Is there any mention in your records of a John ROWCLIFFE, who with sons William,John,James,George and daughter Mary Anne arrived in Huron Co.1836 from Devon, England and, I am told, bought 140 acres on the Sandusky River. He died 1 July 1862.

Ken Shute Loolup Results-- I could find only one reference to a John ROWCLIFF in all of our Huron County, Ohio publications. In fact, the surname ROWCLIFF appears only one other time in our other Huron County books, and that one appears to be unrelated to your ROWCLIFF family. A further quick check of some books we have on counties adjacent to Huron County turned up the same negative results. From a map we have, the Sandusky River runs generally north to south through Sandusky and Seneca Counties. The one reference we found was in our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, 1997. North Monroeville Cemetery, Ridgefield Township. Page 811. Row 28. 6 Charles M. ROWCLIFF, s/o S. & G. Ken Shute Lookup Results-- The other reference to a ROWCLIFF I mentioned occurred in our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. It mentioned a James ROWCLIFF. Details- Page 165. In section on the History of Norwalk Township, article on the history of the Congregational Church. The article mentions that the Church was organized at Norwalk Dec. 19, 1867, and in April, 1868 the land on which the Church now stands was purchased. It was completed in early 1871, and dedicated Feb. 2, 1871. James ROWCLIFF was named as one of the first three deacons of the Church, and as one of the first five trustees. Checking out James ROWCLIFF in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992, I find two marriages for a James ROWCLIFF- James ROURCLIFFE m. Betsey MANAHAN 1 Jan 1852. James ROWCLIFF m. Eliza C. WELCH 10 Apr 1883. Other ROWCLIFF Marriages- Mary Ann ROWCLIFF m. James FORD 6 Mar 1844. Emily R. ROWCLIFF m. Eugene E. STEWART 15 Mar 1882. Ken Shute Lookup Results-- As a starting point, I looked at the cemetery inscription information for Mary MEYER, and nearby burials, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk Township, from our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book, and found- Page 594. Section 9-- Along Ave G-- Row 2. 24 Dina KOHLMEYER SICKINGER (no dates). 25 Wilhelmina Rosamond SICKINGER 1900-1975. 26 Casper B. SICKINGER (no dates). 27 John A. KOHLMEYER (no dates). 28 Mary MEYER (no dates). 29 Marjorie Anne KOHLMEYER d/o Emil & Augusta KOHLMEYER d. 1922 age 30d. Our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992, show- John A.V. KOHLMEYER m. Diana MEYER 22 Jun 1882. Mrs. Dina KOHLMEYER m. Casper SICKINGER 9 Jun 1896. If we accept that Dina is an alternate spelling for Diana (or vice versa), it would seem that your Mary MEYER could be related to this Diana MEYER, later to be known as "Dina KOHLMEYER SICKINGER." Unfortunately, I was unable to verify a birth year for this Mary MEYER. In addition to the above marriages, I found a marriage of a John A. KOLLMEYER in Cuyahoga (County), Ohio from our online IGI link- John A. KOLLMEYER m. Cecilia N. CATON 30 Aug 1853, Cuyahoga, OH. I found birth dates for two of those cited in the cemetery Inscriptions above. This was in our Birth Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio, by HCC/OGS, 1998. Wilhelmina Rosa SICKINGER b. 10/12/1900. Vol. 1, Page 179. Emil Frederick KOHLMEYER b. 12/12/1886. Viol. 2, Page 74. The births of several MARY MEYER/MEYERS were also noted- Mary MEYER b. 09/25/1873. Vol. 1, Page 90. Mary L. MEYER b. 06/21/1893. Vol. 3, Page 21. Mary A.. MEYERS b. 12/14/1879. Vol. 1, Page 163. Mary E. MEYERS b. 04/27/1877. Vol. 1, page 146. In our Death Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio, I see- John KOHLMYER d. 03/01/1885. Vol. 1, Page 115. Cath. KOHLMYER d. 03/01/1885. Vol. 1, Page 115. Of interest is this Cath. Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I found the marriage of Arthur W. CURTIS to Lucia RUSSELL. 3, Aug, 1836, in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992, but not his second marriage to Mary DUDLEY. He did not appear in our 1870 Census Index of Huron County, Ohio. A brief item in our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879, indicates Arthur left Huron County, Ohio and "went west" about 1859. If so, this leaves open the possibility that Arthur W. CURTIS married Mary DUDLEY elsewhere than Huron County, Ohio. Details. Page 330. Section on Fitchville Township. In a discussion of the CURTISS family- "Arthur W. (CURTISS) took up lot eighteen in section three, but went west about 20 years ago (ca 1859). He married Lucia RUSSELL. There were three daughters in this family: Rhoda (Mrs. Calvin Parker), Arvilla (Mrs. L. KNOPP), and Sophronia (Mrs. Chauncy Crane). All three are dead, as are also all of the brothers, except Arthur."

