Would you have any information about William CARTER, or William HORTON? William HORTON died Oct 1848, and William CARTER prior to 1850 Census.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - You didn't indicate if CARTER & HORTON died in Huron County, Ohio. I checked all 30 of our Huron County, Ohio publications and didn't find a William CARTER or William HORTON who died in Huron County, Ohio prior to 1850. This check included our Cemetery Inscriptions book. In our Fire Lands book there was a William H. HORTON who was a Private in Company A, 3rd O.V.C. But this would have been in the 1860's. Also in our Fire Lands book there is a reference (page 449) to a William CARTER and family who moved into Florence Township, Erie County, Ohio from New York in the summer of 1818 and settled at the "forks of the river," above Birmingham. William CARTER died there in 1853. A William HORTON appeared in the 1880 Census Index of Huron County,Ohio. He was listed for Norwalk City, Ward 4, page 325A, but this would have been sometime later than the 1848 death date you gave. Finally, in our Gateway to the West, Vol. 2, page 28, we find, under the heading of Lorain County, Ohio Marriages, 1822-1830, a William CARTER marrying an Anna VAN ALSDALL (VANNASDOLL), 1-24-1828.

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I checked our Huron County, Ohio publications for any possible references to the parents of a Joseph L. CRAWFORD without success. Also, I have no information on the availability of church records, 1819-1846 in the locations you mention. That covers quite a bit of ground.

Could you let me know if there is a book or records available for a marriage between William BURNES and Helen BISSELL in 1836? I was wondering if the license application or license, itself, might contain another family name as a witness? If any such records exist, should I write to the Huron Cty. library for further information? (I originally found the marriage entry in the Rootsweb Archives).

Ken Shute Look Up Results - I found two marriages of a William BURNES in our Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992, and a reference to a Helen BISSELL in our 1996 Ancestral Card File by HCC/OGS. I could find nothing else in our Huron County, Ohio Publications. The marriages- William BURNES m. Helen BISSEL 1 Jan 1837, Old book 1, page 322. William BURNES m. Hariet CRAIGG 2 Aug 1851, Old book 3, page 241. The 1996 Ancestral Card File- Name of Ancestor- Helen BISSELL. Name of HCC/OGS member submitting this name- Jean MYERS, 5673 SR 162 East RD1, New London, OH 44851-9419. The marriage records might have additional useful information. The Probate Court, Huron County Courthouse, 2 East Main St., Norwalk, Ohio 44857 is reported to hold marriage records from 1815 to the present (see HCC/OGS home page sites.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron). The Norwalk Public Library is also supposed to have marriage records before 1840. Debbie Orth, who works for the Norwalk Public Library, may be able to get you a copy of the William BURNES marriage record of 1837. Her email address is [email protected].

My great grandfather is David BARNES who lived in the Berlin Heights area in the late 1800, early 1900's. From what I understand through family lore is he assisted the police in apprehending criminals and was eventually asked to become a railroad detective in Elyria. He was subsequently murdered by a vagrant, the crime is still unsolved. He lived in Berlin Heights with his wife, daughters Jane and Harriet, identical twins Verne (my grandfather) and Verle. I would appreciate any information you could provide, even the names of books that could help me in my search. Is there a historical society where I may find archives with pictures? I've really enjoyed the countless hours my father and I have spent discussing Grandpa David and I know it would mean so much to him to have additional information or pictures.

I am trying to help a relative who has a scarcity of information on his mother's side of the family. I'd love to unearth any tidbits anyone might have. He is elderly, resides in Kentucky, and I'm sure doesn't have a computer. He was kind enough to sort through some family knowledge on my behalf, and I'd love to help him out in return. Here is what I know: Harriet M. HOYTE from Rockcreek, Ashtabula married Juleus William HOYT (born in N. Monroville, Ohio) on December 13, 1874. I don't know Harriet's parents' names. She was born in 1849. Place of birth--unknown. Died March 2, 1917 in Rockcreek, Ashtabula. It is thought that Harriet was a schoolteacher in the Ashtabula area. Can anyone confirm? Also curious as to what Juleus' profession was. His parents were Wm. B. HOYT and Mary Ann WILLARD. Harriet and Juleus moved to Kansas in the 1870's. Any record of siblings?

