On the 1850 census of Greenwich township, p 820, Nicholas ALLEN is recorded as a member of the James MCCRAY household. I suspect that Celinda McCRAY, age 40, is a daughter of Nicholas. Also living in the household was Mary RITTER, age 85, born NH. I would like to learn more about the McCRAY family and their relationship to Nicholas ALLEN and Mary RITTER.

Can anyone help us with this family which I believe lived (and died?) in Greenwich. Squire KRIFFIN's parents were James KRIFFIN and Polly CONKLIN. Squire's wife, Sally CALLAN, came from Tompkins County, NY. The following writeup about Sally appeared in "Western Reserve Pioneer Women": "Mrs. Squires Kniffin (Sally Callan) came to Greenwich from Ithica, N.Y. She was a plump, rosy little woman, ever bright and cheerful. Many times has she grated corn to make mush to fill the hungry little mouths - when it was immpossible to reach the distant mill - until the measure of meal was exhausted." They were parents to 12 children of which we only know the names of 4, William, Sarah Jane, Alanson and Charles. This daughter's (Sarah Jane, our ancestor) obituary follows: Sarah Jane KNIFFIN was born in Greenwich, Ohio, February 20, 1840, and departed this life November 7, 1932 at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 13 days. She was the daughter of Squire and Sally KNIFFIN, being the fourth child of a family of twelve children. She was united in marriage to Oscar TRAVIS, Jan. 1st, 1858, who died twelve years ago. To this union were born six children, four girls and two boys, Lillie PLOUGH, Chas. TRAVIS, James TRAVIS, Etta MORTON, Daisy WAGGONER, all preceding her in death one daughter, Mrs. Hattie MYERS surviving. The deceased spent most of her long life in this vicinity. She was a kind and loving mother and known as Grandma TRAVIS to all who knew her. Any help In finding their dates/places of death and children would be greatly appreciated.

Researcher: Bill Woolley

Date posted: Thursday, September 10, 1998

I am new to the list. I am having difficulty locating ancestors in Huron Co. Here's the info, I hope someone can help. What I do know is that a man named S.K. MANN was living in Norwalk in 1882, the date his daughter Annabelle (Nannie B.) MANN was married to Walter UPINGTON, a local jeweler/optician at S.K. MANN'S home on State Street. I have copy of the actual newspaper article regarding the wedding. I have searched the 1850 and 1860 census and found an S.K. MANN in Crawford Co. in both of those censuses. He is not listed in Crawford Co. in the 1870 census. A family story is that Annabelle was a member of or eligible for membership in the DAR related back to Abraham CLARK. I have found no listing for her in the DAR membership lists. She and her husband traveled to New Mexico in 1883 and I have a copy of an article that appeared in The Chronicle. The letter is dated January 15th,1883 and is written to the editor and addresses all their friends in Norwalk. Walter and Annabelle's daughter, Helene UPINGTON was born in Norwalk on Feb. 20, 1895. Can anyone help with any information on these people?

A few weeks ago Ken Shute provided me with th following information from the History of Huron County, Ohio by A.J. Baughman, 1909. The last sentence indicates that parents Jacob & Sarah HYATT TRAVIS relocated to Greenwich in 1862. Does anyone know what happened to them? Are they buried in Greenwich or did they move on to another location?

Would anyone have information about Edward FITZGERALD (may also have been called Edward GERALD) his wife, Abigail KIMBALL who came to Huron County from New Hampshire following the War of 1812. Any information about Edward or any FITZGERALD in Huron County that early would help me immensely. Many thanks in advance.

A few weeks ago Ken Shute provided me with information that Hyatt TRAVIS was born on the 10th of August, 1839, in New York City, a son of Jacob and Sarah (HYATT) TRAVIS. In December of (1860) he came to Greenwich (Huron County, Ohio) where his brother Oscar had arrived six years previously, while the parents and the remaining members of the family followed him in 1862. The last sentence indicates that parents Jacob & Sarah (HYATT) TRAVIS relocated to Greenwich in 1862. Does anyone know what happened to them? Are they buried in Greenwich or did they move on to another location? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
