/HUMPHREY, in our other Huron County, Ohio publications.

I am seeking info on Catherine Virginia PRINTZ. She was born around 1834, possibly in VA. She married David RAY in Fairfield, OH on April 17, 1864 at the home of Anna BOUGHTON. Catherine was living there at the time. Anna BOUGHTON had a daughter, Emma J., who was born in 1850. Anna was born around 1830. In the 1850 census for Fairfield Twp. there is a Theodore BOUGHTON with a wife, Hester A. (Anna?), age 20, born in VA. and a daughter, Emma J., age 6 months. I believe this may have been the family Catherine PRINTZ was living with in 1864. Anna BOUGHTON and Catherine PRINTZ may have been sisters.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I couldn't find any record of a Legrand GRAY, s/o Samuel D. GRAY, in our Huron County, Ohio publications, but I did find a number of references to Samuel D. GRAY, some of which you might not have. Perhaps these might give you new Ohio locations to check for the whereabouts of Legrand. 1. Cemetery Inscriptions, Huron County, Ohio. Clarksfield Methodist Church, Clarksfield Twp. Page 39. Old Part 1841-- Row 5 North. 10 Samuel D. GRAY 1823-1905 (Lot 9, Block 3.) 2. Huron County Ohio Marriages, by Scheuer Publications. Samuel D. Ancestry.com. a. The Ohio State Message Board. Message # 693, Thursday November 04, 1999. Posted by- Marilyn. Message- "GRAY, SCOTT, SMITH, STARR 1800's. Joseph, Abraham, Samuel d. GRAY. Mary SCOTT, Isaac SCOTT, Almira SMITH. Anna STARR. Would like info on rest of families. Also Samuel Elza Deweese." (Note- I could not find an email address for "Marilyn." I believe any replies have to be posted back to the Message Board..) b. Ohio Census, 1790-1890. This lists a Samuel D. GRAY in Warren County, Clear Creek Township, for the years 1840 (page 171), 1850 (page 849), and 1860 (page 300). (Note- Warren County, Ohio abuts Clinton County, Ohio to the west, on our map of Ohio. Clarksville, Clinton County, Ohio is just on the border with Warren County.) c. Civil War Service Records. This lists a Private Samuel D. GRAY as assigned to Company B, 3 Ohio Infantry. Were you aware of this parallel interest in your GRAY family by "Marilyn," and also the apparent residences of Samuel D. GRAY in Warren and Clinton Counties, Ohio?

My family of LUTTS/REEDs or SOULES/REEDs seemed to be following the railways. So I presumed that the tracks lead them to Branch Co. from Stueben Co. Was I wrong? This family is very confusing. I have a Franklin REED who married a Mary SOULES in New London, Huron Co. in April 1875. In May 1876. I have a birth being recorded in the Huron County Probate office for a Ora Sylvanis REED, born 9 July 1875 in Stueben Co., Indiana to a Frank and Mary SOULES. She then disappears and Frank has 4 more children with a Mary LITTS/LUTTS/LETTS about 2 years apart. OK, I presumed that Mary SOULES died and he married a Mary LITTS/ LUTTS/LETTS before the birth of sister Effie on 1 May 1877. I have not been able to find a SOULES family for Mary. I did find a LITTS/LUTTS/LETTS family for second wife in Stueben Co., Ind. This family then moved to Branch Co., Michigan. Ora married in Jan 1901 and gave his mother as Mary LETTS. I could never find a death record for Mary SOULES REED. Mary LETTS (This spelling used in Census and records most) had parents Daniel and Diane LETTS. Daniel lived and died in Huron County in late 1850's when Mary was about 6 years old. Diane continued to live with her in-laws and moved to Scott Twp., Stueben Co., Ind. when they moved. She was listed as a pauper in the Census of 1870. Her in-laws were Edward and Caroline LETTS. It was Edward's will that lead me to Branch Co., MI. Mary LETTS' siblings were Edward, Viola, John and Cornelia. I need a big light to shine in a direction with info on this family.

