I have found on a website a reference to Marinda BRADLEY being married to Daniel HEMENWAY (b. 30 Jan 1800, d 7 Jan 1871). Marinda was married to Marshall JOHNSON, who died in 1855, according to several refernces we've found in Wakeman. I am wondering if Marinda, a widow, might have married a widower, Daniel HEMENWAY, later? I don't seem to be able to narrow down the dates any further than after 1855 and before 1871.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992, shows no record of a marriage between a Mrs. Marinda/Miranda BRADLEY JOHNSON and a Daniel HEMENWAY. However, it does show the following- Marshall JOHNSON m. Miranda BRADLEY 21 Oct 1820 (old book 1, page 60) Note- In the History of the Fire Lands by W.W. Williams, 1879, there is mention on page 189 that this was the first marriage in Wakeman Township, that it took place at the house of Abram BRONSON, and that Marinda BRADLEY was a relative of the BRONSON family. It also mentions that this couple raised a family of 13 children. Charles HEMENWAY m. Sarah A. BRADLEY 11 Oct 1854 (old book 3, page 378). Note- Ancestry.com shows the spouse of Charles HEMENWAY was Sarah Ann BRADLEY, and that his parents were Daniel HEMENWAY and Marinda (HEMENWAY). Also, the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscription book, on page 430 for Grove Street Cemetery, New London Township, lists "Mir(i)nda B. HEMENWAY, w/o Daniel HEMENWAY, d. 8 Feb 1862 age 65y 2m 10d." Buried close by is "Daniel HEMENWAY d. 7 Jan 1871 age 70y 11m 8d." Unfortunately, neither the Ancestry.com reference, nor the Cemetery Inscription reference gives the maiden name of this Marinda/Mir(i)nda. The Death Index for Huron County, Ohio, 1867-1908, lists- Marinda JOHNSON d. 03/13/1873, Vol. 1, Page 30. Daniel HEMINGWAY d. 01/08/1871, Vol. 1, Page 30. Note- if this Marinda JOHNSON is the same as Marinda BRADLEY JOHNSON, it would appear she is a different person from the Mir(i)nda B. HEMENWAY, w/o Daniel HEMENWAY, who d. 8 Feb 1862. The 1870 Census Index for Huron County, OH lists a Daniel HEMENWAY, but not a Marinda (BRADLEY) (HEMENWAY), among the HEMENWAYs listed for Census Page 378A, New London Township. Read first name, age and place of birth- Almira, 44, OH. C.V., 32, OH. Daniel, 70, MA. Ella, 14, OH. Estella, 2, OH. Joseph, 45, MA. Lavina, 35, NY. Maney, 37, MA. Mary, 15, OH. Orin, 13, OH. Orlina, 26, OH. The 1870 Census Index for Huron County, OH, also lists a Marinda JOHNSON among those JOHNSONs appearing on Census Page 605A for Wakeman Township. Read first name, age, and place of birth- Marinda, 68, CT. Edna, 13, OH. Lillie, 6, OH. Martin, 36, OH. Sarah A., 43, OH. While it would seem that the Marinda/Miranda BRADLEY who m. Marshall JOHNSON is not the same person who m. Daniel HEMENWAY, it's also tempting to believe that the Sarah A. BRADLEY, who married Charles HEMENWAY, is somehow related to this same Marinda/Miranda BRADLEY. Sech a conundrum!

I am trying to prove the parentage of Hiram ODELL, believed born in Norwalk, OH., between 1837 and 1841, to Samuel and Phoebe MCCORMICK ODELL. His gravestone, located in Sandusky Co, lists his birth as 1837. His pension records list his age in 1866 as 25 and born in Norwalk. That would make the date 1841. Are there any such records for this era? Does anyone have a suggestion how to find this? He is listed in later years in census records with Samuel and Phoebe, but he was an adult at that time, and it does not prove they were his parents. I know there is a Hiram ODELL who resided in Huron Co. at this time, but he would have been a brother to Samuel.

I am searching for a John (Jack) W. (middle name unknown) WAGNER, my paternal grandfather who is part of our lost family history. We understand he may have been from Springfield, County of Clark, Ohio. He was 26 years old in 1914, living and working as an electrical engineer or electrical contractor on the electric power plant in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada. He was probably born in 1888. I was researching today and came across the Huron County Ohio - Index of Cemetery Inscriptions (W Surnames Only). In the list was WAGNER, Jack William, page number 647. The name certainly does fit, maybe I have been looking for my grandfather in the wrong county in Ohio. Would you be able to give me any information; what city in Huron County is he buried and name of cemetery; if available his birth and death dates and any other information you have.

I would appreciate a look up in the Cemetery Inscription book. My grandfather's sister, her husband and 4 kids lived in Norwalk for many years. I don't know the exact years but do know they were there in 1920 and probably from as early as 1900 to 1940. I have found 5 possible references in the online cemetery inscription index. They are- SNYDER, Anna A. page 387; SNYDER, Anna L. 212; SNYDER, Anna E. 334; SNYDER, Annie M. 387; SNYDER, Jacob H. 382. My family was Jewish (doesn't guarantee they were buried in a Jewish Cemetery - if there even is one). Anna was born about 1879 in Odessa, Russia and Jacob was born in Poland/Russia in about 1873. I know this next bit of information isn't pertinent but they had four kids (Ida, Louis born 1907, Mary born 1910, Bonnie (Bernard) born 1913 -- I believe all were born in Norwalk).