Jacob settling in Huron County, Leonard settling in Richland [later Ashland, and no, they didn't move] county. I answered a query from a lady in Florida on CRONINGER, and found out she was a decendant of Jacob and her sister lives in Plymouth, about 6 miles from me!!!! Ohhh, what a small world we live in. This article mentions the names of a MILLER family who lived in Bismark, Sherman Township. These named MILLER might possibly relate to descendents of your MILLER family. The article identifies Bismark as the home of St. Sebastian's Catholic Church, and the home of German Catholics who settled there in the early 1830s. The article describes the tragic, accidental poisoning of a Joseph MILLER, his brother Frank, Frank's wife, and her father John JOHNS, all of whom moved from Bismark to a farm near Winimac, Indiana in 1903 where the accidental poisoning occurred on Nov. 24, 1903. Reportedly, Mrs. Frank MILLER had preserved some sardines in a mustard and vinegar combination, and then added a celery seed preparation to the dish, after a suggestion by a friend. It was thought that the celery seed was tainted. After eating the sardines, John and Frank MILLER died on Nov. 24th, while Mrs.MILLER and her father lived three days longer.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - In addition to the cemetery inscription information that Rebecca Williams sent you, here are a few other references- 1. Birth Index, 1867-1908, Huron County, Ohio. Oliver A. BARBER b. 06/04/1881. (Write to Probate Court, Huron County Courthouse for a copy of the birth certificate. The web site (sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron) that Rebecca Williams gave you will give you the address and the cost.) 2. 1880 Census Index, Huron County, Ohio. Isaac BARBER, Norwich Twp, 164A. 3. History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879. Page 107, Military Roster of Soldiers (Civil War). Under Co. B, 3rd OVC: Private Theodore BARBER, veteran volunteer; mustered out with company. (If this Theodore BARBER is the same as your Theodore P. BARBER, then it would seem unlikely that he would be the brother of the above Oliver A. BARBER, since Oliver was born 1881, while this Theodore BARBER was probably born, at the latest, 1848 or earlier.) The cemetery inscription information for the BARBERs that Rebecca Williams gave you suggests that Isaac and Sarah were the parents of Oliver A. BARBER. Does this match with the names of the parents you have for Theodore P. BARBER-or do you have this information yet?

