This is a response from Ken Shute ([email protected]) I checked our Huron County publications and found the following references to the surnames NOGGLE and BROOKS. Hope they may be of some help. 1). Huron County, Ohio, Marriages, Published by Scheuer Publications, Wardsaw, IN, 1992: a. Vol. 1, 1815-1854: David NOGGLE m. Melissa Ann LEWIS 15 Oct 1834. Jacob NOGGLE m. Phoebe Jane GIBBS 25 Oct 1835. Philo BROOKS m. Catharine NOGGLE 28 Dec 1836. b. Vol 2, 1855-1877: George W. NOGGLE m. Emma A. KELSEY 29 Sep 1861. c. Vol 3, 1878-1900: Leonard NOGGLE m. Mary E. MOORE 6 Feb 1883. 2). Plat Book of 1845, Huron County, Ohio: Lemuel S. BROOKS, Greenfield Twp (p. 6), sec. 2, plat 9, 59 acres; sec. 2, plat 15, 100 acres; and sec. 2, plat 16. (Of more than passing interest is that my wife's great great grandfather, Phineas GUTHRIE, has a farm next to Lemuel S. BROOKS in sec. 2, plat 6 with 78.94 acres). I. NOGGLE, Greenfield Twp (p. 45), sec. 1, plat 29. 3). Atlas of 1873, Huron County, Ohio: Philo BROOKS, Fairfield Twp (p. 33), sec. 3, plat 19, 65 3/4 acres; and sec. 3, plat 20, 30 3/4 acres. 4). Havana Business Directory (p. 57): NOGGLE & FELTON, Dealers in Dry Goods, Groceries, Ready-made clothing, Hats, Caps, Boots, Shoes, Furs, Glassware, Queensware, and merchandise. 5). History of the Fire Lands, Comprising Huron and Erie Counties, Ohio, 1879. W.W. Williams: Page 16. Under List of Original Sufferers (in Connecticut firelands), Classified by Towns with the amount of each individual loss: Norwalk (Connecticut)......"Lemuel BROOKS, 287 (pounds), 15 (shillings), 4 (pence). Page 219. "Lemuel BROOKS, one of the prominent early settlers of Greenfield, arrived in the fall of 1817. He was then advanced in life, and had served as an officer in the war of the Revolution, and participated in the battle of Quebec. He died in the year 1831 at the age of ninety years. His wife was formerly Esther SPRAGUE. They had a family of eight children, five of whom are living." Page 221. "Joseph NOGGLE settled in the southwest part of town (Greenfield) in about the year 1826; Jeremiah COLE about the same time where Lewis WOOD now lives." Page 225. Under " Saw Mills" ....."Jacob and David NOGGLE built the Curtis mill about the year 1835." 6). 1880 Census for Huron County, Ohio. Published by the Huron County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society: Page 40. Jacob NOGGLE, Norwalk, 4th Ward, 314C. 7). Just Like Old Times, Book V, 1984-1986. From The Norwalk Reflector, Norwalk, Ohio. By henry Reinier Timman, 1989: Page 42. In the article How the Curtis Mills (Greenfield Township) got their start:......."Mr. Newman owned the mill site for 11 years and sold it in 1836 to David NOGGLE who sold it not long after to Elijah Conger. Apparently the NOGGLES (Jacob and David) built a newer or larger mill, since they paid $500 for 121 acres from Mr. Newman and sold 14 acres to Mr. Conger for $2,500. I might add that $2,500 was a small fortune in 1836, especially considering the great financial panic which swept the country the following year..."

This is a response from Ken Shute ([email protected]). Here are a few items concerning STRIMPLE which I located in our Huron County publications. 1). Plat Book of 1845 for Huron County, Ohio: Andrew STRIMPLE, New Haven Twp (page 66), Section 2, Plat 8, 104 acres. Some surrounding landowners are: I. MILLS, Rudolph SNYDER, C. BREWBAKER, A. NEWMAN, JOHN GROVER, and John KISER. ( I realize this is after Aaron STRIMPLE left New Haven Twp in 1840 for Miflin Twp, Richland County, Ohio, but perhaps Andrew is related, and his neighbors might include some of those who came to New Haven Twp, Huron County with Aaron from New Jersey in 1839.) 2). Huron County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society 1996 Ancestral Card File Index shows Robert & Joyce SMITH, RR 1, 1056 Baseline Rd., Shiloh, Ohio, 44878-9801 also researching STRIMPLE (Aaron, Frank R., George, and Vera Lenore). 3). Index to the Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Huron and Lorain, Ohio. Published by J. H. Beers & Co., Chicago, 1894: The index shows a biographical sketch for Aaron STRIMPLE on page 392. That's the good news. The bad news is I don't own a copy of this book. Maybe fellow mailing- list subscriber George Twaddle ([email protected]) would be able to help you.

This is a response from David Velten ([email protected])Your query is timely because I just ran across this family in the Kuebelberg parish family book. The parents were Joseph LEYES and Agatha HUBER. I'm interested in them because of their son, Peter LEIS. My information is at home, so I'll send it on later. The RUFFINGs and SCHWARTZes, of course, are from Oberbexbach.

My wife's great- grandfather was named A. Dorwin BERRY. We have never verified his full first name. We don't have much information on him. He was born in 1846, probably in Shefford County, Quebec, Canada. He had a sister named Harriet M., born 1842, also in Shefford County, Quebec, Canada, and possibly a younger brother named Samuel. His father's name might have been Samuel. In the 1860 census we find A. Dorwin as a young boy of 14 living with relatives in Ogle County, Illinois. He married Lydia LEE in February, 1870 in Seneca County, Ohio. Later, in the 1870's , he is seen involved with land sales in Seneca County, Ohio. He died in 1883 in Seneca County, Ohio. As an 18/19 year old in 1864/1865 he could have served with Union forces in the Civil War. In checking military records we have yet to locate an A. Dorwin BERRY, but we did find an Almond D. BERRY who was assigned to the Alton Battalion, (later 144th Regiment), Curtis Company, Illinois Volunteer (100 day) Infantry. Almond D. enlisted from Stephenson County, Illinois. The same Almond D. BERRY was married to a Francis BRAYTON in September, 1869 in Cerro Gordo, Iowa. Our quandry: we would like to prove or disprove that A. Dorwin BERRY is one and the same as Almond D. BERRY. We lean to thinking they probably are not, but don't have firm evidence for this belief. If they are the same, it would appear that A. Dorwin married for a second time Lydia LEE, only about five months after marrying Francis BRAYTON. This would be possible only if Francis died, or divorced A. Dorwin in the interim. We can find no death records for Francis BRAYTON in that five month period, which leads us to the possibility of a divorce. But five months seems awfully quick for a divorce to have been finalized. We would welcome hearing from anyone who might have information on annulment/divorce proceedings in the 1860's/1870's in the aforementioned regions of the country.

My ancestor Aaron STRIMPLE (1803 NJ - 1890 Richland Co, OH) in 1839 moved his family from New Jersey to New Haven Township, Huron County, Ohio. Family tradition says four families, a total of 28 people, travelled together, and that the trip took 29 days. Aaron Strimple rented a house in New Haven Township but in 1840 (in time to be counted on the census there) he moved to Miflin Township, Richland County, Ohio. I'm wondering--who else travelled with Aaron and Keziah STRIMPLE from NJ to OH? I'm seeking other families with a similar tradition.

My Brundage KNAPP arrived in Huron County in 1825 or 1826. The 1838 school census for Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio shows Bishop KNAPP with children of school age named Lucy A., Caroline, Clarissa, and Mary E The estate of William B. KNAPP was settled in 1841 in Huron County. My Brundage lived in section 3, Greenwich Township, Huron County, in 1826, in Bronson, Huron County, in 1836, and in Fairfield, Huron County, in 1864. I *think* Bishop is a son of Brundage. Family tradition says Brundage KNAPP had at least 3 wives: Lidda BISHOP, Esther MEAD, and Sally TYLER. That's about the extent of my Knapp knowledge, unfortunately!

Hello! My name is James (Jim) DAVIS and I live in Wenatchee, Washington. I was born in New Haven in 1936, the son of Charles Edward (Ted) DAVIS and Evelyn Gwendoline (Gwen) GRABACH. I just started tracing my roots about 6 months ago and obtained a lot of information during a trip to Norwalk, Tiffin, and Fremont last September. I was very lucky in that many of my ancestors were among the earliest settlers of New Haven township, so I was able to track them through the book "History of the Firelands" by W. W. Williams. A published history of the RUBINS family was also a great help. I have not, however, been so lucky in tracing my paternal grandfather's family. He was Edward Lafayette (Lafe) DAVIS b. March 9, 1872 in PA, d. Sept. 22, 1923 in New Haven, and married Harriet SNYDER Oct. 14, 1896 in New Haven. On his death certificate my grandmother stated that he was the son of Albert DAVIS and Mary SHELL, both from PA. According to Anne Farrell Higgins Wood in " The Story of Most of the Descendants of Edward Rubins, Jr. and Ann Blow" (1973): " Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents." I found an Albert DAVIS married to a lady named Sarah and who had a son named Lafayette in the 1880 census soundex. They lived in Plymouth township of Richland county and their Lafayette was a year older than Edward Lafayette should have been. However, I have not been able to prove or disprove this possible connection. I would greatly appreciate any information about these individuals or suggestions about how to proceed.