I have yet to find Stockworth. A son, John Thomas WILSON, was born in Lincolnshire England, according to his marriage license, and he was born in 1886, the year his father and sister immigrated. Mother Jane and two boys (Herbert and John) apparently came the next year. Mother was from Swanland, England according to her obituary. Swanland is in Yorkshire, just north of Lincolnshire. All of their obituaries (except Herbert) are on the Huron County web page. Look under Biographies/Obituaries/Index.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - Here are some bits and pieces which may or may not be of help in trying to resolve the cemetery inscription date of death of Eliza SMITH (1820) with her marriage date of 1823. From our Marriage Book it appears that Clark A. SMITH married twice- first to Eliza CRAYON on 1Sep 1823, then to Rachel LEWIS on 29 Dec 1825. If this is your Clark A. SMITH each time, it would suggest that Eliza died 1823-1825 vs. 1820, unless there was a divorce. However, in a biography on Sherman SMITH, brother to Clark Austin, found in our History of the Firelands, it mentions his brother C. Austin was born in CT August, 1797 and died in New London Twp August 1827. It goes on to say "His widow (interpreted to mean the widow of C. Austin vs that of Sherman), now a widow of Squire BARRETT, lives in Huron Ohio." Which suggests that Eliza CRAYON SMITH was living at the time of this book's publication in 1879. Also, in the History of the Firelands, we see that three SMITH brothers (Sherman, Clark A., and Major) came to Huron County in the fall of 1815. Their parents were Elisha and Margaret MATHEWS SMITH. This family relocated from Bristol, CT to Springfield, Clarke County, OH in 1810, but three years later the parents had died. The brothers had a sister named Betsey who stayed behind in Springfield until she was brought from Springfield later to Huron County. All three brothers were buried in Butterfield Cemetery, New London Twp according to the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book. Page 403, Row 6. 10 Clark A. Betsey died May 25, 1839. (Note in the above that the widow of C. Austin was (in 1879) the widow of "Squire BARRETT" and living in Huron County. In the History of the Firelands there are- a. Information on the three SMITH brothers on page 277. b. A lengthy biograpical sketch on Mr. and Mrs. Sherman SMITH, with pictures, on page 280. c. A biographical sketch on Mr. and Mrs. Zelotus BARETT, with pictures, on page 366 facing. Additionally, in Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, Book 3, Page 37 there is found an article which, in part, describes the family of the three SMITH brothers, and describes the role played by Sherman in the War of 1812. Perhaps it would be worth your while to request copies of the two marriage licenses for Clark A. SMITH to see if it would furnish any additional leads. On the other hand, maybe there's a possibility that the inscription date of death (1820) for Eliza SMITH was in error.

I am interested in immigration to Huron County from England. My ancestors are Henry and Mary Ann (CROSS) PLOWRIGHT. They were married in Upwell, Norfolk, England March 1850 and left soon afterwards for USA as they are found on the 1850 Huron Co OH census. Why? Did they have relatives or friends in Huron Co OH? Anyone else with ancestors from Norfolk England? The naturalization papers for Henry PLOWRIGHT were found in Huron Co Court records 25 years ago.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- In checking some of my Huron County, Ohio publications, I find an Elder R.W. Vining as the "first settled pastor" of the Baptist Church in Townsend Twp, beginning in 1837. This Baptist Church apparently no longer exists. There are also some VININGs (but not R.W. VINING) buried in the Townsend Center Cemetery in Townsend Twp.These are the only VININGs listed in the Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions Index. I can't offer you anything on any church records which might have survived until today. You might check the holdings of the Norwalk Public Library. Go to the web page for HCC/OGS (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron) and click on Libraries and Museums. Perhaps someone on this Mail List may be able to help you also in this regard. Details- 1. History of the Fire Lands, by W. W. Williams, 1879. Page 248, Townsend Township. Under "Religious" and "The Baptist Church." This item mentions that the first settled pastor of the Baptist Church was Elder R.W. VINING, who began his labors in 1837. This Baptist Church was first organized in Penfield, New York, in 1816, with five original members, all of whom relocated to Townsend Twp in 1817. It was originally called "The Peace Baptist Church." After relocation , the earliest meetings were held at the homes of the members. In 1850, a (Baptist) church building was erected at the (Townsend) Center and cost about $500.00. 2. Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions. The following VININGs are buried at the Townsend Center Cemetery, Townsend Twp. This cemetery is located on Angling Road, a short distance southeast of Hartland Center Road at East Townsend. Page 856. Row 10-- North Side of Drive. 2. "Duane" VINING. 3 Ebenezer VINING, d. 21 May 1886 age 77y 1m 4d. Julia Gray, his wife, d. 8 Jul 1888 age 72y 1m. Louis Duane, d. 7 Apr 1875 age 1y 7m 24d. 3. Just Like Old Times by Henry Timman, published originally in the Norwalk Reflector. Book VI, Page 45-- "How East Townsend got its name," dated Nov. 6, 1987. This article mentions that East Townsend used to be referred to as Townsend Center. The area at U.S. 20 and Hartland Center Rd. was platted in 1848 as "Townsend Center Village." The public square area, where the Town Hall and fire department are located was donated by Kneeland and Caroline Townsend of Milan in 1848. A school building and two churches-- Methodist and Baptist-- were built in the square. Both are gone now, the Baptist Church having been used as an auto repair shop by George Stacey after it had been moved south across U.S. 20.

They had 3 children born in Ohio James, Mary & George before moving to Michigan, sometime in the 1870s. Does anybody know what happened to the rest of the RYAN family?
