Probstberg Wine

From the Winter 2000 BGN

10/17/99 (Bill Brobst)

I received an inquiry about the Probstberg wine referred to in my book The Brobst Chronicles. I thought there might be some general interest in this. It's one of my favorite wines. It's described on page 64 of The Brobst Chronicles. It comes from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer area, called "Longuicher Probstberg Kabinett", imported by H. Schmitt Sohne GmbH, and bottled by Hellenen Kellerei GmbH in Longuich, Mosel-Germany. It is similar to a Riesling, about mid-way between a semi-sweet wine and a dry wine. I get it by the case from the Navy liquor store in Norfolk, Virginia, but it's available through any liquor store. The large ones may carry it routinely. Green bottle. And a very pleasant wine, not expensive. I've been trying to track down the name. The area where it is bottled is about 50-60 miles west-northwest of Kandel, Germany, where our ancestors lived before emigrating to America in the early 1700s. The name "Probstberg" refers to a hill named after a Probst family. Was it our family? It is likely, but not yet proven. Was one of our ancestors, or a descendant of one of our ancestors, the keeper of a Probst vineyard there? Don't know. I've written to both Schmitt Sohne and Hellenen Kellerei, asking into the history of the name, but have received no answer. My next trip to Germany will include a trip to the Hellenen Kellerei to find out first hand. Stop by my home on the Outer Banks and I'll give you a bottle!