It was there that their son Joseph H. KELLER was born in Shelby Settlement. Jacob immigrated with ten other Kellers leaving from LaHarve and landing in Baltimore. In the company were his brothers George and Joseph. There is a Nicholas, age 40, who was on board the same ship. He may be the father but I have no proof. Brothers George and Joseph stayed in Richland Co. while Jacob moved to Huron county where he is listed and an Inn Keeper in the 1850 census. He died in Milan in 1900 and is burried in St. Anthony's cemetary. I would appreciate and help in establishing Jacobs paternity.

My LEIDORF family came from Hessen Germany and settled in Wood and Lucas counties, Ohio. I have also located LEIDORF descendants from German areas similar to mine that settled in Erie and Huron counties. While researching these two families I have found that they both have mentioned an uncle or cousin who had helped them when first arriving in America. This unknown LEIDORF lived in or near Chicago Junction (now Willard, Richmond twp) Huron County, Ohio. I am trying to establish a possible connection to Huron families and at this point feel that a Mr. LEIDORF living in Chicago Junction (perhaps by 1840) may have the key. Any info connecting with the name LEYDORF, LEIDORF, LIEDORFF, LIDRUFF, etc would be appreciated. My ggggg-grandfather's name was Bethuel COLE, and I believe he had three sons that moved to the Norwalk area of Huron Co., OH: David, Bethuel, and Attrusha. David was my gggg-grandfather. Now long after David moved there, the other two brothers moved with their families and lived nearby. David's wife died young, and David went back to New York to join the Shakers. His son Edward took over the farm and eventually traveled to New York to have his father sign over the deed. Edward soon moved to Porter Co., IN, where many of us still live. His sister Carthaette moved there some years later with her husband (Daniel OSBORN) and children. Her daughter, Mary Arville OSBORN married John Conger COLE, Edward's son -- a first cousin marriage. Edward and "Etta" perhaps left behind at least two siblings, Cordelia D. COLE and possibly Arville COLE. I am desperate for further information on these last two. There is a Cordelia COLE from the same period, with a sister Arvilla, living in Shelby Co., IN, but who were daughters of a different COLE, which is well documented -- a very perturbing coincidence! I wish I felt better about my David (father of Hylas, who was "killed by the fall of a tree") and the David who was brother to Bethuel and Attrusha. Despite other evidence to the contrary, I worry over the fact that the naming conventions seem different in the families. Also the fact that another COLE family is located next to Bethuel (Elijah and Lyman) who seem to have no connection. Incidentally, on a hill about one half mile south of me are the graves of John Earl DILLINGHAM and his wife, and a man named BRONSON and another man named WHEELER, all names from Huron Co. North of me about four miles is the town of BURDICK, and two miles north is a farm that once belonged to a Mr. TILLOTSON. Around the bend and down the road west of me, about one half mile is where the last members of the TANNER family lived until two years ago. I think with a little searching I could find more "remains" of old Huron Co. in this gentle area of Indiana. Sincerest regards,

I've been researching the five children of Nicholas and Elizabeth (LIPPERT) DANIEL who immigrated to the United States in the 1850's. Two settled in Seneca Co. OH (Valentine [my Great-grandfather], and Nicholas his brother). The other three settled in Huron county; Frank, John, and Barbara (who married Philip DIEHM). In the 1910 census of Norwich twp, Huron Co. I noticed that several of the family of Frank's children were enumerated in consecutive entries (George, Ben w/ John, Jacob, and Frank). Since all were listed as farmers, this would indicate that they resided on adjacent farms. I noticed a road near Willard OH called "Daniels road". Does anyone know how this road got it's name. Is it because these (or perhaps other) Daniels resided there? Any information would be appreciated. Cheers ... Bob

His wife, Elizabeth Oakley, died "23 Day 1 mo 1865" aged 80 years, 9 months. These stones are engraved in the Quaker calendar style. (1) My father Fred VAN_SCOY had a contract from the Greenwich Township trustees from the mid 1950s to the mid 1980s to mow 4 township cemeteries, including the Washburn Cemetery. I've pulled up Queen Anne's Lace a good many times around most of the stones in all 4 cemeteries! (2) I noticed the mention of a woman named Elizabeth (OAKLEY) CARPENTER. Family reunion material says my Lucy A. (COOPER) MARVIN (1833-1897 Richland County, Ohio) is the daughter of Jacob COOPER (1793-1877) and Lydia OAKLEY (abt 1800 - 1866). (Jacob and Lydia COOPER are buried in London Cemetery, Jackson Township, Richland County, Ohio.) Someone has suggested to me that the marriage of Jacob COOPER to Lydia OAKLEY in Washington County, Ohio, on September 21, 1820 (as reported in "Ohio Marriages" abstracted from "The Old Northwest Genealogy Quarterly" by Marjorie Smith) is that of this couple. So...I'm wondering, do we have any Huron County OAKLEY descendants on this list?