This makes me think he must of died quite some time before, but where. I haven't been able to see a 1900 census for him, but I just have a idea he won't show up.

I'm looking for information on an Alexander PORTER, a lawyer who located to New London in 1858 and was twice elected mayor of the village, three times Justice of the peace, and also a postmaster in 1870 & 1871. He was elected prosecuting attorney of that county. Is there anywhere where I may find information to document these things? Would the library in New London be a good place to start or is there somewhere else to research? Where would I find land deeds and tax records? He died 11/21/1873, buried Grove St. Cemetery, New London Twp, Huron Co.

I'm interested in the brick building that is on the same street as you would drive on from the south (Ruggles/Nova area) entering town. I'm sure it would be on the N.E. side, and it's very old, but at the top it has in bricks the name "MOTTER". The IOOF, I believe, is headquartered in the building. I have MOTTERs in my ancestry from this area, so was curious if it may of been one of them who owned the building.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I checked our publications for any further references to "GREGORY House," "New London Inn," and "Union Block." I did find a photo of the GREGORY House, also known as the New London Inn, in our Huron County, Ohio, A Pictorial History, page 81. Editor of this publication was Kathy G. Root; Historian was Henry R. Timman. It was published and copyrighted by The Norwalk Reflector, 1993. The photo was submitted by Vaughn Neel. (I believe I was told once that Vaughn is the father of Tom Neel). Surprisingly, I could find no other references to these terms (GREGORY house, etc.) in any of our other publications, including the Indexes to Henry Timman's Just Like Old Times, six-book series, published originally in The Norwalk Reflector. The caption to the photo mentioned above reads: " Construction of the GREGORY House, or New London Inn, began in 1873. Laborers and bricklayers work on building the west wall of the structure, facing North Main Street. The large building on the right is the old St. James Hotel, which was built in 1871. (Photo courtesy of Vaughn Neel)." At this point, maybe your best bet would be to go back to Tom Neel to see if he might be aware of any other background details on the GREGORY House/ New London Inn/ Union Block.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Re location of GREGORY House in terms of present day New London. Our History of the Fire Lands describes the GREGORY House as being built on the northeast corner of Rochester and Clarksfield Streets in New London in 1873. I find this intersection in our Atlases of 1873 and 1891 for New London, not far from where the C.C.C. & I. RR crosses Clarksfield Street. Our Huron County, Ohio, A Pictorial History, shows a picture of the west wall of the GREGORY House being built facing North Main Street. Possibly, one or more of these earlier named streets was renamed, but I don't know what's currently standing at this location. The St. James Hotel must have been located fairly close to the GREGORY House since the picture in our Huron County, Ohio Pictorial History, showing workmen working on the construction of the GREGORY House in 1873, contains as part of the caption: "The large building on the right is the old St. James Hotel, which was built in 1871."