Yesterday I requested information about my ancestor, William HOWES, from Alyce. She was able to locate his death date as 9 Feb 1894. Apparently there was no record of Louisa. Alyce didn't mention whether a copy of the death certificate would list his parents, assuming of course, someone who knew was even around at the time. I think all his surviving children were probably in Australia at the time. Could you let me know please? Could you also provide me with details of how to get a certificate and cost in US dollars? Alyce suggested I contact you for a look in the 1891 Huron County Atlas to see if he was a land owner. She also suggested you may be able to locate where he is buried or if he appeared in city directories. I'd be appreciative if you could research what you could find on this man. William and his family have some amazing stories between them. As well as what I mentioned to Alyce, two of the sons were shipwrecked in the Russian Arctic for two years before rescue.

Just on the chance that you get interested in the outcome of some of the lookups .. I received copies of divorce papers between Silas WOOLEY and Betsey Ann MEAD. In the course of the proceedings, she files an afidavit that at the time of her marriage to Silas WOOLEY (1856) she was known as Betsy Ann WOLVERTON. She married Alvah WOLVERTON in 1846. Although she uses her maiden name when she marries Silas. Anyway, that mystery is solved. However, I'm still working on the original question... that of determining the relationship between Joel and Silas WOOLEY and who their parents were... I've decided I need to find obituaries for their children and look again for obits for them. Can you give me any guidance on availability of obituaries in Huron and Ashland counties? -- probably Ruggles in Ashland; and Fitchville, New London, and Greenwich townships in Huron county.

I am still on the trail of the SHIPMAN clan. Charles, brother of Anthony and son of William, lived in Clarksfield in 1850, then in Richardson County Nebraska in 1860. He served in the Civil War, came back to Clarksfield, lived in with brother Anthony, then to Norwalk, where he died in 1871. I thought it might have been in the hospital there. He is buried in East Creek Cemetery, New London, with a GAR marker. I am trying to find out what unit he might have served in; and if his family joined him in Norwalk; and if he had been wounded. I know you have some census and some military info, so is it possible for you to find him listed? I have not found him in Ohio Civil War records so he must have joined a Nebraska unit.

I visited your very good and interesting Huron County web site, but would like more information. I am a descendant of George SHEFFIELD (indeed my name is George SHEFFIELD CAMPBELL) who is listed as an "early settler" of 1817 in your Lyme Twp section. I am also most likely a descendant of the Francis STRONG and John BAKER of 1815 who are also listed since George SHEFFIELD married Thurza BAKER who was the daughter of John BAKER and Susanna STRONG. I have a six-page newspaper article from 1876 about the SHEFFIELD family written by a Forbie BAKER. If you don't have it I could send it to you as an attachment, including more information about their descendants. If anyone is doing research in your genealogical society on the SHEFFIELDs I would like to contact him to exchange information and also trace descendants. The same for the BAKERs and STRONGs. You may know that Susanna STRONG was the great granddaughter of Joseph STRONG, from whom the late Diana, Princess of Wales, also descended. Also, my great grandfather, John KEYES CAMPBELL, married Betsey SHEFFIELD, the daughter of John SHEFFIELD, and lived in Lyme. I would be very interested if you have any information about him. He died March 12, 1873, but I don't if in Lyme. I could not find him in your cemetery list. Perhaps you have an obituary? NOTE- Promenadeg. 22-4-12, A-1170 Vienna, Austria

I'm trying to trace a cousin of my Grandfather Walter T TOMPKINS or my Grandmother Sarah Margretta MCKINNEY. It may be my Grandfather's cousin because his mother, Alvira Mercy STARR TOMPKINS, was born and possibly raised in Greenfield, Huron Co, OH. All I have is two postals (post cards) from 1912. Both cards are signed by Cami BRANT. She lived in Norwalk, OH. I do not know if BRANT is her maiden name or a married name. Do you have anything from this time frame and from this town?

I am trying to find a Great Grandparent by the name of Joseph RUFF. His wife was Nancy. Beyond that I have no idea, just a hunch that her last name may have been BLAKENSHIP. They had a son and lived in VA in 1850. The son was born in 1826. His name was Charles RUFF. I find a Joseph in the 1820 census in VA. I think he came from Ohio and I know Huron was a point of settlement for German families. My other thought is the Columbus area. Even if I can not find a specific link I wonder about RUFF's in Huron CO.

