THOMAS JEFFERSON BUSBY BIOGRAPHY

The following is copy of a biographical memoranda prepared by THOMAS JEFFERSON BUSBY November 22, 1931.

Full Name: Thomas Jefferson Busby
Place & Date of Birth: July 26, 1884 near Short P.O. in the county of Tishomingo, Mississippi.

Subject Father: Reubin Winston Busby. He was the son of ROBERT BUSBY and SARAH (TURNER) BUSBY, who lived near old East-Port in Tishomingo County, Mississippi.

Subject Mother: Laura Ann Bartlett, the daughter of Thomas Bartlett and Mary (Galloway) Bartlett who lived at Charleston, Mississippi County, Missouri.

Remarks on Ancestry:

My ancestors were from the part of England about London. They were located in southern Virginia, in North Carolina, and later in South Carolina.

NEEDHAM BUSBY, my great-great-great-grandfather was born in Johnson County, N.C. in 1754 but moved when a young man to the Old Orangeburg District, Fairfield County, S.C. when a young man. He lived there when the first census was taken (1790), his name being given as "Kneadom". He later moved to Lexington District, S.C. where a pension as a soldier was granted him on the 4th of September, 1837, No. 59114 (S.C.), at 84 years of age.

MICAJAH BUSBY SR.,my great-great-grandfather, son of Needham Busby, was born in Orangeburg District, Fairfiled Co., S.C. He lived there until after the War of 1812 (census of 1800 shows him as "Micajah Busbie", and 1810 as Micajah Busby) when he migrated with his sons and their families (8 males and 6 females in all) to Dickson County (northwest of Nashville) Tennessee. Micajah Busby, Sr., with his family of 3 females and one young son had moved to Henderson County, Tennessee by 1830, as shown in the 1830 census. Along with him went his grown sons and their families, MILES BUSBY, three sons and wife; SION BUSBY, three sons, wife and two daughters; MICAJAH BUSBY JR., wife and one daughter. They were located in Henderson County at a thriving center known as Jacks Creek, which lies 9 miles east of the town of Henderson and is now in Chester County, Tennessee.

SION BUSBY was my great-grandfather. He was born in Fairfield County, S.C. in 1801 and removed to Tennessee with his father as stated. He married JANE NOLEN in 18.. in South Carolina. Moved to Dickson County, Tenn. by 1820, Henderson County, Tenn. by 1830, Hardin County,Tenn by 1840 and Tishomingo County, Miss by 1850. Sion Busby by his first marriage had two daughters Alderene and Deddemona, twins, and Robert Busby and William Busby.

By a second marriage he had two sons, F.G.Busby, George E. Busby, daughter Lucretia Busby, all of whom live in Chester County, Tennessee.

Robert Busby, my grandfather was born in Dickson County, Tennessee, son of Sion Busby and Jane Nolen Busby, 1819 and moved to Tishomingo County, near old east Port on the Tennessee River. In 1843 he married SARAH A. TURNER who was born in Alabama in 1825. To them were born the following children: Mary Ann - 1844; Martha Jane - 1845; Sarah Ann - 1847; James Newbern Busby - 1849; John Wesley - 1851; Nancy Caroline - 1853; Reubin Winston Price Busby - 1855, July 13; Joseph Felix Busby - 1857; Frances Alice - 1859; Robert Jefferson Davis Busby, born Sept 5, 1861, died Feb. 11---.

Reubin Winston P. Busby, son of Robert Busby, was my father. He married Laura Ann Bartlett of Mississippi County, Missouri. She was an only child of Thomas Bartlett and was born July 17, 1863. Her mother was a Galloway of Missouri. The children of Reubin Winston P. Busby were Sarah Elizabeth - 1878; Winnie B. - 1881; Thomas Jefferson Busby, born July 26, 1884 and named for his father's brother, Jefferson Davis Busby, deceased and mother's father Thomas Bartlett; Ivy Pearle - 1887; Benjamin F. - 1890, who died at seven weeks old; Edward Lee - 1893; Reubin Winston, known as "Ben" - 1897 and Maggie May - 1901.

Thomas Jefferson Busby (subject of this sketch) married Joanna Martin June 4, 1912 at New Albany, Miss. She was the daughter of Charles Rudolph Martin and Virginia (Smith) Martin. To Thomas Jefferson Busby and Joanna M. Busby was born three sons: Thomas Jefferson Busby, Jr. 7-4-1913; Charles Winston Busby - 7-21-1915; Julian Martin Busby - 11-8-1923. Each of them born in Houston, Chickasaw County, Mississippi.

BUSBY, Thomas Jefferson, a Representative from Mississippi; born near Short,Tishomingo County, Miss., July 26, 1884; attended the common schools of his native city, Oakland College, [p.926] Yale, Miss., and Iuka Normal Collegeat Iuka, Miss., taught in the public schools of Tishomingo, Alcorn, and Chickasaw Counties, Miss., 1903-1908; was graduated from the George Robertson Christian College, Henderson, Tenn., in 1905 and from the law department of the University of Mississippi at Oxford in 1909; was admitted to the bar in 1909 and commenced practice of law at Houston, Miss.; prosecuting attorney of Chickasaw County 1912-1920; resumed the practice of his profession in Houston, Miss.; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1923-January 3, 1935); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1934; engaged in the practice of law in Washington, D.C., where he now resides.