Additional records indicate she was the daughter of Ebenezer HARTWELL, had four children, and probably the sister of John HARTWELL who married Elizabeth SPRAGUE (Nelson's half-sister). She later married Hiram BARNES and nobody knows what happened to Nelson SPRAGUE. I would greatly appreciate any information that would help identify the parents of my grandfather, Edward Lafayette DAVIS. According to his death certificate (information provided by my grandmother), he was born in Blanket Hill, OH on March 9, 1872; his parents were Albert DAVIS and Mary SHELL, both born in PA. However, for the 1900 census he stated that he was born in PA. He married Harriet SNYDER in New Haven twp., Huron County, OH on October 14, 1896 and died on September 22, 1923 in the same place. According to a distant cousin, who published a history of the RUBINS family in 1973, "Edward's parents died young and he was raised by foster parents." But, I don't know where she got that information. I could not find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Mary and a son named Edward or Lafayette in the 1880 census soundex for PA, but did find an Albert DAVIS with a wife named Sarah and a son name Lafayette, all from PA, in the 1880 census soundex for OH. They lived in Plymouth twp., Richland Co., which is only a skip and a jump from New Haven. They reported that Lafayette was nine, but Edward Lafayette was only eight then. Albert and Sarah had six children younger than Lafayette, but my mother says she never heard of any siblings of Edward Lafayette around New Haven. I have sent most of this information to the Richland County Chapter of the OGS and have recently posted it on Richland County's website as a query, but have not received a reply from either yet. Perhaps you can suggest official records that could confirm or refute the possible connection of Edward Lafayette to the Albert DAVIS of Plymouth.

Genealogical roots I have in Huron County include: my grandmother Bernice (BLISS) SAURER (b. 1916, orphaned ~1918, d. 1985), her sister Mary (BLISS) SCOTT (b. ~1914, orphaned ~1918, d. ~1970's-80's), their father Archie Paul BLISS (b. ~1895, d. ~1976, last known address in Huron), and their mother Etta May (WASHBURN) BLISS (b. ~1895, d. ~1918 at age 23). Thanks to the LDS Family History Library I have been able to find an Etta WASHBURN and an Archie BLISS in Greenwich Twp. in the 1900 Census.......however, I am not 100% sure if I have found are the right ones. My father told me that Archie was an infant abandoned on the BLISS family doorstep. He said Etta's mother told his mother that......but this has not been verified in any other way. My father also said that Archie Paul BLISS had remarried 2 or 3 other times after Etta passed away.......and it is likely that there are other BLISS cousins we have and don't know about. After Etta died her mother put Bernice and Mary into an orphanage (presumably in the Huron area) where they stayed until they were either 13 or 16. I am very interested in finding out information from this orphanage too.....but first I need to find out the names and addresses of the orphanages that were around in ~1918-1932. Long ago I remember seeing a picture of "Aunt Birdie" WASHBURN, who was either Etta's sister or aunt. Aunt Birdie had been afficted with polio or a similar affliction which resulted in her being only about three to four feet tall. Apparently she was always tucked away in the Washburn homestead to "hide" her from guests and others. My father said that this Washburn homestead is/was one of the original land grants from the U.S. government many years ago. My father mentioned that there is a detailed book about our Washburn family line that traces our heritage back to the Mayflower.