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- With your 1850 Census record for the RIGGS/BARBER family as a starting point, I did some more digging and found that Edward C. RIGGS was married to three women (sequentially, not concurrently), including the Mary cited in the 1850 record. Our Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions book shows, for Townsend Center Cemetery, Townsend Township- Page 856. Row 4-- North Side of Drive. E.C. RIGGS 1804-1894. Jane, his wife, 1809-1843. Mary J., his wife, 1817-1866. Sarah, his wife, 1824-1917. Netty, d/o E.C. and M.J. RIGGS, b. & d. 1858. Florence, d/o J.L. & A. RIGGS, b. & d. 1863. Matthew S., 1829-1850. Samuel L. 1833-1863. John L. 1839-1863, sons of E.C. & J. RIGGS. It appears that the "Mary" in your 1850 Census record is Mary Jane PEARL, and no slouch in the marriage department either. Our Huron County, Ohio Marriage book shows the following- Mary Jane PEARL m. Abel BARBER 28 Oct 1838. Mrs. Mary Jane BARBER m. Edward C. RIGGS 29 Jan 1846. Mary Jane PEARL m. Andrew J. GOODEL 15 Apr 1858. (Note- I looked for "Mary Janes" who married a BARBER in our marriage book, 1815-1854. The above Mary Jane PEARL was the only one who fit as far as first and middle names, and age at marriage. The only other candidate, which I decided wasn't a very good one, was a "Mary BARBER" (middle name not given) who married an Ansel BARBER 23 Mar 1830--too early for a marriage date.) Also, from the online IGI web site (www.familysearch.org), I find- Mary Jane PEARL m. Isaac G. SHERMAN 26 Feb 1862 in Morrow (Co.?), Ohio. I could not find the marriage of either Jane or Sarah with Edward C. RIGGS, but I note that Jane died in 1843, preceding the marriage of Mrs. Mary Jane BARBER to Edward C. RIGGS. I could not find the death of Abel BARBER. If the Mary Jane PEARLs mentioned above are the same person, and since her marriages to GOODEL and SHERMAN occur after the marriage to Edward C. RIGGS , and before his death in 1894, it might suggest Mary Jane and Edward C. were divorced between 1846-1858. Other bits and pieces on Edward C. RIGGS- From our Huron County, Ohio Death Index, 1867-1908- E.C. RIGGS d. 08/23/1894. Vol. 2- Page 169. In our History of the Fire Lands, by W.W. Williams, 1879- Page 247. Section on Townsend Township. "E.C. RIGGS and family ......settled in 1834... on lot 50." (Presumably, this may have included his wife "Jane, 1809-1843.") From our 1873 and 1891 Atlases, Huron County, Ohio, I see Edward C. RIGGS owned land in Townsend Township-- section 3, lots 50, 51 & 52 in 1873; and section 3, lots 46, 50, 51, 70 & 71 in 1891. Finally, our 1870 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio, shows the following RIGGS on census page 574A, Townsend Township. Read first name, age and place of birth. Edward C., 66, NY Sarah, 40, England Charles, 19, OH George E., 5/12, OH George, 17, OH Martin, 13, OH Sarah, 24, OH Thomas, 28, OH William, 15, OH. I realize this doesn't solve your question regarding Oliver and Theodore BARBER, but maybe it offers some stepping stones in that direction.

Ken Shute Lookup Results-- I had no luck in finding a marriage between a Mary Jane BUCK and a __PEARL in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992. If Mary Jane had been married to a PEARL before her marriage to Abel BARBER, I wonder a bit why she was listed in our marriage book as just Mary Jane PEARL in her marriage to Abel BARBER, and not Mrs. Mary Jane PEARL. Yet, in your 1850 census of the Edward C. RIGGS household you show a Mary PEARL, age 14 (b. ca 1836), suggesting she was the daughter of the union of Mary Jane and a PEARL. Conceivably, this Mary PEARL (b. ca 1836) could be the Mary Jane PEARL who married Andrew J. GOODEL 15 April 1858. The name would work, as well as the age at time of marriage. This latter marriage appears in both our Huron County, Ohio marriage book, and the IGI online web site (www.familysearch.org). This site shows the birthyear and birthplace of Mary Jane PEARL as ca 1837, and "Huron, Ohio." As the tag line of the old joke goes--there's got to be a pony somewhere under all this!

