Catlett Toliver Shaw
Martha Jane Wooley
Catlett Taliaferro Shaw simplified
the spelling to Toliver, and went by his initials, C.T. He was
born 27 October 1826, in Bracken County, Kentucky, a son of Joseph
and Rebecca (Owen) Shaw. He served in the Civil War as a private,
Company G, 123rd regiment, Indiana Volunteers from 1864 until
the war's conclusion.
Martha Jane Wooley was born
in 1830, Ripley County, Indiana, a daughter of William and Nancy
(Radican/Rattekin) Wooley. My grandmother, Rissa Henderson, remembered
that Martha not only spun the wool, as pictured here, but also
had a large loom where she wove it into cloth, from which she
made nearly all the family's clothing.
The house they stand beside
served three or more generations of the family before passing
into other hands. It was located about a mile west of Versailles,
Indiana. It burned in about 1976.