Mary WASHBURN, b. 2/1852 in Ohio, married for 26 yrs. to Jay, father born in Ohio, mother born in Ohio, number of children born to Mary: 5 number of children alive in 1900: 3 Two Children Listed: Howard: b. 08/1874 in Ohio, single in 1900 (at 25 yrs.). ETTA: b. 10/1895 in Ohio, single in 1900 (at 4 yrs.). ......................... The folowing info I am 99% sure of, as this is what my family has told me throughout the years: Etta WASHBURN married Archie (Archibald) Paul BLISS in Ohio. They had two children: Mary BLISS: b. ~1914-15. Bernice May BLISS: b. 5/23/1916, in Ohio. Etta died when Bernice was ~2 years old, in ~1918. My father says Etta was only 21 or 23 years old (note that this matches the age of the Etta in the Census record). After Etta's death, both girls were put in an orphanage. Bernice left the orphanage when she was ~16, moved to Wayne County, met my Grandfather Elmer SAURER, and they had only one child, my father. Her older sister married a "Tub" SCOTT and they had about three children. .................... My father says that Archie was an abandoned child (literally on the "BLISS" family doorstep). Apparently my father was told this by his mother and other WASHBURN relatives. According to the same 1900 Census as above, there is a listing for: Archie BLISS (b. 6/1890) who is listed as a son residing with: James BLISS (b. 7/1848 in Ohio) Margaret Ann (BLISS) (b. 9/1861 in Ohio) Margaret had seven children James' father was born in Massechusetts Margaret's mother's name was Rebecca MOHLER (b. 9/1832 in Pennsylvania) Rebecca had four children Archie was a conductor with B&O Railroad (on "steamers") and Alvin "Shorty" WASHBURN was an engineer there too ("Shorty" was one of Etta's nephews, i.e., my Grandma Bernice's cousin). After Etta died, Archie apparently remarried two or three more times. Who he married and just how many children he had is unknown to us. The last known address for him (at his time of death ~1976-7) was still in Huron County. Other than the 1900 Census for Greenwich Twp., we have no other clue as to where in Huron County this homestead is/was. Anyone know any sources where I could look up an original U.S. land grant to the WASHBURNS? One of Bernice's aunts (WASHBURN bloodline) was stricken with "polio", and thus, was only four feet tall.

I am researching the Huron Co. families of SEARL(S), LOCKWOOD, ROGERS, STORRS, HARRIS, and KING. For each of these families I have outlined what I have and what I am looking for below. SEARL(S) - John SEARL was born either in MA or CT about 1781 (parents?). He married (1st) Eunice ___ who died 12 Sep 1845 in Huron Co., and (2nd) Sarah HOSMER 4 Feb 1846 in Huron Co. He died 15 May 1864 in Huron Co. John and Eunice had the following children: Rowland, Joanna, William M.,Sybil, Elizeir, and Esther M. SEARL (though it is not clear if the last child was their daughter or granddaughter, as she was born abt 1838,about 20 years after their second-to-last child).Rowland SEARL was born 27 Nov 1807 in MA or CT. He married Mary Anne Rogers 1 Jan 1835 in Hartland, Huron Co., and died 31 May 1890 in Hartland. Mary Anne was born abt 1815 in NY and died 3 Apr 1889 in Hartland. They had the following children: George Timothy, Elizabeth,John, Joel, Stephen, Luther, and Augusta SEARL. George Timothy SEARL was born 1 Dec 1854 in Hartland and died 14 Dec 1930 in Norwalk. He married Harriet "Hattie" M. LOCKWOOD 1 Dec 1878 in HuronCo. She was born 5 Jun 1856 in Hartland and died 20 Nov 1913 in New London. LOCKWOOD - Samuel J. LOCKWOOD was born abt 1814-1816 in NY (parents?) and died 27 Feb 1890 in Hartland. He married Polly STORRS 21 Nov 1841 in Hartland. She was born abt 1819-1820 in OH and died 17 Jan 1898 in Hartland. They had the following children: Harriet "Hattie" M., William, Anna M.,Charles, Royal S., Friend, Elvira, and George W. LOCKWOOD. I am a descendant of Hattie M. LOCKWOOD. ROGERS - Mary Anne ROGERS was born abt 1815 in NY (parents?). She was adopted into the family of Joel ROGERS and Elizabeth EELLS of Ontario Co., NY,and Huron Co., OH. She died 3 Apr 1889 in Hartland. She married Rowland SEARL 1 Jan 1835 in Hartland; he was born 27 Nov 1807 in CT or MA and died 31 May 1890 in Hartland. HARRIS - Nathan HARRIS was born 22 Aug 1771, prob. in Windham Co., CT (son of Nathan HARRIS and Prudence ____), and died 20 Feb 1856 in Crownpoint,Lake, IN. If anyone has information (especially documented) about when and where she was born and died, I would really appreciate hearing from you. KING - I am not a descendant of this family, but I am looking for what happened to this couple after about 1840, when I lose track of them. Anna (HARRIS) STORRS married John KING 17 Nov 1833 in Hartland. They are in Hartland in the 1840 census, and in 1841 John KING swore as to the legality of the marriage of his stepchild, Polly STORRS. After this, however, I do not know what happened to them, or whether Anna and John KING had any children together. Any information concerning this would begreatly appreciated.
