Ionia County Genealogical Research Guide

PERSI
No genealogical research would be complete without checking the PERSI INDEX.
What is PERSI and how can it help me in my genealogical search?

PERSI is a comprehensive subject index, produced by the Allen County Public Library in Indiana, to genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and also French-Canadian since 1800. The collection also includes literature dating from the 1700s although the collection before 1800 is less complete. PERSI represents some 27 volumes in print.

PERSI is a work in progress which last year grew by more than 80,000 citations, bringing the total number of citations to more than one million. The index catalogs between 3,000 and 4,000 total titles, listing every article according to locality, family (surname), and/or research methodology. PERSI does not index every name in every article, nor does it include the full text of actual articles. However, once published electronically, you will be able to search every word of what is indexed in PERSI to locate relevant information.

When you find an appropriate citation in PERSI, you will be able to see who published the periodical. If the publisher no longer exists, your local library or historical society may be able to help you find out about availability of the periodical. You may also contact the Allen County Public Library, which owns a copy of each periodical indexed in PERSI, for photocopies of articles. When contacting the Allen Public Library to obtain copies of articles listed in the PERSI Index, you must send to them a description of the article to be copied, providing the full entry from the PERSI index and the name of the journal. You may only request 6 articles at one time. The charge is $7.50 for each letter (with 6 articles) that your send. You must include payment of the $7.50 along with your letter of request. Requests are not accepted by phone, fax or e-mail. You must allow 6 weeks for processing of your request. Although they do not accept requests by e-mail, you may e-mail them requesting that they send you a form for ordering copies of articles. Be sure to include your mailing address when requesting the form.

The PERSI Index is available at most large libraries. They have also published the index on CD for use on your home computer. The PERSI Index is also available on the internet at Ancestry