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- In our Picturesque Huron County, Ohio, 1896, there is a picture of the residence of a Martin MOTTER in New London, page 194. It is a large two-story brick building. The caption reads: "Residence of M(artin) MOTTER, Rochester Street, New London. (A smaller version of this same picture is seen on page 69 with the caption: "Residence of Martin MOTTER, New London.") Since copyright restrictions do not apply here, I'll send you (Myrna) a private copy of the residence seen on page 194 as an attachment to a follow up email. You can then compare with your picture of the brick building that contains the name "MOTTER." In our Atlas of 1873, Huron County, Ohio, Martin MOTTER is listed in the business directory as: "Martin MOTTER, Proprieter of St. James Hotel, opposite depot (of the C.C.C.& I. RR.). This house is large and newly furnished. Good sample rooms on first floor." In our Atlas of 1891, Huron County, Ohio, Martin MOTTER is shown owning a plot of land (#443) in New London, facing Rochester Street, with a large tract of land behind this plot and plots 444-451. There are 17 MOTTERs listed in the index for the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book, including Martin MOTTER. Details for the latter- Grove Street Cemetery, New London Township. Page 433. My COURTRIGHT family is a major brick wall for me. My John COURTRIGHT & Mary CLARK were married 1797 in Sussex Co., NJ. There has been a lot of research on this family in early NY/NJ. I know all the earliest history of this family but need my missing link to connect to the main line. In the Minisink area of NJ there were many COURTRIGHTs, DECKERs, WESTFALLs & CLARKs. They can be found on almost every page of the Reformed Dutch church records. I know all abt Solomon COURTRIGHT who died 1844 in Peru, Huron Co., OH. However, he doesn't seem to be closely related to my John. At least I know he's not a sibling or parent and so of no help in my research. By 1800 John & Mary moved to Beaver Co., PA (near Pittsburgh), then across into Columbiana Co., OH in 1818. John was last in Jefferson Co., OH in 1830, as was his oldest son, Jacob V. COURTWRIGHT. However, by 1850 Jacob moved to Norwich Twp., Huron Co. His neighbors being Simon WESTFALL his wife Esther BRINK & their daughter Jane WESTFALL, who was married to Peter G. DECKER, & their children James & Cornelia DECKER. Most of Jacob's children,as well as James DECKER, seem to have moved over to Venice Twp., Seneca Co., OH. However, Jacob's nephew, James COURTWRIGHT (son of Isaac), moved to Huron between 1901-1909 along with his wife Barbara COOK. To complicate matters further, their daughter Martha (12/12/1878 -1944) married Grant W. COURTRIGHT c1893. Now Grant was the son of Harmon B. COURTRIGHT but I have no idea who he was!

Greetings from Rochester New York. I am originally from Sandusky and Hancock County's, OH Surnames that are in my family background are ROBBINS, MILLER, FISHER, SNIDER, NORTON and WARD. I have been searching all over in Maine for more information regarding my GG Grandparents Abigail J. NORTON and Danial B. WARD. The 1850 US census has them living in Dresden Maine. My G Grandfather Zachariah WARD (their son) is listed as being 10 years old in 1850. Zachariah's military service record lists him as enlisting with 20th Maine in Woolwitch Maine Aug 6th 1862 and upon being discharged, having moved to Wood County, OH Talk about a small world. I signed up at the local high school here in Rochester for a evening genealogy course. The instructor indicated that he was originally from Norwalk, Ohio. When I mentioned my Ohio WARD connection he said he remembers that there were a host of WARDs in Huron County. When I got home, I remembered that previous information supplied by BGSU, said that my Grandfather Lewis Adam WARD was born in Norwalk Ohio. As I always wondered why Zachariah came to Ohio after the Civil War, and remembering that Lewis Adam WARD (Zachariah's Son) was born in Norwalk (Huron County).I went to the Huron County Genealogy page on the net.Huron County has an excellent page. They have even cataloged everyone buried in the county. After scrolling through a lot of names, Lo and Behold, there was Abigail Jones (NORTON) WARD and Danial Brown WARD originally from Maine. There being so many WARDs listed, now I wonder if perhaps more WARDs from Maine came to Ohio during the civil war. Has anybody further information regarding the WARDs from Huron County? I have much information on this WARD line , that I would be glad to share.

The lookup of all the WARDs listed in the WARD Cemetery would be a most lengthy undertaking. All of them I'm sure are my relation, but, the only WARDs that I am interested in, as of now, being- Denial Brown WARD, 608 (my GG Grandfather); Abigail JONES NORTON WARD, 608 (his wife and my GG Grandmother); D. M., 10 (possibly David WARD, my Daniel's father, uncle or brother). David WARD is listed as being the first WARD to come to Fitchville, Huron County in the late 1700's and having Son's Austin and Samuel, but no Daniel. My dilemma being where does my Daniel Brown WARD fit in? I have records of his birth as being in 1806 Sagadahoc County, Maine and His Father being James WARD and Mother Ruth BROWN. The Huron County cemetery listings show three James WARDs: James L., 636; James M., 11; and James Paul, 444. Could any of these James be my Daniel's Father?