I have been trying for two years now to solve the puzzle of my Benjamin BARTLETT. I received the (as yet unverified) information below a couple of days ago. Prior to this point all I had was the name "Benjamin BARTLETT and Polly PIDGE, of Eaton County, Michigan". The names and dates below were compiled by an older generation researching the BURPEE family. This is what I have- Benjamin BARTLETT, born Dec 10, 1770, Died May 17, 1849. Married Polly PIGG (PIDGE). Polly was born Feb 18, 1767 and died July 17, 1843. Children of Polly and Benjamin- Clarissa BARTLETT, b. March 8, 1797, d. July 24, 1849. Daniel BARTLETT, born Jan 21, 1801., d. May 6, 1847. Cynthia BARTLETT, (twin) b. May 6, 1804 d. Nov. 29, 1844. (my ggg grandmother) Hulda BARTLETT, (twin) b. May 6, 1804 Wyrum BARTLETT. Benjamin BARTLETT I was previously given the information that Cynthia's father Benjamin "was of Eaton County, Mich." In researching in Eaton County, I did find a Benjamin BARTLETT who was born Sept. 29, 1811 in Washington County, Ohio and died Nov. 27, 1885 in Eaton County, Michigan. But he was much too young to be Cynthia's father. Since it appears that Cynthia had a brother named Benjamin, could this be him? Right time frame, and right county of birth.. This particular Benjamin was also in Huron County the same time Cynthia and her husband Pearson BURPEE was there. His wife Eunice HUNT was the sister of Cynthia's daughter's husband (James HUNT). But I have no proof that the Benjamin BARTLETT that was in Huron County and Eaton County is the brother of Cynthia. I know that Benjamin and Polly (PIGG) BARTLETT were in Washington County, Ohio in 1822, when their daughter Cynthia married Pearson BURPEE. I find a Benjamin BARTLETT in Washington County, Ohio as early as 1800 and as late as 1830 (on the census). I am uncertain whether it is the right one or not. Cynthia and PEARSON bought land in Huron County, Ohio in 1829, where they both died. He died Sept. 17, 1838. She remarried to a David WRIGHT and died November 29, 1844. They are buried in Peru Center (School House) Cemetery at Peru, Huron County, Ohio. Pearson BURPEE's family was originally from Massachusetts, then migrated to Vermont, then to New York, before going to Washington County, Ohio. I have followed similar paths looking for information on Benjamin and Polly. With no luck at all. Benjamin and Polly have been my stumbling block for about 2 years now. However, all this time I had her name as PIDGE. It is now my understanding that is an alternate spelling. I have never looked for the surname PIGG. I have absolutely no clues as to parents for either of them. No clues as to where they might have originally been from. And no clues as to where they were when they died. Maybe Washington County, Ohio, maybe Huron County, Ohio, and maybe Eaton County, Michigan. I know this is terribly long for a query, but I wanted to give you the information that I had. If anyone can help me with this puzzle, I would be very grateful.

I do know of a marriage of Ashbel B. JOHNSON to Maria R. LYON on September 1st, 1841 in Huron County. I wondered if the book gives any more information on this couple. Ashbel probably remarried to a certain Abigail, who seems to be his wife in the 1850 census, then living in Fitchville township. Ashbel is then 30 years old, Abigail is 33. There is a 7 year old child in the family, named Rolla. Apparently, Ashbel's parents, Allen (59 years) and Elizabeth (56 years) JOHNSON are living with them in the same house, as is a certain 17 year old Lucien Mead, whose relationship to the JOHNSONs is yet unknown. I hope you can help me out with Ashbel's marriages. Maybe you can also check for Ashbel or his father, Allen, in the 1845 plat book.

The five year old would suggest that Michael and Kierney were married by 1865 or earlier. Michael would have been born ca 1830, while Kierney would gave been born ca 1835. Also, Michael and Kierney are listed as being born in Germany (Baden). Since a cemetery inscription (page 508 of the Cemetery Inscriptions book) states Kunigunda (=Kierney) HILTZ arrived in this country from Baden Baden Germany in 1842 (when she would have been about seven years old) it seems that Kunigunda=Kierney married Michael in the U.S. rather than Germany. Details- The following BAILEYs are listed on census page 529 for Monroe Village in the 1870 Census Index. Read first name, age, and place of birth. Fred, _, OH Hannah, 05, OH Henry, 03, OH Josephine, 3/12, OH Kierney, 35, Baden Mary, 3/12, OH Michael, 40, Baden. In the 1880 Census Index for Huron County, Ohio- Michael BAILEY, Ridgefield Twp, 211A.
