Documented Dates of Marriages & Deaths
For the purpose of documentation in this directory, the following methods of annotating sources, unless otherwise individually noted, will be used:
1. IGI/BI: International Genealogical Index/British Isles
2. IGI/NA: International Genealogical Index/North America
3. LDS: Vital Records contained on CDs published by the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).
4. PRONI: Public Records Office of Northern Ireland
5. Residence given will, to the best ability of the author with available documented sources, be listed under the columns headed townland or parish or annotations.
Much of the present family history on record relates to Breakey families long affiliated with the Presbyterian Church; however, research also suggests that quite possibly another early branch of the Breakey family was affiliated with the Church of Ireland.
In 1984 Loyd “Jack” Breakey visited Ireland with the hope of furthering the lineage of his Breakey family. As noted in Early Records of Scotshouse, Currin Parish, County Monaghan [see The Breakey Collection], it was merely happenstance that Jack found the Church of Ireland connection. Although his research has been covered fully in the above-mentioned article, I have again included it in this section on marriages and deaths in order to facilitate my research and enhance cross-referencing for myself as well as for others.
A word of explanation: in the ‘annotations’ column the reader may note an entry that states ‘Diocese of Clogher (M. L. B.)’ As Mr. McElroy explained (McElroy to author 18 March 1981), “Regarding Diocesan Marriage License Bonds…they relate only to Anglican marriages and therefore the marriages took place in the Church of Ireland.” [As an aside, McElroy had previously explained that the Church of Ireland registers for the Parish of Aghabog were burned in Dublin, 1922 (McElroy to author 13 October 1980).]
By way of further clarification the reader may wish to see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donaghmore1/registers.html from which the following has been taken:
“When marriage registers are lacking for a parish, it may be worth making a search in the index to marriage licence bonds for the appropriate dioceses. If one or both of the partners to be married were not known personally to a minister, a bond had to be issued by the diocesan authorities declaring that there was no impediment to the marriage. The indexes to these bonds survived destruction in 1922 and these indexes give dates of birth and the maiden names of wives. Copies are available in PRONI (MIC6B).
Couples usually married in the bride’s parish. Permission to marry was obtained by either banns or by license. Banns meant that the minister announced their intention to marry, on three consecutive Sundays to allow objections to the marriage to be made or impediments to be investigated. This could be bypassed by obtaining a special license. This meant an application to the proper church authority, the bishop of the diocese. Most of these Irish allegations, bonds and licenses have been destroyed. Some abstracts and indexes for various dioceses survive.”
In conclusion, two dioceses will be noted in the ‘annotations’ column. See the above mentioned website URL for the table ‘Counties of Ireland and Their Diocesan Jurisdiction.’
Editor’s note: I wish to thank Mr. Norm Ruddock, host of the above web page, for patiently answering numerous questions, and reminding me that over the years parish, and especially diocese, boundaries have changed many times up to the mid-to late 1800s. Lacking the time and documentation needed to further make a connection between the following diocesan entries and individuals, I would direct the reader to the following web site links as the family of Breakey has long been associated with the areas mentioned:
