I am seeking any information on John W. RAPP(b. 11 Mar 1887/88, d. 23 Feb 1914) who was my ggrandfather. He died in a boiler explosion at the Bellevue Illuminating & Power Co. on the above date. This explosion knocked out power all over town during a blizzard. This much I got from the Bellevue Gazette(weekly, dated 26 Feb 1914). I would like to find out more about him, and his family if possible. His parents as listed on his death certificate are: William RAPP and Anna DELLINGER, but the news article lists them as John W. and Susan RAPP. They had five children: I. John W. married on 3 Sep 1903 to Anna WONGLER** (b. 10 Feb 1887 d. 30 Nov 1956) II. Mildred (b. 7 Feb 1908 d. Sep 1973) II. Ralph (b. 18 Oct 1909 d. 8 Sep 1981) My grandfather II. Clinton (b. 12 Aug 1912 d. abt 1981?) II. Clayton (b. 12 Aug 1912 d. 4 Aug 1914, less than 6 months after his father died.) I. Roy (possibly married to Josephine MCDARMETT I. Bertha (Mrs. Unknown Good) I. Ethel I. Unknown female (Mrs. John ORWIG)** Anna WONGLER RAPP remarried 1 Oct 1919 to Edward KURTZ. They lived in the family home at 333 Belle Ave until her death. Does anyone have any information on my family? There are no Rapp's currently listed in the Bellevue phone book. I am hoping to return to Bellevue this summer to conduct more research

I have chased a BUTLER family from cental NY that appear on the Fitchville, Huron County, Ohio 1850 census. The parents were Jonathan BUTLER and wife Lucina (WRIGHT) Butler. They had two grown sons with them. The sons had families. The sons names were Adin and Edward. I found a will in the county court house for Jonathan BUTLER. He wrote and filed it in 1848 at the court house. He died before the end of 1854. The will was settled in 1855. Son Adin's wife is listed as widow of Adin. Edward was the executor. I have not been able to find the burial place of Jonathan & wife Lucina BUTLER. Son Edward and his family appear on the 1860 Fitchville Federal Census. We are seeking information on the burial place of Jonathan and Lucina BUTLER. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Date posted: Tuesday, February 3, 1998

What is known is that Archie Paul BLISS married Etta WASHBURN and they had two daughters, Mary (~1914-5) and Bernice (5/23/1916). When Bernice was 2 in 1919, Etta passed away. Etta's mother, Mary (maiden name unknown) WASHBURN, put the two girls in an orphanage where they were "raised". The 1900 Census from *Greenwich Township* shows the following: James Franklin BLISS, b. 7/1848, OH, m. 9/29/1883, OH + Margaret Ann MOHLER / MOLER, b. 9/1861, OH (Margaret's mother's name was Rebecca MOHLER, b. 9/1832, Penn) Hermie BLISS (daughter), b. 4/1886, OH Donna Bliss, b. 5/1888, OH Archie BLISS, b. 6/1890, OH, d. ~1976, OH Girthie (?) BLISS, b. 10/1892, OH Earl BLISS, b. 10/1897, OH Garnet BLISS (male), b. 9/1899, OH Descendancy info I have put together is: Archie Paul BLISS, b. 6/1890, OH, d. ~1976, OH + Etta May WASHBURN, b. 10/1895, OH, d. 2/16/1919, OH at 23 yrs. Mary BLISS, b. ~1914-5, OH + "Tub" SCOTT 3 children, most likely still living Bernice May BLISS, b. 5/23/1916, OH, d. 2/4/1985, OH + Elmer Ray SAURER, b. 10/2/1907, OH, d. 12/7/1992, OH One child, my father ME! ;) b. OH, raised in HI Also, another interesting thing that my father said was that Archie was a "foundling".........literally left on the BLISS family doorstep when he was an infant. This has *not* been confirmed for me in any other way. My father said that this info came from Etta's mother, not Archie himself. The 1900 Census has Archie listed as the "son" of Jonathan BLISS (b. 5/3/1801, Mass) and Margaret INSCHO (b. OH). The only info I have on Etta is: Mr. WASHBURN, b. ~1815-35, NY + Mrs., b. ~1815-35, OH Jay WASHBURN, b. 4/1852, OH, d. 5/9/1922, OH + Mary, b. 2/1852, OH (at least 3 children names are unknown to me) Howard WASHBURN, b. 8/1879, OH Etta May WASHBURN, b. 10/1895, OH, d. 2/16/1919, OH at 23 yrs. (Descendants and other info listed above) This was found in the 1900 Census for Greenwich Township, just a few pages away from the listing for Archie. How many orphanages were in existence from ~1919 to early 1930's? Is there a place where I could obtain residents' records from old orphanages? I know that there are *many* Washburn families, but I can't help but wonder if my ancestors could possibly be those that Greenwich's "Washburn Cemetary" was named after.

