Matthew Caudill, b 1760 in Virginia, d in Letcher Co., Kentucky, m Sarah
Webb, b Nov. 8, 1778 in N.C. He migrated from Va. to Wilkes Co.,
N.C. Later he and Sarah moved to S.C. where their first son, Stephen,
was born Feb. 7, 1794. Matthew was my great great grandfather.
He was a son of Rev. James Caudill Sr. James was [living person’s]
great great great great grandfather.
Matthew and his brother, James Jr., a Revolutionary
War veteran, came to Letcher Co., Ky. between 1805 and 1810. Matthew’s
descendants migrated North into Rowan, Magoffin, Pike, Floyd and Johnson
Counties. Abel Caudill of Rowan County, grandson of Matthew, helped
establish the People’s Bank of Morehead, Ky. In 1906. Abel had six
sons: David, Cornelius, Samuel, Joseph, Daniel, and George.
There were all bankers, lawyers, doctors, and business men. Our family
lineage is from Stephen of 1680 who came from Scotland, to James Sr, 1720,
to Mathew of 1760, to Stephen of 1794, to John of 1815, to Winston b 1847,
to all of you who are descendants of Winston and Martha Ann (Chandler)
Caudill, and Winston and Sarah Elizabeth (May) (Caine) Caudill.
When Matthew and family moved to Ky. They settled
on Millstone Creek near Beaver Creek. They raised four children.
[Researchers have since found there were an additional eight children,
which I have listed at the bottom of this page.]

1. Stephen Caudill, b Feb. 7, 1794 in South Carolina, m Sarah
Younts (Yonts), b Mar. 18, 1796, daughter of William Younts of Letcher
Co., Ky. Stephen was my great grandfather. [text about living person
removed] Stephen and Sarah had 6 children. For more information,
see Chapter 4.
[The correct spelling of Sarah's last name is Yonts, an americanization
of the Dutch surname JANS.]
2. Sarah Caudill, b 1795, in S.C., m William "Bucky" Tackett
from Knox Co. A large part of their descendants is now scattered
along the Big Sandy and Licking Rivers.
3. Abner Caudill, b 1797, m Elenor ? in S.C. The following
court records show some of Abner’s dealings in real-estate:
Floyd County. Ky. Order Book No. 2 Page 271 1871
Abner Caudill appointed surveyor of road from head of Beaver to the Gap
of Millstone.
Perry Co., Ky. Deed Book A - Page 253 - Mar. 13, 1825. Patrick
Johnson to Abner Caudill 125 acres for $300, located on Rockhouse Fork
of the Kentucky River.
Perry Co., Ky Deed Book A - Page 261 - Nov. 22, 1827 Robert S. Brashears
to Abner Caudill, 50 acres for $20, on the Indian Branch of the Rockhouse
Fork of the North Fork of the Kentucky River.
Perry Co., Ky Deed Book A - Page 426 - July 24, 1830 James Hall to
Abner Caudill 50 acres for $100, on the Rockhouse Fork of the North Fork
of the Kentucky River.
Perry Co., Ky. Deed Book B - Page 44 May 3, 1834 Abner Caudill
to William Hall 75 acres for $300, a part of two surveys in the name
of Patrick Johnson, on the Rockhouse Fork of the Ky. River.
Perry Co., Ky Deed Book B - Page 180 - Aug. 29, 1838 Abner Caudill
and Elenor Caudill, his wife, of Floyd Co., Ky. to John Hargis of Pike
Co., Ky. 125 acres for $300 on the Rockhouse Fork of Ky. River.
4. Jenny Caudill, b 1799, in Wilkes Co., N.C. Jenny
was the 4th and last child of my great, great, grandparents, Matthew and
Sarah Webb Caudill. We have no more information about Jenny.