Charles Edward and Mary Ann (SNOW) ERSWELL came to the United States about 1834. Story is that the captain believed Maria to have died on board ship, but her mother would not throw her overboard and then she recovered. Clara Betsey ERSWELL was born in 1835 at the port of entry, New York City (time frame works). The 1840 US Census lists Charles ERSWELL. In his household are one male 30 and under 40; one male under 5 (Charles, the oldest son); females one 30 and under 40 (Mary Ann SNOW); and three 5 and under 10 (Lorah or Sarah, Maria, and Betsey, perhaps) and two under five (Eliza and ?). Mary Ann (SNOW) ERSWELL died 27 May 1849 in North Royalton, Cuyahoga County Ohio. There is a grave stone marked as follows: Mary Ann, Wife of C. ERSWELL, Died May 27, 184?(2 or 9 - ? evidently 9) ?1 years (? Evidently 4). Does anyone know name of cemetery? In the 1850 Cuyahoga County Ohio, Royalton Township Census, it is listed that a Betsey ERSWELL, 16 and born in New York, is living with Stephen WILCOX family. This Census also lists Charles ERSWELL, 46, born in England; Mary REDRUP, 68, born in England; Lorah or Sarah ERSWELL, 18, born in England; Maria, 17, born in England; then Eliza, 12; Charles, 14; Thomas, 9; Henry, 7; Edward, 5; and Mary, 3, all born in Ohio. In the 1860 Cuyahoga County Ohio Royalton Twp. Census, Maria is married to Orson MCLAFLIN(page 308). Edward ERSWELL, 13, lives with them. Charles ERSWELL, farmer, 52, Henry, 16, and Mary, 13 are also listed (page 310). Charles ERSWELL, shingle maker, 23, lives in East Townsend, Huron County, with Eliza, 20, Thomas, shingle maker, 18 and Edwin MCLAUGHLIN, 17. In the 1870 Cuyahoga County, Ohio, North Royalton census, are listed: CLAFLIN, Orson, 45, M, W, lumberman, born Ohio. CLAFLIN, Maria, 37, F, W, keeping house born Ohio. CLAFLIN, Dora, 14, F, W, attends school, born Ohio 1856. CLAFLIN, Carrie, 11,, F, W, attends school, born Ohio 1859. CLAFLIN, Arthur, 3m, M, born Ohio 1867. MC CLELEN, Amasa, 15, M, W, farm laborer, born PA. ERSWELL, Charles, 62, M, W, house carpenter, born England. Erswell, Laura 39 F W keeping house born New York (have Sarah or Lorah born England in 1850 Census). Is this Laura different and Sarah name of child from England? It was said that Charles Edward ERSWELL died 3 April 1882 in New York City; however, I find Charles ERSWELL, born Jan. 1, 1808 London, England, died April 3, 1882 on a tombstone in Volume 7, Town of Freedom, Sauk County, Oak Hill Cemetery, North Freedom village/Johnson Corners Cemetery in Row 5. Beside him is Milo LEE, no dates (son of Henry and Ida). In row 3 is daughter, Clara B.(ERSWELL), and husband, William P. RICE. Children, according to 1850 Census: 111-11, Lorah or Sarah ERSWELL, b. 1832, London, England. 111-12, Aria Erswell, b. 17 July 1833, London, England, married (2nd wife) Orson Hosea MCCLAFLIN, died North Royalton, Ohio 5 February 1895. 111-13, Clara Betsey ERSWELL, b. 1 January 1835, New York City, married William Parker RICE 1 November 1857, Cuyahoga County, died 21 October 1920, North Freedom, Wisconsin. 111-14, Charles ERSWELL, b. 22 February 1837 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, married Alma A. I noticed that you have answered a number of PHILLIPS family queries for Huron Co., Ohio. I am related to the PHILLIPS family through Andsell whose widow is buried in the Boughton Cemetery (P.709 of the Huron Co. Cemetery Inscriptions Publications). As a matter of information, Andsell is buried in an unmarked grave in the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Hope Twp., Barry Co., MI. He died while visiting relatives in the area. My question is as to Andsell's ancestry - is he related to Ezekiel, the pioneer? Also, are the other PHILLIPS in that cemetery related?