Surnames: BLODGETT, GEISLER, KINGSBURY, SHEDD, SMITH, WILLIAMS
Researcher: Edwin J. "Ed" SMITH
Email: [email protected]
Date posted: Tuesday, February 3, 1998

Hello to all. I am Edwin J. "Ed" Smith and I have the happy, happy task of researching the SMITH surname! The Huron Co surnames I am searching are as follows: SMITH, KINGSBURY, SHEDD, GEISLER, and BLODGETT. My great grandfather was Edwin SMITH b in Huron Co in Aug 1840. He is enumerated in the 1850 U.S. Cen (pop) for OH in Sherman Twp, Huron Co with his parents and eight siblings. He m Diantha GEISLER in 1862 in DeKalb Co, IN. She was the daughter of John GEISLER and Almira BLODGETT who were also in the 1850 census for Huron Co. They all moved to DeKalb Co, IN probably in 1851-2. Edwin's parents were Darius SMITH and Julia KINGSBURY. Darius was b 1807 in Jefferson Co, NY, and Julia was b in 1809 in NY also. Julia along with her parents Jonathan KINGSBURY and 2nd wife Sally WILLIAMS, arrived in Peru Twp in Apr 1819 where Jonathan died in Aug 1819. This information is stated in the book Kingsbury Genealogy compiled by Frank M. Kingsbury and published in 1962. I can find no trace of this KINGSBURY family until the m of Julia to Darius in 1827. I can find no mention of Darius and Julia from their m in 1827 until they purchased land in Sherman Twp in 1848 from Jackson SMITH (can find no connection, yet, of these two SMITH families.) Darius alone sold this land in July 1852 and moved to DeKalb Co, IN. I believe Julia d between Sep 1850 and Jul 1852 but again cannot confirm this. They were enumerated in the 1850 Sherman Twp census along with nine of their ten children. Julia had a brother, Jesse KINGSBURY, who lived in Peru Twp, too. Darius's parents were David SMITH (b ca1784 RI) and Polly SHEDD (b ca1787 NH). They were m in Jefferson Co, NY, 1804/5 and moved with their children to Peru Twp about 1825. This information is in the book Daniel Shed Genealogy, published in 1921. I believe that David is enumerated in the 1830 census in Peru Twp. They had eleven children and moved to DeKalb Co, IN, sometime around 1840/1. The GEISLER and BLODGETT families lived in Ridgefield Twp around Webb Settlement and attended the Free Will Baptist Church in that settlement. I give all this information in the hope that a fellow researcher will recognize one of these names. Especially the SMITH and KINGSBURY lines. Willing to exchange infor that I have. Thanks and again I apologize for my error.

I recently did a Huron Co. Lookup in my Beers & Co. Comm. Biographical Record of Huron Co., OH (Chicago 1894) for a Jim Hannum who is searching the KELVEY and EARL lines. There isn't much information there but a nice tie in with the Lowell family: pg.292 under the biographical sketch of Ethan LOWELL "He was married December 30, 1854 to Martha McKELVEY, who was born March 31, 1831, at Plymouth, Ohio. Her grandfather William McKELVEY was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. In 1811 he came to the Firelands of Ohio, and settled in Greenfield township, Huron but sometime afterward, when the news of Hull's treachery and capitulation of Detroit was heralded through the settlements, William McKELVEY removerd his family to Trumbull county, and he and his son William joined the army. When peace was declared they returned to Greenfield, Huron county. Matthew McKELVEY, father of Mrs. LOWELL, was born January 30, 1794 in Westmoreland county, Penn. He married Nancy ADAMS, who was born July 30, 1798 at Marlboro VT, a daughter of Bildad ADAMS, an early settler of Huron county, Ohio. Matthew McKELVEY opened a general store near Greenfield Center; the first dry-goods store at Plymouth, Ohio, was established by him, and for a long time he was the leading merchant in a wide district where today thousands are engaged in trade."

I'm not a Rowland researcher at all, but somewhere I picked up a Revolutionary War pension record for Luke ROWLAND. It's actually a widow's pension, #9271, for Elizabeth ROWLAND, on her husband's service in Connecticut. He resided in Canaan CT at the time of service; was in and out of service several times between 1776 and 1777. Luke ROWLAND applied 27 Aug 1832 by filing an affidavit in the Town of Seneca, Ontario Co NY. He was in Battle of White Plains, etc.; tells his whole military story. He signed by X mark. Seba SQUIRES and Richard M. BAYLY of the Town of Seneca were witnesses to the affidavit. I'm reading this quickly; hope I don't get facts wrong. But in an affidavit filed in Huron Co OH, in Ruggles, the widow Elizabeth ROWLAND on 25 Oct 1839 states that her husband had died in Clarksfield, Huron Co., on 9 Mar 1839. Says her husband had been pensioned in 1833. She had no record of their marriage, but that she had a daughter Olive, married to Abner CASE, age 57 years, living now in Illinois. Lewis B. STURGES and Whitney SQUIRE were witnesses. Elizabeth signed by X mark. Oh, Elizabeth said she was age 75 on the 14th day of March last. There is another affidavit by Emeline SMITH, of Clarksfield, age 48, filed 23 Mar 1850, who says that her mother Elizabeth ROWLAND died 15 Dec 1849 in New London, Huron Co., age 86 years. She thinks the children should get the balance of the pension 'arrears'. I bet the government thought better! She signed her name. No witnesses, but John SHERMAN JP attested for her. Then a document produced by Henry BROWN, Clerk of Court of Common Pleas for Huron Co., who states that Elizabeth left six children, James ROWLAND, David ROWLAND, Esther ROWLAND, Olive CASE, Emeline SMITH, and Betsey CLAWSON. This one was signed 21 Mar 1850. So, you have a clue to some action in common pleas - estate, partition, or something. Anyway, this isn't Levi ROWLAND, but I think these guys were all related. Just was interesting.

I do not know about your family, but am well versed on IRISH history. Most of the immigrants said that they were from CO. Cork because that was the main port for the leaving during the Great Famine. There is a wonderful museum there with a bronze statue of a sister and her two brothers. The sister is looking back toward Ireland and the smaller brothers are looking out toward the sea. There is a copy of this on Ellis Island, in part sponsored by the Kennedys. The actual name of the town where the harbor is is Cobh pronounced Cove.

I found Andrew CLARK in the 1840 census of Huron County in Ruggles Township. As I mentioned earlier, it did not list the names of his children or his wife. I learned of Priscilla name through a deed on some property they sold in Ruggles to Erastus RATHBUN. John CLARK is mentioned on a promissory note that Andrew and he signed, and is part of the probate record of Andrew CLARK. My Grandmother, Francis ( Morton) CLARK, and a cousin, had said that John CLARK came from Ireland- ( possibly County Cork), but I have not been able to verify that. I had assumed that he, Priscilla, and John had all come from Ireland. The information you have indicates that Andrew CLARK came to America much earlier (1819 or earlier) I will try to contact Mrs Catherine G. Kellogg for additional information about what she knows about the Andrew CLARK. John CLARK married Margaret STOVER about 1844. John died before 1850 - since he is not in the 1850 census. Margaret CLARK is listed in the 1850 census with her three children, Elizabeth 5, and the twins, Wilson L. and George W. I am a descendent of George W. CLARK. The twins were born July 4, 1849 Margaret later married, and George W. did not get along well with his stepfather - so he went and lived with his Aunt Susan. George W. CLARK married Matilda E. does anyone have access to records that list information about who were members of a particular regiment? An aunt left undocumented notes about one of my 2nd great-grandfathers and I would like to confirm them. He was from Seneca Co., but they do not have his regiment on their web page. The following is what she left: "Levi COFFMAN was commissioned a 1st Lt. in company D, 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 19 Oct. 1861 and was honorably discharged on 20 Sept. 1864." I think it is kind of strange that a farmer with no known prior service would have been commissioned a 1st Lt.

If any are of interest, let me know and I'll send what information I have. The following are my grandmother's sister's family: Harry Franklin & Elizabeth (SNYDER) BROOKS, Were the parents of Raymond Lee and Zetta May (SYBRANDT). Raymond married Margaret Elizabeth (HOLMES), then Hazel Grove (COOKE). The children of Raymond and Hazel were: Beverly Jane, Bonnie Jean, and Melody Ann. As of 1973, Beverly had married William Francis FLAHERTY and they had a son Brian Lee, but the other two daughters were unmarried. Harry Franklin's parents were Gardiner and Flora (COLE) BROOKS. Land Records in the county Recorder's office show that Theobolt UMLER and Jacob FINKLER bought 40 acres of land on the southwest corner of Section Line Road 30 and Bismark Road in 1836. This is south of the center of Sherman Township. Six months later, FINKLER sold 30 acres of this ground to Joseph RUFFING. They changed boats to traverse the Erie Canal to Buffalo, and then on the lake to Cleveland. From there they traveled through Elyria to Norwalk by wagon. In Norwalk, their only shelter the first night was a barn. After arriving on their farm in Sherman, RUFFING was disappointed that he had not bought land in Cleveland. This is a response from Ruth Reed ([email protected]) Catherine's parents were Joseph NOGGLE (1776-1834) of Canada and Maryanne Unknown (1778 - 1835). Philo BROOKS' Dad was Lemuel (1776-1831) and Philo's mom was Esther SPRAGUE (1779->1823). They also were in Huron County and I believe they are buried at Steuben. Philo(? name was omitted) & wife spent some time in Peru Twp. around the 1850s and 1860s. I see you are researching both the WHEELERS and the BROOKS. I have one bit of information. There was a family of BROOKS who lived in the neighborhood I live in now. My Mother-in-law, Agnes, also grew up here and she often reminesses of her childhood and her neighbors back when. She talks about this family of BROOKS who lived in at the corner of Hettle Rd and Troy Mills Rd, Peru Twp, Huron County. Until recently this house was very bare and no longer livable but owned by another family by the name of WHEELER. Just about a quarter mile from the house is the north boundary of Greenfield Twp. Many of our neighbors still attend the church in Stueben. This is probably some of your family. One other thing she has said about them is that they had a daughter who was crippled and in a wheelchair. She had very little feet and someone would give her the demo shoes from the shoe stores. Agnes would always say what pretty shoes she had and many pairs compared to the rest of the children in the neighborhood in the heart of the depression. She was approximately the same age as Agnes which would make her born about between 1910 and 1920. The house was torn down a couple of years ago and the land is now owned by Eugene Kamann. The barn still stands and is in reasonably good repair. My Mother-in-laws address is: Agnes Reed, PO Box 7, North Fairfield OH 44855. Eugene Kamann was also a neighbor and his address is Troy Mills Rd, Willard, OH 44890. I am sure they could come up with first names, at least, for you.

Anyone on this list have info on Glendower E. BAKER, born circa 14 Sep. 1893, probably in Huron County, to parents J. C. BAKER and Cora B. ASHLEY? This name is the most recent of descendants of James YOUNGS of Huron County that I have in my database, and I would love to connect with his living descendants.
