Documented Dates of Residence

Documented Dates of Residence

For the purpose of documentation in this directory, the following methods of annotating sources will be used, unless otherwise individually listed or the source was not noted in my files:

1.      PRONI: records from the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland

2.      IGVI: the index to Griffith’s Valuation of Ireland, 1848 – 1864, found on Broderbund CD # 188

Early on in my research I did not have a clear picture of what ‘townlands’ encompassed, and David McElroy kindly explained:  “Townlands are the smallest unit, something like your township only a lot smaller ~ say maybe 50 – 1500 acres where your townships are about 6000 acres.  A collection of townlands are [sic] grouped to make up a parish that might be nearer to size of your township.  A group of parishes make up a Barony – which belongs to [the] old clan system – more like a feudal system of people being given a barony for services rendered – about 8 or 10 baronies make up one of our counties.  It’s a hard thing to explain to Americans because an average townland here, say 360 acres, would support 5 – 10 families (McElroy to author, 11 May 1980).  Further, as Mr. McElroy explained:  “Townlands were often given as part of a wedding dowry (McElroy to author, 11 May 1980), and usually a family did stay in one particular townland, the family gradually [becoming] closely identified with that townland (McElroy to author, 14 July 1982).

Family tradition had been that our Breakey family came from the townland of Lismagonway in County Monaghan.   Although we had no information beyond my great grandfather, the townland name always fascinated me and its recall stood me in good stead when I began the search for my ancestors.  Based upon my good fortune in searching my lineage, as well as Mr. McElroy’s comments, I have chosen to alphabetize this section of the directory by townland.

In conclusion, a word of explanation:  in the ‘annotations’ column the reader may note an entry that states ~ Dated 1860. Not in Tithe Book.  At other times the entry may read ~ Dated 1858; also in Tithes 1829.  As Mr. McElroy explained (McElroy to author, 14 July 1982): “If a family is not in the Evaluation book or in Tithes, then usually they have left the county; if in Tithes and not Evaluation, it usually means they left the Parish; if only in Evaluation book, it means they did not use the land for produce as tithes was passed on produce, or they did not live in the area in 1830; if in both Evaluation and Tithes books, it means they paid tithe to the church in 1820 – 1830 and still resided in the Parish in 1850 –1860.”