Ken Shute Look Up Results - There are no ERSWELLs in our History of the Fire Lands book, but there are 14 listed in the Index to our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book, six in our 1870 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio, and four listed in our Birth Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio. You can view the Cemetery Index on the HCC/OGS home page (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron). What particular ERSWELL(s) are you interested in?

Ken Shute Look Up Results - In checking our Huron County, Ohio publications it appears that there was the Ezekial PHILLIPS family living in Hartland Twp, and the Andsell PHILLIPS family (apparently) living in Norwich Twp. I was unable to find a definite connection between these two families. The Andsell PHILLIPS Family: In our Cemetery Inscriptions book we find, on page 710, Boughton Cemetery, Norwich Twp: Mercy PHILLIPS, w/o Andsell PHILLIPS, d. 22 Dec 1854 age 68y 9m. Also on page 710, same cemetery: Section A - Row 6. 6 Ruth PHILLIPS, d/o L. & E. PHILLIPS, d. 1 Jul 1839 age 16d. 7 John PHILLIPS, d. 27 Feb 1844 age 44y 8m 13d. Electa, w/o John PHILLIPS, d. 3 Aug 1843 age 37y 9m 1d. The foregoing named PHILLIPS members could very well be related to Andsell & Mercy PHILLIPS, based on the proximity of their burial locations, but I could find nothing else to confirm this. Our Early Estate Index of Huron County, Ohio Court Records, 1812-1852, lists a John PHILLIPS, Estate, Dec 1844. Sources: Probate Docket #1; p. 222. Common Pleas Journal #8, p. 119. Packet (original papers which still exist). If this John PHILLIPS is the same as the John PHILLIPS listed on page 710 of the Cemetery Inscriptions book, and if you could obtain these documents, it might shed further light on the relationship between John and Andsell. Ancestry.com gives the pedigree for an Ansel Foster PHILLIPS, going back to Ansel (Andsell) PHILLIPS and Mercy DRAPER. Ansel Foster PHILLIPS was b. 10 Oct 1869 in Huon County, Ohio. He d. 30 Jun 1927 in Rutland Twp, Barry County, Michigan (the same county you mentioned where Andsell PHILLIPS was buried while visiting relatives in the area). Ansel Foster PHILLIPS m. Margaret Alvira SMITH. Parents of Ansel Foster were Alvin Eugene PHILLIPS and Delia Gertrude SNYDER. Parents of Alvin Eugene were Nathaniel PHILLIPS and Nancy Ann DEYOS. Parents of Nathaniel were Ansel (Andsell) PHILLIPS and Mercy DRAPER. Ancestry.com also gives the following under War of 1812 Service Records-Andsell PHILLIPS, Batt'n Light Inf., New York Mil. Rank at Induction- Fifer. Rank at Discharge: Fifer. The Ezekial PHILLIPS Family- Ezekial and Maria SMITH PHILLIPS had nine children, five of whom were still living in 1879. Of the nine children, the daughters' names included Alma, Abi, Harriet, Amy, Almira, and Dorcas; the sons' names included Phriend and Canarius (the yougest). In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, we read that Ezekial PHILLIPS came to Hartland Twp from Ontario County, NY in 1830. He died in Hartland in July 1856. His widow (Maria) lived with her son-in-law, Parley K. POST. She died Oct. 1, 1877 at age 87. Five of their nine children were still living in 1879;: Mrs. POST (Amy) in Hartland; Mrs. HOPPOCK (Alma) and Mrs. BURGESS (Almira) in Wisconsin; Mrs. John CLAWSON (Dorcas) in Clarksfield (Twp?); and C.N. in Michigan. In Henry Timman's Just Like Old Times (JLOT), Book 3, Page 60 we find an article that mentions the triple wedding of Alma, Abi, and Harriet PHILLIPS on Sept. 4, 1837. They were the chldren of Ezekial and Maria PHILLIPS who settled in 1830 at the "Hartland Five Points" in Hartland Twp. Alma married Daniel D. HOPPOCK, Abi married Robert GRIBBEN, and Harriet married Eben STONE. Abi died a year after her marriage at age 23 and is buried with her parents. The HOPPOCKs later moved to Wisconsin. Also In JLOT, Book 4, Page 32, there is mention of the youngest son of Ezekial and Maria PHILLIPS named Canarius. He came to Hartland Twp from Greene County, NY in 1831. He joined many other settlers of the area in the 1849 gold rush in California. He married Alzina JAMES of Hartland Ridge. They had no children. Canarius died in 1909. Our Cemetery Inscriptions book lists the following in Five Points Cemetery (also known as the PHILLIPS Cemetery) in Hartland Twp. Page 190. 6 Abi GRIBBEN, w/o Robert GRIBBEN, d/o Ezekial & Mariah PHILLIPS, d. 1 Jul 1838 age 23y 4m 18d. 7 George W. GRIBBEN, s/o Robert & Abi GRIBBEN, 1838-1895 (GAR). 9 Ezekial PHILLIPS d. 1856 age 64. 10 Maria Smith PHILLIPS w/o Ezekial PHILLIPS d. 1 Oct 1877 age 86y 3m 22d. 11 Phriend PHILLIPS, s/o Ezekial & Maria PHILLIPS d. "at Portland in Sandusky Bay on board the schooner Liguia," 14 Jul 1832 age 19y 6m 11d. I don't know how much of the above you already have, but maybe it can serve as a framework for further research as to whether there's any connection or not between the two families.

