Obituary of Louis Henry Hildebrandt

Mr. Louis Henry Hildebrandt passed away in the Didsbury Hospital on June 21, 1982. He had been ill for several weeks, and was 68 years old.

Louis was a lifetime Albertan. He was born September 9, 1913, west of Carstairs at the home of his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Cohrs. His parents, Fritz Heinrich and Susanna Marie Hildebrandt, farmed at Rumsey, Alberta, and Louis’ early years were spent there. He attended Greenridge School.

In 1938 he moved to Didsbury, and in 1936 he purchased land at Garfield, west of Carstairs. He married Martha Kristine Nielsen of Port Alberni, BC, in 1946. Martha died in 1971; Louis retired to Didsbury in 1973, and married Myra Belle Parrish Wyatt of Columbus, Georgia, in 1979.

Louis lived most of his adult life in this area. He sincerely cared about people, and his friends were from every age group. He was perfectly at home visiting with anyone: little children loved him, older people did, too. Everyone trusted him, and could count on him for help in any situation. He enjoyed travelling, playing cards, and bowling. He loved photography, telling stories, practical jokes, and visiting with friends. Louis had many interests, and was always well informed on current affairs. He was a voting member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and treasured the plaque given him for faithful service. Louis was an elder in the Westcott Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School. He supported all church programs, and rarely missed services. He was on the Board of Directors and rental officer at Didsbury 5-0 Club.

Louis was a devoted family man, and a good farmer. He liked to see things grow, and he knew the best and most practical means of making them do so. He enjoyed gardening, and he loved lady slippers. There must be fifty families who prize the clump of lady slippers Louis gave them. Dozens of us will never again see this beautiful native orchid without remembering our dear, dear Louis.

He is survived by his wife Myra Belle, daughter Carol Ann Fuller of Salmon Arm BC, son Bruce of Fonthill, Ontario, son John of Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, John of St. Louis, Missouri, and Henry of Didsbury, and five sisters: Hilda Berg, of Arlington Heights, Illinois; Frieda Gridley, of Calgary; Mary Hingst, of Ponoka; Ruth Budeau, of Chilliwack, BC; Ella Southoff of Kaslo, BC, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout Alberta, British Columbia, and the United States.

He was predeceased by his mother in 1936, his sister Olga in 1954, his father in 1958, his brother Nicholas in 1967, and his wife Martha in 1971.

Funeral services were held from the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Didsbury, Alberta, on June 23, 1982, with Reverend Larry Lentz officiating. Organist was Mrs. Norma Anning. Internment at Westcott Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Bruce Hildebrandt, John Hildebrandt, Halley Gridley, Mark Olson, John Olson, and Warren Good.