I do not know his parents. He married Frances REMLEY on 20 Nov 1855 in Huron Co. He was a printer by trade. They were Catholic and had 9 children. None of them where named Joseph. I just joined the mailing list and am introducing myself. My full name is George SHEFFIELD CAMPBELL and I descended from the George SHEFFIELD b. 4-4-1786 in Stonington, CT, and d. 23-8-1834 in Norwalk, who is listed as an "early settler" of 1817 in Lyme Twp in Huron. In 1813 he married Betsy WOODWARD with whom he had only one surviving child, George W. SHEFFIELD, who had descendants living in Ohio about 100 years ago. If you are descended from him I would like to contact you. After Betsy's death he married Thurza (or Thursa) BAKER, sister of Hiram BAKER, with whom he had the children: Betsey, Sarah, George, and James. All of them left Ohio. Betsey married John KEYES CAMPBELL in Sandusky on 20-8-1846 and they lived in the Lyme area. They had 4 children: George (my grandfather), Elsie, Alice, and Mary. All of them left Ohio after John's death 12-3-1873. I have considerable information about these people but am always looking for more, so would like to exchange information with anyone who is interested. Joseph STRONG b. Northamption, CT, 2-12-1672, d. Coventry, CT, 23-12-1763 married Sarah ALLEN. Their son Phineas STRONG wed Mary PARKER. Their son Ozias STRONG wed Susanna WEST. Their daughter Susanna STRONG wed John BAKER. Their daughter Thirza BAKER wed George SHEFFIELD above. Someone in this line came to Huron/Lyme at some point. I have no additional information about them and would like any information available. As you may know, the late Dianna, Princess of Wales, descended from Joseph STRONG, so if you are descendants of any of these people you are a distant relative of Dianna's. If interested, I could send you the lineage.

Does anyone have access to marriage records for Huron County? I need to find a record for William G. HERL and Mary E. TRACY. They were married on 12 Jan 1878. I mailed a request to Huron County, but they said there is no record there. I found the date on the IGI at the LDS site, but they don't list a source for the date. I am trying to find out any information on Mary E. TRACY and her ancestors. The Cemetery Inscriptions say she was born in 1860 and died in 1956, but I can't find anything on her to get any information on her ancestors. I ordered a Death Cert. and hopefully that will have some information.

I am researching my g-g-grandfather, Benjamin Smith CAMPBELL, born 25 Jan 1773 in Bedford, NH, and came to Ohio about 1820 with his brother David, who founded the Sandusky Clarion Newspaper about then. Benjamin and David had a newspaper in NY, but Benjamin did not go to Sandusky. He died 21 Feb 1852 and his wife Sally 12 Aug 1858. Both are buried in the Bellevue Cemetery. I know a lot about him until he left NY and came to Ohio, then I know nothing. I assume that he was active in Huron County and would like to ask you if you can find him in any of your books?

I have found a couple of TRACY families in Huron County. I am just hoping that one or all of them tie into my Mary E TRACY b 1860. In the 1880 Huron census, there is the family of John TRACY age 50 and his wife Elen/Ella TURNER age 32. Children are John b 1870, Patrick, Maryann b 1872, Thomas, Michael and James. Looking through the IGI I found Palmer TRACY m. M. M. DUNN with a daughter Eva May TRACY. Palmer TRACY m. Sarah Jane DUNN with daughter Hariet Amelia b 1872 John Tracy m. Ellen FLANIGAN with son Patrick TRACY b 1874 There are several other TRACYs out there on the IGI from Huron Co, I only copied the ones that looked like they might give me some leads. So if anyone else is looking into this family, definitely check out the IGI batch numbers that Jane sent. I have gone on to look at some of my other counties and have found several marriage dates that I didn't have before (and I use Family Search all the time for clues!) This is really a great tool!

Would you please do another cemetery lookup for me? I am looking for Samuel BROWN, and there are several in the index, but his wife was "Ella" in the 1880 census. I note a Samuel and an Eleanor on p. 173, so am hoping these are the two I am looking for.

Does anyone have access to the index to the 1870 census Index? I have access to the census but not the index. If you do have access to the index, could you send me the references on the following families- HERL HEARL HERALD HURRELL I would really appreciate your help! I can't seem to pull up an 1870 index on the LDS catalog either and I don't know where else to turn for the index. I can do the census lookups myself, so I don't need to bother anyone with that.

Tom Neel Lookup Results-- You might try contacting Shirley Cawrse in New London, and she should be able to assist you. I believe that Delamater must have been named after Gardner Allison who was a Civil War soldier in Fitchville. Fitchville Cemetery records, Section 5, Lot 382, show- Buzzard, Vira W., 1897-1975 Buzzard, Thelma A., 1905-1974 Carnahan, Edith Allison 1888-1946 Allison, Gardner William 1845-1915 (GAR) [bur 6 Apr 1915] Allison, Harriett L., 1856-1935 [d. 4 Jun 1935 cem rec] Thelma Buzzard was my neighbor in the 60's and 70's. Gardner Allison was her grandfather. Frances Delamater was a close relative to her, and I believe that Shirley is the daughter of Frances. She should have the family straight.