Thomas Neel Look Up Results - The following article appeared in the Lyme Lines, Vol. 12, No. 2, Feb. 1985, page 4. Lyme Lines is the newsletter of Lyme Village, a complex of historical buildings near Bellevue in northwestern Huron County. "Former New London Hotel Added To National Register Recently The GREGORY House in New London was added to the National Register of Historic Places during 1984. Located at 1 East Main Street, the large, three-story brick building was built in 1873 after a fire destroyed the original frame building, known as the American House, the preceding year. Albert A. POWERS was given the contract for putting up the new structure. Albert PERKINS, with a team of horses, hauled the yellow brick from a kiln on the Huron-Ashland County Line Road. One of the workers who wheeled the brick and mud for the walls was the father of Jay F. LANING, who later became a Congressman. When the building was completed, the upper two stories were used as the GREGORY Hotel. The proprietors were C.W. GREGORY and Mr. VAN HORN, who gave a party to celebrate the opening of their new hotel and the New Year of 1874. The ground floor contained a dry goods store. In 1875, since there was no fresh produce for sale nearby, the GREGORY House had its own garden. For a number of years the structure was known as the WHITE Hotel, which was not always open. In July 1902, the local post office was moved into the first floor corner room. In 1908 some of the crumbling foundation stones were replaced and the foundation generally repaired. During the 1970's, the second floor of the former GREGORY House was made over into apartments. The Inn restaurant, Larry's Sports Shop, a laundromat and a dry cleaning establishment occupied the ground floor until recently. From 1828, when the Holiday family came to Kingsley's Corner, as New London was known in early times, there has been a tavern on the northeast corner of Clarksfield and Rochester Streets, now known as North Main and East Main Streets. It is said that Lorton HOLIDAY started to erect a hotel, or tavern, on the site; that Peter HOLIDAY finished it and then hired Lorton to manage it for him. It faced the west and is referred to in old deeds as "Holidays Tavern." This original structure may have been built of logs. During the period encompassing the Civil War, a frame building was erected on the site and this was known as the American House. This is the building that burned during the wee morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 17, 1872. A fire of unknown origin broke out in Dr. MCCLELLAN's store on the north side of Rochester Street and every building in the entire block, all being built of frame construction, were destroyed. The lower floor of the hotel had contained GREGORY and VAN HORN's dry goods store, Dr. RAWSON's dental office and the post office. There were living quarters on the second floor. New London is admittedly out of the usual range of the "Lyme Lines," but we are always pleased to learn of any Huron County structure being admitted to the prestigious list known as the National Register of Historic Places. The GREGORY House has had a long and colorful existence and we hope it will stand for many long years to come. Information from the History of New London, Ohio, by Helen R. Foskett." The above article was dated 1985. The New London Inn and the other businesses in the old GREGORY House building closed or moved to other locations in town. The late Barney THOMAS, a former mayor of New London, started the Box Office Restaurant in the building. Much exterior and interior work was done to renovate the building along its original lines. Although the restaurant was well publicized in area newspapers, and they ran advertisement in Ohio Magazine and elsewhere, the customers did not come, and the restaurant went under, so to speak. Barney prepared a nice booklet on the history of the GREGORY House corner which was given to the New London Area Historical Society. We (the Historical Society) moved our museum to the former News Centre location just east of the GREGORY House about April 1st. We are still unpacking and I couldn't quite put my hands on the GREGORY House story. It will be some months before we get everything organized again. About two years ago, a local restaurant, "J Patrick's" moved into the GREGORY House building, and they are becoming quite popular, bringing many visitors into town to eat dinner. There are several apartments on the second floor of the building. I think the third floor still needs quite a bit of work although I see lights up there from time to time. As a side note, the construction photograph of the GREGORY House in 1873, after the fire had leveled the block the year before, was owned by Mrs. Andrew Snyder east of New London. I'm not certain who has it now. My father copied it nearly 20 years ago and it has appeared in various publications. This is the earliest photograph we have of downtown New London to our knowledge. No view of the village has been located previous to the 1872 fire, although it is quite probable that photographs were taken. Norwalk, for example, has photographs that date to the 1850's. If any of you out in computer land have pre-1872 New London store building photographs in your family album and didn't realize that nobody here in New London had any, please send copies! Since none of us know what to look for, we would have to identify them by the store signs.

