This Van Arsdale Page was created on Saturday, January 15, 2000.
The content is a series of letters (196 pages, there
is a search engine) written by
Mark Alan Thomas about his Van Arsdalen research. The letters contain his
research data and detail the
lives of several Van Arsdale (many spellings exist)
families.
The data contained may be copied and shared by individuals who are involved
in
their own genealogical research. It should be credited to Mark Alan
Thomas, and
his original sources should be cited.

I have been meaning to submit several biographies and one Revolutionary
War
pension file record for some time now. Please post these to Van Arsdale
biographies.
The Family of Abraham Van Aersdalen - in 6 parts.
The Family of Cornelius O. Vanarsdall - introduction in part 1, and
2 parts.
The Family of Cornelius C. Vanarsdall - in one part.
In addition, I had also intended to do one final edit on the complete
Revolutionary War Pension File of Cornelius Van Arsdalen, a.k.a.: Cornelius
Van
Arsdall. His middle initial "A" does not appear in these records, but
is found in
his affidavit to the pension file for his son-in-law Cornelius O. Vanarsdall.
The
identities of these two men are often times confused, as are members
of these two
soldiers families.
In addition, the two sons of Lt. Cornelius A. Van Arsdalen, who also
signed his
name Van Arsdall, Cornelius C. Vanarsdall and Alexander Vanarsdall
are also
erroneously reported to have been revolutionary war soldiers. They
were named as
executors of the soldiers will and his estate. However, they were both
born during
the war, and were far too young to have ever served The government,
past
researchers, and even careless present researchers continue to make
the same old
mistakes, and perpetuate the myth and the confusion. I do sympathize
somewhat with
other researchers of Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky. There were
a large
number of the family who settled in this region, and most by necessity,
rather
than by choice. Even so, great care must be used when approaching the
Vanarsdall
crowd in Mercer Co., KY.
Several erroneous reports have made their way onto different venues
on Roots Web
concerning the family of Abraham Van Aersdalen, and his son Cornelius
A. Van
Arsdalen, a.k.a.: Cornelius A. Vanarsdall, and his relatives who moved
to Mercer
Co., KY from Somerset County, New Jersey. Try as I may, I have not
been able to
get anyone to remove these erroneous reports from their venues. According
to
today' standards of research, this should not still be happening, but
it does. To
our current or future researchers out there, let the buyer beware.
There is no
substitute for original research and complete reporting of all sources
in our
work. Unfortunately, most computer genealogy programs make this difficult,
and the
busy work of recording sources is never ending. The proof of our case
comes from
thorough reporting and documenting every piece of information we find,
and of
course, I have made, and continue to make my own share of these common
mistakes.
I prefer to let these reports and records speak
for themselves. Do
not accept my work on face value, check out the
sources for yourself.