It's a little complicated but here goes. John COURTRIGHT first shows up for sure when he married in 1797 to Mary Clark (don't laugh!) in the Stillwater Church Sussex Co., NJ. Their daughter, Sarah, was born in 1798, however her baptism wasn't recorded until 8 years later at the Minisink Dutch Reformed Church, along w/ a lot of other late entries. Most were connected to the John KORTRIGHT/Susanna KITTLE clan, including WESTFALLs & DECKERs. (John & Susanna baptized a son in Minnisink in 1780). Then, in 1800, John shows up in the census for Beaver Co., PA, that's near Pittsburgh & was just formed from Washington Co., PA that year. A Thomas CORTWRIGHT was in Greene Co., PA a few years later. That county was also formed from Washington Co.,PA. (more on him in another note). In 1800, John had a wife & 2 kids listed, which would be Sarah, born 1798, & Jacob V., born 1799,although he gets younger in the later census records. They stayed in Beaver Co. until 1818 when they moved just across the state line into Columbiana Co., OH. Interestingly, that's the same year the Coshocton CORTRIGHTs made their move. John was last in the 1830 Jefferson Co., OH census. His son, Jacob V., was still in Columbiana but in 1850 he moved to Huron Co. The WESTFALLs & FIGLEYs were all in on these moves. In fact in 1850 Jacob V. was living next door to the WESTFALLs & DECKERs. Jacob's sister, Rebecca, the youngest, moved to the Fort Wayne IN area in 1855 & another brother moved to CA, but the rest stayed in OH. John's son, William, married Mary SERGENT, who is possibly the d/o Thomas SERGENT & Naomi WESTFALL. The counties I've found them in so far include Athens, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, Huron, Jefferson, Putnam, Seneca & Tuscarawas.

In attempting to break down a brick wall I am looking for the marriage name of my gg-grandfather's sister. This could prove to be a problem. All I know is that her first name was listed as Carrie in a bio about her sister and brother-in-law. So I guess possible given names could be Catherine, Caroline, or Carolyn, or maybe it's just Carrie. The last name could also be confusing. It seems my family spelled it different every time they wrote it: SCHENK, SCHANK, SHANK and I have recently seen it as SCHENCK. If anyone could see if they could find Carrie's marriage, I would greatly appreciate it! Here's what else I know: I believe Carrie's parents were Franz SCHENK And Helen (maiden name unknown). Carrie and her siblings were all born in Germany (all the obits and bios of the siblings say Germany but one obit says Alsace-Lorraine Germany so I suspect that it was actually France) as Helen died before they came to the U.S. I don't have a birthdate for Carrie but I do for her siblings. They are: Frank b. 1835 (my gg-grandfather), Benjamin b. 1837, Elry b. 1840, Josephine b. 1844, and Agatha b. 1846. The family came to the U.S. about 1850. First went to Sandusky. Then moved to Huron Co. The family attended St Sebastian's Catholic in Bismarck, Ohio and many are buried there. Some of the family changed the spelling of the name to SCHANK, and my part of the family went to SHANK. I am not aware of any part of my family staying with SCHENK but that doesn't mean they didn't because I recently found my g-grandfather's marriage record and the name was spelled SCHENCK - I had never seen the second "c" in the name before in reference to my family.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I found a few bits and pieces regarding a Carrie/Caroline SHANK in our Huron County, Ohio publications which might or might not relate to your SHANK (& variations) family. In our Huron County, Ohio Marriages by Scheuer Publications I find- Caroline SHANK m. Andrew HOWK 24 April 1866, Book 2, Page 9. I couldn't find anything else on Andrew HOWK, except I did find a Jacob HOWK listed as a Blacksmith for Company I, 3rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (page 108, Roster of Soldiers, Civil War, History of the Firelands, by W. W. Williams, 1879). You also mention seeing a Carrie (SHANK) in a bio about her sister and brother-in-law. This might be the same as the reference you cite, but in our History of Huron County, Ohio by A.J. Baughman, 1909, I see in Volume 2, Page 348, a biographical sketch on Mathias CLAUS which refers to the SHANK family, including Carrie SHANK. The bio mentions that Mathias married Josephine SHANK 2 Jan 1867. Josephine was the daughter of Frank and Helen SHANK of Sherman Township. Josephine was born in Germany 14 Feb 1846 and came to America with her father at age 18. They settled in Norwich Township where the father died at age 75. The mother had died in Germany years before at age 42. Frank and Helen SHANK were parents of six children, four of whom were still living as of 1909. The two oldest sons, Frank and Benjamin, died earlier. Of the others, Elias lives in Norwich Township; Josephine is the wife of Mathias CLAUS; Carrie is living in Fremont and Agnes in Tiffin. To follow up the above, in our Atlas of 1873 for Huron County, Ohio, there is listed the following property owners- B. SHANK (possibly Benjamin), Norwich Twp, page 29, section 3, lot 22. E. SHANK (possibly Elias), Norwich Twp, page 29, section 3, lots 11 & 12. F. SHANK, Jr. (possibly Frank, Jr.). Our Atlas of 1891 for Huron County, Ohio shows- Frank SHANK, Norwich Twp, page 31, section 3, lots 22, 12, 13, & 30.

My ggg grandparents lived in Ashland County when gg grandfather was born. They were Israel and Louisiana (Lucy Ann) (HELTMAN) STALEY, marr 3 Jun 1847 Ashland Co by J.D. Benedict, M.G. Children born were: Joseph (my gg grandfather) b. 6 Dec 1849, Almyra b. 1851/52, Mary Ann b. 1855/56, and Jeremiah H. b. April 1859. Joseph married Mary RICKARD 17 Sep 1874 Ashland Co. and shortly thereafter they moved to Southwest Wisconsin (Green, Lafayette and Grant counties). Almyra married A.M. WILLIAMS. Mary Ann married Dallas DEAN and later William N. CORNWELL. Jeremiah became Dr. Jeremiah H. STEALY and married Emma SULLIVAN and then Zara ANDERSON. I'm hoping to find Israel's family, as he just disappeared after Lucy died in 1868. The children were all living with maternal grandparents (Joseph) Andrew and Catherine (GOLDMAN) HELTMAN in the 1870 census, in Ashland, Ashland Co., OH.
